CVOThe Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) was established after the 1980 eruption to observe any potential movement in the region. Mount St Helens is one of five active volcanoes in Washington and the information that the CVO gathers, helps to present an early warning system.

The American Authorities have also issued information on what the neighborhood population can do in the case of an ash fall. Residents should have face masks and eye protection, battery powered radios and torches and an adequate amount of food and water for three days. When there are signs of volcanic activity, the area around Mount St Helens is closed to visitors and the roads through the National Park are shut to traffic.

-They straight away documented that our local government

resources were completely insufficient to address the clean-up necessities facing the City. They

contacted the City of Seattle, King Country government in Seattle, the

City of Portland, and Multnomah County government in Oregon to

demand the special equipment and manpower needed for ash removal

from the area.

- The plan for elimination of the ash incorporated the Central Business District, hospitals, fire stations, the Airport, streets/alleys, school areas, roof tops, hills, parking lots, and other residential locations. Eventually, the entire city was cleaned on a block-by-block basis, through the cooperation and coordination of neighborhoods, residents and volunteers working with City crews and equipment.

The City learned by trial and error the best way to pick up and dispose of the ash on our community.

-The ash on the streets and in the alleys was wet by water and flush trucks. Residents were advised to also wet the ash down to prevent it from becoming air borne. Sawdust was also utilized to stabilize the ash from blowing winds. -Neighborhoods were then asked to shovel, sweep and stockpile ash in the City street at designated areas, 2 meters away from storm and sewer drains. -Graders and loaders would follow, pushing and lifting the ash piles into large 12-yard dump trucks, which were then dispatched to 25 different landfill sites where the ash was deposited and covered with topsoil. -The procedure was then followed by street sweepers which would clean the streets again, several times, to pick up the remaining ash deposits. -Roof cleaning ranked equally to street cleaning in the overall as clean-up effort. The roofs had to be cleaned before ash was picked up from the streets and alleys. A combination of methods were used for the roofs: -Large, truck-mounted vacuum units were employed for major flat-top buildings which could extract ash from the roofs into a tank which contained it from further release into the air. -Ash was swept off the roof of each building into the alleys and streets and washed down prior to the clean-up crews coming into that area.

INTERESTING

-The May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helen's had done 500 times the damage of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.-After the big eruption, the north slope of Mount Saint Helen's looked like the surface of the moon.-It is famous for it erupted because you could see it from Iowa. FACTS
