I pulled my February StreetScene (NSRA magazine) out of the mailbox and took a little time out to read a few of the articles. Tom Vogele’s curbside article (Feb 2014, page 8) is the reality of hot rodding, but the

Emergence of the Green Worm part two Where’s the Challenge? By Allen Haines (Feb 2014, page 18) hits closer to home for me.

Two articles taking on the concerns about where are the young people in “our?” hobby. All the issues were covered, money, availability, lack of imagination or know-how, etc.

Some of us are involved with the “younger crowd” and “their” hobby….yep cars/trucks old & new, high tech, really fast, blaring radios shouting out words we can’t understand, and I gotta’ tell you hot rodding is still very much alive.

You only have to attended Scrapin’ the Coast - June 20-22, 2014, to see just how far “our hobby” has come. The excuses for not attending like: don’t like their music, they aren't hot rodders, their to wild, just doesn't apply anymore...

Here are some wise words from Allen Haines…”You see, I’ve come to respect The Worm. With all of its quandaries and conundrums, it’s helped me realize: We can’t go back. In rodding, and so much more, progress and evolution walk hand in hand. We can’t stop progress, and we can’t escape evolution. We have to go with them and join in, to be part of the fun. I’ve yet to visit any event overflowing with too many vehicles. There’s room for everyone, and each entry brings with it an opportunity for us to learn more, to add to our enjoyment”

Just think about it… most of who are reading this live near the Mississippi Gulf Coast where custom and classic street rods are treated to more events than most other areas of the country.

We have a huge impact on tourism for our local towns. Our city officials and charity groups usually engage our groups into their events and we reap the benefits of recognition as we participate together.

Jimbo, The city of New Roads is inviting all car clubs and classic car, truck and

motorcycle owners to beautiful False River for our annual Spring Street Festival and Classic Car Show for a day of music, food and arts and crafts vendors and to see hundreds of classic cars from all over. The event is on March 15, 2014 from 9am-3pm. This show doubles in cars every year. Don't miss the fun in Downtown New Roads!

The last column to go into the magazine usually is mine. So as I try to

summarize all the emails, phone calls, and things that have happened since the last issue, I’ll start off with this….

When asked by a young patrol officer, "Do you know you were speeding?" The 83-year-old driver gave the young officer an ear to ear smile and

stated, "Yes, but... I had to get there before I forgot where I was going."

The officer put his ticket book away and bid the driver a good day. Well I'm sure that this is a story to bring a smile... but the truth is, this

may be us someday, or maybe we're already there… Most of us use any number of reasons as to why we can’t remember

things that just happened. Short term memory loss is the norm for a lot of us. Strange how we can remember the details of things that happened years ago but not where we set something down just a few moments ago.

Even the names of people we meet seem to slip away as they walk off. We seem to remember what car/truck/bike goes with a person but what was their name? (maybe the owners could put the registration card from the last show they attended back on the windshield so we can match the name with the vehicle.) Me, I usually have a name tag of some sort on. Shops, stores and service people wear name tags and I for one think that’s a great idea. Most everyone likes it when they are greeted by name, ..How about you?

Right before Valentines day I made a trip to the post office. I noticed a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them.

My curiosity getting the better of me, I went up to the man and asked him what he is doing. The man says, "I'm sending out one thousand Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'"

"But why?" I asked. "I'm a divorce lawyer," the man replied. Jimbo, Well, it's tax time again, boys and girls. So cough it up if you haven't already! But no one says you have to go gentle into that dark night.

With all the news about the IRS I thought you might like a few ideas on how to annoy them, (Without Getting In Trouble!) Here are some hints on how to annoy the IRS if you owe them money...

1. Always put staples in the right hand corner. Go ahead and put them down the whole right side. The extractors who remove the mail from the envelopes have to take out any staples on the right side.

2. Never arrange paperwork in the right order, or even facing the right way. Put a few upside down and backwards. That way they have to remove all your staples, rearrange your paperwork and re-staple it (on the left side).

3. Line the bottom of your envelope with Elmer's glue and let it dry before you put in you forms, so that the automated opener doesn't open it and the extractor has to open it by hand.

4. If you're very unfortunate and have to pay taxes, use a two or three party check. On top of paying with a third party check, pay one of the dollars you owe in cash. When an extractor receives cash, no matter

how small an amount, s/he has to take it to a special desk and fill out of few nasty forms.

5. Write a little letter of appreciation. Any letter received has to be read and stamped regardless of what it is or what it's on. 6. Write your letter on something misshapen and unconventional. Like

on the back of a Kroger sack. 7. When you mail it, mail it in a big envelope (even if its just a single

EZ form). Big envelopes have to be torn and sorted differently than regular business size ones. An added bonus to the big envelope is that they take priority over other mail, so the workers can hurry up and deal with your mess.

8. If you send two checks, they'll have to staple your unsightly envelope to your half destroyed form.

9. Always put extra paper clips on your forms. Any foreign fasteners or the like have to be removed and put away.

10. Sign your name in ink on every page. Any signature has to be verified and then date stamped.

These are just a few of the fun and exciting things you can do with the IRS. These methods are *only* recommended when you owe money.

Pat@ Jimbo, I was traveling through south Georgia I noticed a lot of signs saying

"pecans ahead." Wouldn't "restrooms ahead" be more appropriate? Jay@

Jimbo, A nice, calm and respectable Cajun lady. Marie, A nice, calm and

respectable Cajun lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist whose name is Boudreaux, looked straight into his eyes, and said, "I would like ta buy some cyanide."

Then Boudreaux asked, "Mais, Why in de world do ya need cyanide?" Marie replied, "Ah need it to poison my husband." Boudreaux eyes got big and he explained, "Lord have mercy! A...h

can't give you cyanide to kill you husband, dat's against de law! I'll lose my license! They'll throw boat of us in jail! All kinds of bad tings will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!"

Marie reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband Thibodeaux in bed with the pharmacist's wife.

Boudreaux looked at the picture and replied, "You didn't told me you had a prescription."

Are you not happy? Surely you have plenty to be thankful for. Day after day I hear complaints of people wanting more out of life. We are constantly being bombarded with negative news and negative attitudes from friends and associates. Maybe it's because we

become immune to the good things in our life. I can come home and my wife is preparing a wonderful meal on the

stove and in the oven. The aroma fills the air and brightens my eyes. "Man, that smells good!" My attitude has been vitalized and the goodness I feel is immense.

What happens in the next hour is exactly what happens in many people's lives. That wonderful aroma fades away. So we think.

The smell does not dissipate. We become use to it or immune to the very thing that gave us the joy in the first place.

I noticed something the other day. When I re-entered the house after taking out the trash, my senses were once again invigorated with the fragrance of that home cooked meal. We lose sight of what we have and complain about what we don't have. Often we must be reminded of the goodness that God has already provided us with. We may just need to step outside for a minute, come back in, an appreciate our blessings.

Be thankful and grateful for those good relationships, the health, the job, the kids, the parents, the finances, the positive associations and the grace of God. We often don't realize what we had until it's gone.

When we start an attitude of gratitude, then and only then are we provided with an abundant life. God will not put more into your life until you take care of and show appreciation for that which he has already given.

It's okay to ask for more and to seek better results in your life, but take a good whiff of what's already cooking in your kitchen. Life is grand!

The Double D Diner They open at 7am for breakfast Monday - Saturday and start serving lunch at 10am. The

breakfast is like many places we have ate at, except they also serve 3 types of bagels with cream cheese. They play the old 50's and 60's music. The music is just right, it's not so loud that you can't talk while eating. There is nothing like going to the diner for breakfast and not being quite awake and listening to the music. Then songs like Wooly Bully comes on and you start to get in the groove and ready to start the day.

Lunch- Dinner starts at 10am and runs until 6pm, but they won't run you out if you get there at 5 minutes till 6 and still want something to eat.

The lunch menu has sandwiches with fries or chips, small and large po-boys, daily lunch plates and several items for dinner that are served with 2 sides. Where can you go get a seafood platter for $15.00 with fish, oysters, shrimp, fries and hushpuppys. The last seafood platter I saw on a menu was more than that with the same items.

For those who like salads there are 6 different ones, including shrimp and oyster.

There is a kid's menu that has the things that they like, such as burgers, grill cheese (I must be a kid because I like grill cheese also) spaghetti and tenders.

Dawn said they try to serve the best they can get, in the way of meats and produce. They want to serve things that they would serve to their family and not just put something on a plate.

This is a family diner for all ages. So go by and say “hi” to Dawn and Shaun. We will be going back soon. For carry outs call 228-206-5694

If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner.

The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place.

If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up!

That's the answer, the escape route and the solution to any problem... just look up! Sorrow looks back, Worry looks around, But faith looks up! Live

simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, and trust in our Creator, who loves us.

S ome are in wheel

chairs, most are dead, none of my

articles have they read, but my thoughts always return to them.

Jimmy Bryan out of Phoenix, AZ was a racing friend, and one of the greatest of all time. (I have to say, there are probably 100 (or more) that can be the “greatest” of all time, if you start back to the start of the “Indy 500” in 1910.

Anyway, his mechanic, car & engine man was Clint Brawner, who also lived in Phoenix. So one day, 1954, I was in Phoenix with the midget, to run South Mt. Speedway on Saturday nite, Harold Miller (my engine builder after Clay Smith died) and I, went out to Brawners place, due to an invite from Brawner when he & Bryan walked in on us at Wilcap in L.A. when we were dynoing my V-8-60.

I was amazed at the shop, tile with a high polish on the floor, you could have eaten off it! I couldn't believe it! It was like a hospital it was so clean and shiny! Clint had the Indy car on extended floor stands about 30” off the floor and was underneath it. Big sign “No Smoking”, (Bryan always drove anytime I ran against him with a unlit cigar in his mouth.)

Brawners big win was the Indy 500 with Mario Andretti in 1969, although Bobby Ball, Ruttman, Vuky, Sachs, and Foyt also drove for him and they all made plenty $$.

Time to get off “open wheel” and back to todays racing. With car bodies etc.

Back in the early 60's Ford decided to go to Le Mans. Now Mitch and all you torsion & bar lovers, take a look at this #24 car built with lots of help from Shelby and many others! It's a spring front and rear! Foyt blew their doors off!

Everybody laughed at it until it took the checker 24 hours later. It was the start of overhead cam engines for Ford. So they tell me.

Let's get off cars and chassis and get to the more important things in life, like girls and women.

I'm taking you back to 1952 or 3. I'm living in South Gate, Calif. running my own midget, I have an apartment with a pool, shop where I kept my midget and driving a 1946 Ford Maroon Rag Top, Winfield cam ¾, Merc crank, 1/8 x 1/8, 2 Strombergs, Evans heads, and a double spring ignition.

So down the road about 12 miles was Long Beach Memorial Stadium. It was cement, held about 15,000 (if they came) for football or foot racing on the ¼ mile track that ran around the football field.

For the record, I won 2 mains there, but the nite when I had won the 1st main, I'm standing in the pits after the race. My habit was to always have a maroon Turkish towel in my stuff (matched the Ford color) and I was wiping my face off with it and trying to get the mud off my neck, when I feel a hand on my elbow of someone behind me! I figured it was Gene Janke my pit man, or Hardy Harline, or Mel Smith, my other pit

men. I swing around smiling, thinking they are happy about the win! No, I'm looking at this Darlin' Child with jet black hair, grey eyes, and

one of those slim slinky figures that have a bust line that makes you thank the man up above for creating these kind. (and thanks Jantzen

Sweaters) . “Hi” I say “did you enjoy the race? “Well” she said, (seeing the gleam

in my eye) “I wasn't sure fans could get in the pits so, you could do me a big favor, my older sister wants to meet you and get your autograph!” “O.K.” say I. “She is up in the stands if you have time, if not will you sign this program “for us”? The “us” got me, cause that counted her “in” with me!

So we walk across the infield and some of the fans are leaving the stands, and some more are coming the other way to the pits, as we walk across. It's a little slippery hard on the front straight so I take her hand (my 1st move) and help her across, and up the stairs of the starters stand.

She pulls me to the left towards the far stairs that go up to the score board. (football etc., State U) I slowed her down and said “Best you tell me your name, at least the first one”. I'm “Joanie” she said and “Jeannie” is my sisters name.

We go up about 3 rows and sitting there, with a blanket on her lap, is the most beautiful blonde I had ever seen in my 24 years of prowling! Beside her is a guy about 50.

Joanie says “Larry this is my sister Jeannie, and my dad Carl”. I figured the blonde must be a model, or movie actress to be that beautiful. I shook hands with Carl the dad, and murmured “very nice to meet you Jeannie”.

She smiled and said “I'm one of your best fans, no one thought you could win, but you showed them!” I then knew this was going to be a great year!

The dad (Carl) got up and reached down under the blanket and came up with a small collapsible chair with 2 small wheels o it. He came towards me, so I stopped out in the aisle. He went down the 3 rows set up chair in the main aisle and then came back up. He stood about 6` and looked to go 180 or 190 lbs. He reached Jeannie, she raised her right arm, put it around his neck and he picked her up like she was a feather! She still had the blanket around her legs, and as he (Carl) carried her down to the chair, she said “Joanie, give him our phone # and Larry, will we see you next week?”

“You sure will” I replied, and I'm still holding Joanie's hand. Joanie looks up at me with tears in her eyes and says “polio, bad, bad”. She says “here is our (get our) phone # and call if you want, cause I have to go with them tonite!”

So call I did, and invited both gals to go out to the Clock Drive In, and also to a drive in movie. They accepted, so as I pulled up with top down, and started to get out of the car, here came Carl, carrying Jeannie and when I opened the door he put her in the front seat. Joanie was behind him and crawled in beside her sister.

Well for about 6 months I dated each of them, but not together. I used to have an 8x10 glossy of them together, but that was 60 some years

ago, and it got lost I think. Joanie was very, very pretty with the black hair and figure, but Jeannie was heart stopping beautiful, and sad ending was a year later, the polio got her and she died. I was always careful to date each of them, because I was never sure if what I felt for Jeannie was sympathy or ??? Fortunately the race car

was my 1st love. So, I survived. The factory stroker Merc crank came out in 1947 or 8 and bumped the

flathead up to 100 hp. Then if you stroked it 1/8 and bored the block an 1/8 you had 300 inches, and they sure would come off the line! McGrath & Ayulo ran them in CRA (Calif. Roadster Assoc.) not Calif. Racing Assoc. which was much later

Did you know that in 1911 at Indy the word “pits” was used, due to actual pits dug in the ground so that they could be serviced? You have seen my Dad & his “T” and he dug a pit in our garage and had a ladder to go down in to it! That was a “26 T”. I THINK.

Aloha everybody. I've been in the house for two days in a row. I was listening to Super Dave of 102.3 at 7:30 a.m. and he says its 21 degrees .!! Since I'm not going out there, I decided to start my article early. I was talking to one of my cousins in Hawaii

and she asked me “how cold is it really”. I told her it's so cold that I can't wear shorts or mini skirts! I had to find a skirt down to the knee's and wear socks! She told me it was 74 degrees and she was headed out for a run on the beach. I told her” bless your heart”!

I thought the cold was over, but no I wake up and I have icicles hanging from my porch and on my two beautiful Greek statues I have in my front yard. Water is frozen! I once again call my cousin in Hawaii.

She says I've never seen icicles” send me pictures”! She says, I have to hang up now we are going to “the beach for a picnic”! I told her “bless your heart”!

It's Thursday and it looks like its going to be 49 degrees. So, if that does happen, I'm going the VFW in Bay St. Louis they open at 4 pm and check if “Bite-Me Starr” is still on her diet ! Yes, she says, and I have not had a cigarette 12 hours! She was not happy with Bobby. He lost around 12 pounds just by switching to lite beer! All the usual suspects were there.

There is a new morning restaurant in Bay St. Louis, MS. Called “Sun Rise Café” open Mon-Fri 6:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. the address is 315 Reese St., it's on Hwy 90 across the street from Mississippi Power. Cindy runs the place and said they have only been open about 3 months. As you walk in, to your right is the cash register, and then the big kitchen with a door, so you can look in the kitchen!

As you look to the left Cindy has about 5 or 6 tables and one long table that seats 6. In the rear of the dinning area are 2 or 3 booths. Looks like the place seats 25. For you guys who like a big breakfast this is the place! For example: LOCO MOCO: White rice, Hamburger Steak, Two Fried Eggs, Onions & Gravy (piled high) $8.25. Maybe I can finally get my Steamed Rice, Eggs, and Spam. (Hawaiians favorite breakfast) Breakfast is served all day! I love biscuit & sausage gravy and the price is right. Her lunches also sound great!

After this stop I thought I would stop to look in at what used to be “da Little Café” on McLaurin St. in Waveland, MS. It is now going to be “Fat Boyz Burgers & More”. It was not open yet so I went next door to the health store (Herbal Alternatives). Joshua who was working told me he thinks they might open next month. I will check it out and let all of you know next month.

Since it was almost happy hour somewhere! I decided to hit the post office first. As I was pulling into the post office I noticed “ Clawzilla's” on Hwy 90 was closed. No sign or anything, just empty!

