OVAL

The much anticipated round 2 of the Dirt Oval 4 South Africa National

Championship was held at Victory Raceway in