I jump into “Precious” (300 zx) (guess who fixed it for me) and pick up Larry and head for Tri-R-Bar & Grill on Coleman in Waveland, MS. They have happy hour 4 p.m.- 6 p.m. Mon.-Fri. (2-4-1 well and 2 for 1 Hamburgers) Larry loves the champagne by the glass which is not on happy hour, but he did fix my Precious! Sure hope Rob and Robby's Lobster Fest went well.

It's now Sunday and time for super bowl. My plan was to go to Sam's VFW in Lakeshore, MS, then head for VFW in Bay St. Louis, MS end up at the American Legion In Bay St. Louis (Larry as my designated driver) When we stepped outside nothing but fog! We went to Sam's VFW and just stayed there. They have two new big flat screen TV'S one behind the bar and one on right side of the bar. They had a full bar, and Sam was sitting at the VIP table watching the game (on the big TV) with a bunch of guys. They had all kinds of great food. Endora was doing a great job behind the bar.

Since I'm not talking to my cousin in Hawaii “ I did not call her”! I just knew she would say “Fog” oh that's to bad, “then she would say”, “I got to go now, we are going the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on the beach and watch the show and have dinner!!” Watch next month for some of my old and new places!

helping him work on his car, so she had learned a lot about engines and body work during that time. She was hoping that since show season would be starting soon, she and Sam would get their spark back. Sam enjoyed drag racing his car. That 454 was a

beast and he won many races. Today was Friday and Friday nights were race nights.

She was anxious to get off of work so she could go home and dress for the event. She enjoyed dressing up for her man. Sam liked her in dresses, so she would make a point to find new vintage ones to wear at the races and car shows they would attend together. Five o' clock couldn't get here fast enough. The grandfather clock in the shop clanged and she grabbed her things, turned out the lights and walked outside to lock the door. Sam always picked her up at six so he could get to the track at six-fifteen. He wanted to get there sooner, but had to wait on her to dress. By the time she got home, she only had thirty-five minutes, so she always picked her clothes out the night before and showered in the morning before work. All she had to do was change and fix her hair and make-up. She was pushing it, but it could be done. Sam honked the horn right as the clocked ticked to six. Skyla opened the door and waved, motioning to Sam that she would be right there. She quickly put on her shoes, dabbed a bit of perfume on her neck and threw her red lipstick in her purse as she walked out the door. "Hi honey" she said as she sat down into the car." "Hey" said Sam. They drove off in silence and headed toward the track. Skyla thought to herself, "he didn't notice me as usual. I even have on a new dress for him and he didn't no-tice me!" They arrived at the track. Sam dropped her off at the stands while he drove over to register and sign release forms. The

It was almost spring and car show season was around the corner. Skyla was excited this year because her boy-

friend Sam was going to enter his bright yellow, "71 Nova at the Atomic Blast in Gulfport, Mississippi. She loved his car and fantasized about owning a muscle car of her own. She really wanted a '74 AMX Javelin. Not many people knew what a Javelin was. I suppose that’s why she wanted one. They were rare, and she liked to be different. She enjoyed anything that was unique.

Her Mother owned a vintage store. I guess that’s why Skyla enjoyed that sort of thing. she was like her mother. The store housed items like clothing from the forties, retro furniture and jewelry. Her mom even owned a pale blue 1972 Volkswagon hippie van. She would use the van to sell her wares at swap meets and car shows on occasion and leave Skyla to man the store.

Skyla met Sam one of those times she was in charge of her Mother’s store. He drove up in that terrific Nova. She watched him as he stepped out of the car, and casually ran his fingers through his slick, black hair. He opened the door, stopped at the counter and smiled at her. She stared for a second then realized she needed to say something. “May I help you sir?” she asked. He continued to smile and said “yes ma'am!” “I need to find a nice vintage ashtray for a birthday gift for my mom. She collects them since she quit smoking ten years ago.” “Sure thing” said Skyla. “Follow me this way.” Skyla led him to an area that displayed glass wares, and there were about seven vintage ashtrays on the counter. “How about this one?” Skyla picked up a bright orange ashtray from what looked like to be from the sixties. It was shaped like a kidney and looked more like an art piece, than an ashtray. “Perfect" said Sam. Sam followed Skyla back to the counter to check out. “Oh, I guess I should have asked how much?” said Sam. “It’s only thirty-two dollars” said Skyla. “That sounds like a fair price” said Sam. He handed her the money and she gave him his change. As he started to walk away he said, “There is one more thing you can help me with.” “Sure, what is it?” “I would like to call you sometime, is that ok?” Skyla smiled shyly, said o.k., and wrote down her number for him. “Thanks” said Sam. “I’ll give you a call tomorrow.” "Sounds good” Skyla said. And that is how they started dating one year ago. Their first date was actually at a car show. Skyla loved the excitement of the shows. The hot rods starting their loud engines, the low riders scraping the pavement. Oh, how she wished she owned her own, but she was happy riding in the passenger seat of Sam’s car. She felt special when she did. Sam called her his car jewelry. He said she dressed it up.

Things started to change recently between her and Sam. He did-n’t compliment her as much, he didn’t take her as many places. She thought he would propose to her by now, but their relationship seemed to be getting worse, not better. He promised her that he would help her get a hot rod of her own. She had spent many nights

races started promptly at seven. All of the drag cars were lining up to hit the track. Skyla saw Sam in line, out of his car talking to Rod-ney who was also out of his car. Rodney was a well known racer in the area. His ride is a 1982 Camaro with a Corvette LT1 motor. Rodney has been racing for five years. Whatever they were talking about, it surely was an animated conversation. Each of them point-ing this way and that way, getting closer and closer to each others personal space. Finally, they shook hands and got back into their cars. "Uh oh" thought Skyla. I think I know what is going on. Sam and Rodney made it up to the starting line. They burned out and lined up side by side. Skyla watched the lights flash from red, to yellow to Green. Both of the guys screeched to a start and took off. It was neck and neck for a few seconds then something happened! Rodney's car bolted out in front of Sam's and made it to the finish line first! Sam had lost. Skyla took off running to the pits to meet him. Sam drove up after Rodney and fell out of his car cursing.

Skyla instantly knew what had happened. Sam bet his pink slip and had lost to Rodney. "That's just great!" she said with her hands on her hips. Sam looked at her and said, "Don't start Skyla!" "I did it to myself! I didn't know that jack ass installed nitrous in his car since the last time we raced. I didn't take the time to look." "Hey watch the name calling dude!" said Rodney. Sam started towards Rodney with a vengeful look in his eyes, but then stopped himself. He turned back to his Nova, opened his door and rummaged through the glove box. He came out of the car, walked over to Rodney and shoved the title to his car in his hand. "Here!" said Sam. "Nice do-ing business with you" said Rodney. He tipped his hat to Skyla and said "Ma'am." Skyla just gave him a dirty look and turned away. "What in the hell were you thinking Sam!" said Skyla. Now you

don't have a car!""Gee, you think I don't know that?" "What are we going to do about the Atomic Blast show?" said Skyla. "Is that all you care about, that damned show?" said Sam. "Do you not care that I just lost my car?" said Sam. "Of course I care!" said Skyla. Lately that car was all she cared about. It got her lots of attention. She cared more about that car than Sam lately, what with the way he had been ignoring her. A photographer was supposed to be at that show taking photos for a magazine. She was very interested in shooting Skyla's photo with the Nova. Now what was she supposed to do? Sam started to walk away. When he noticed Skyla wasn't following him he turned and said, "well, are you coming or not?" Skyla looked up at said, "no, you go on I'll find a ride." "Figures" said Sam as he walked away. Skyla looked around the grounds and found her friend Victoria. "Hey, can I hitch a ride home with you?" "Sure, but where is Sam" said Victoria. "Who cares!" said Skyla. "Well, ok then…hop in!" Skyla was quiet all the way home. Fifteen minutes later she was at her front door. "Thanks girl" Skyla said to her friend. "Anytime, call me tomorrow and tell me all about it, ok?" "Alright" said Skyla. She walked into her house, went into her room and plopped down on her bed. A sheet of paper fell onto the floor. It was the Atomic Blast show flyer. She picked it up off of the floor. She was going to go. She was going without Sam. She had to get her photos taken by that photographer. She would find some-one with a better hot rod than Sam has…..oh wait…had! Skyla changed into her night clothes and settled into bed. She was going to that show! Who could bring her. She had plenty of friends that were going. She would find a way. Her eyes started to flutter. Damn, was she tired! That evening she dreamt of hot rods and her-self posing with them. She watched herself smiling demurely, as the flash on a camera illuminated the night sky. Yes, she would be there!

……stay tuned as the drama unfolds, at the Atomic Blast in Gulfport, Mississippi, March 14th-15th.

Terry Mason’s

OK I'm really chomping at the bit as the old saying goes to get the 2014 car show season underway. By this point, in my mind, I was to have the new Hot Rod Show trailer in its enclosed stall and all the little details finished to make it the perfect car show music trailer…the best laid plans of mice and men. Well, the holidays, the weather and

some jerk with a $200,000 trailer ahead of mine, has delayed my best laid plans. The holidays we all enjoy and know about the time off that will be taken, the weather is out of our control, we know that and kind of plan for it. But it's hard to plan for a guy with a $200,000 trailer ahead of you jumping up and down about his trailer to the point where everyone else is pulled off the assembly line to get his trailer ready. Is his $200,000 trailer more important than my $25,000 trailer? You better believe it is and I just had to suck it up. Tomorrow morning I will make the trek to the bank to sign my life away for the remaining balance on the trailer and I hope I'm within two weeks of picking it up. If I don't have the trailer by next month's column deadline, I'll be writing next month's column from behind bars. Not really, but close to it and I like the way it sounds. All I've had to look at with the new trailer are the rims I picked out…so here's a sneak peak.

Many car guys have followed the building of the new trailer and are consistently asking me about it. “Have you got it yet?” seems to be the standard question. My answers have varied with my mood at the delays. When you design something, pay a large down payment and then have to wait three months for it, its tough. I am not the most patient person!

When they call to say the trailer is ready, our plan is to be up early on a Friday morning to pick it up. If there are any corrections to the design, (ain't right when I get there) the factory will have all day to get it right before I take delivery. I know once I take delivery, it's mine. I know it has a warranty, but I want it right when I leave the factory. It's not like I can just run it back over to Georgia for an adjustment.

The next project I'll be saving my pennies for is a golf cart to go into the Hot Rod Show trailer. The trailer has a spot in the design to fit the golf cart and d-rings positioned in the floor for securing it. Here's what I'll be looking for... I want a Club Car brand golf cart that is a few years old. The reason I want the Club Car is based on the research I have done. The Club Car has an aluminum frame so it doesn't rust. It also has a tray for those six batteries to sit in. The tray is important because when you have six big batteries, you are going to get some leakage. I want it to leak into a tray, instead of the floor of the trailer or the garage. So keep your eyes out for me a good used one as I save my money.

We did get a chance to get out of town and head up to Jackson, MS for the annual state Hot Rod meeting of the car clubs. There was a good turn out. About 80 folks were on hand representing their car clubs. The meeting is held each year so all the clubs can let each other know what weekend their show will be in an effort to not put shows on top of each other. There is always a little lap over, but this meeting tries to limit it by good ole communication. I got to present the Hot Rod Show to the group and got to meet some of the great guys I have talked to by phone.

Did you get a chance to see the Beatles special on CBS? The Beatles: The Night that Changed America? It's been 50 years since the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show and this special was a tribute to that night. I will never forget it. I was in the second grade and I had become a huge Beatles fan. It also started a hair war at my house. I'll never forget a few

weeks later I bought a Beatles wig at the local pharmacy for about $2. I had it on when I walked in the house. You should have seen the look on my dad's face when he saw me with that wig on. He took it off me and slung it across the room and said no son of mine is going to look like that. I never saw the wig again.

My greatest love for the Beatles was their early music. Meet The Beatles and With The Beatles were my favorite albums. I guess I liked it because it was so pure. It was the Beatles in the beginning before they tried to find themselves or reinvent themselves. Don't get me wrong I loved every Beatles hit song. But the early stuff was magical.

Back in the 70's…the three funniest comedians were George Carlin, Richard Prior and Gallagher. Well Gallagher stopped by the TV station to promote a show coming to one of the casinos. He is still funny at 67. I got to hang out with him for about half an hour before he went on. He told me he had three heart attacks and was brought back from the dead. He gave his four houses to his kids and all his money. So now he travels around the country 52 weeks a year telling jokes and living in hotel rooms. I asked him… “you work 52 weeks a year?” he said yes, its not hard I tell jokes for a living.

Hope you remembered Valentine's Day and stayed out of the doghouse. I called McDonald's for reservations to take my baby out. The lady that answered the phone laughed and hung up on me. What kind of customer service is that? So we ended up going to a local steak house. It was great and everything was fine until it was time to go. Well Scotty couldn't run fast enough and we got caught and had to wash dishes. My friend said I didn't have to out run the guy, I just had to out run my wife Scotty. But I told him I HAD to go back… with Valentine's Day and all.

In the wintertime, car guys get their fix in many different ways. Hope you find one that works for you! A lot can be accomplished in the garage and when that is done you can get to cleaning and organizing. Either way it's something to do to pass the winter doldrums and maybe just get you closer to spring and the blooming of yet another car show season where you can enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind!

Til next month…

Blue Bird Build Text & pictures provided by MCC Member Mike Martin

Larry Chedotal is a long time member of the Mississippi Classic Cruisers. Originally from New Orleans, Larry and his father, Larry Chedotal Sr., have owned and operated a cemetery operation in New Orleans for many years. Seeing that there was an opportunity in the Madison County area of central Mississippi, they bought a small ex-isting cemetery on the west side of Highway 51 just north of the Madison-Ridgeland city border and started the Natchez Trace Ceme-tery operation in 1973. The operation went well and they built a full service funeral home in 2002. They have continued to enjoy a profit-able operation here, providing a needed service to the community. The General Manager of the operation is MCC board member and car lover Mike Hudgins.

Back in 1983 Larry, Sr., always Ford lovers, bought a 1957 Ford Thunderbird vehicle from a well-known New Orleanian. It was al-ways Larry Sr.'s intent to restore the vehicle which was somewhat the worse for wear but has the original motor and transmission. The years rolled on with nothing done to the car. In all the years the car was always kept inside preserving it well for a future restoration. In 2012 Larry talked with his friend and fellow MCC club member Mike Martin about taking on the partial restoration of the T-bird. Martin was willing and took possession of the car in March 2011. This plan was good in one way in that the warehouse where the T-bird was stored was leveled by a hurricane just after the T-bird was brought to Madison. The plan was to get the body and frame straight and paint the car back to its original Starmist Blue color. Larry Jr. was to get the motor and transmission rebuilt and to restore the frame before mating it back up with the body. Larry Jr. was then to restore the car back to an as-new condition. All of this took place as planned, up to a point. The body was chemically dipped and then E-coated at the Nissan sub-facility. There were a few patches needed but the body was in good shape overall. The car has both a hard top (white) and a convertible top. Once the painting was over (a multi month process) the body was reunited with the frame and Larry Jr. took the car away to finish the restoration. Things don't always go as planned and soon the car was back at Mike's. Larry's duties running cemetery and funeral home operations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida left him little time to work on the car.

Although his father had seen the car painted on the frame Larry wanted to do the restoration of the car without his father's knowledge and to surprise him at MCC's Scarecrow Cruise and Car Show in October 2013. Mike got the car back in March 2013 and started on the restoration. Many, many parts and many, many hours were needed to finish the car to a high level. Larry Jr. told one whopper after another to keep his father from finding out that the car was being worked on. Using hook or crook techniques he talked his father into coming to Madison for the Scarecrow event on Oct. 19th, 2013. Larry Sr. and his wife walked upon the finished T-bird and there was only one word to describe his reaction: speechless. Larry Jr. is to take the car to his father's New Orleans' house in early 2014. He and two helpers are going to need a couple of days to clean the garage up enough to make a space. Larry Sr. only drove the car one time some 30 years ago, going around one city block. He can now again drive this fine car in real style!

Could this the next big event on the Mississippi Gulf Coast? Classic, custom, antique and traditional cars / trucks / motorcycle from as far away as Arkansas made the trip to the “Coast” last year.

The first weekend in April kicks off the spring/summer activities along Mississippi’s popular coastline. What sets this event apart from other local shows is the schedule of local things to do. Cruizers are encouraged to attend events taking place along the Gulf Coast.

The ideal weather, clean beaches, harbor activities, verity of club charity organizations and local business events draw people from all over the country.

For some car enthusiasts, the Crusin’ the Coast event in October is the only time they get to see what the Coast has to offer. Now there is a springtime event in a much more local friendly atmosphere. Room rates are a bargain, there is no registration fee, and all activities are al-a-cart and most are free to attend.

Activities includ; The 49 Invasion - a chance to Cruise Hwy 49. Stopping in at a favorite

diner for a bite and end up at the Best Western Plus parking lot on Hwy 49 for a cruise-in. Cruizers will enjoy cruise-in music from Terry Masons Hot Rod Show trailer. Here are some of the activities taking place during the Gulf Coast Auto Show weekend - April 3 - 6 Gulfport, MS Gulf Coast Yacht & Boat Super Show April 4 Biloxi, MS Leann Rimes at the Hard Rock Casino April 4 Biloxi, MS The Oak Ridge Boys - at the Golden Nugget Biloxi April 4-5 Spring Mayhem - Harrison County Fairground.
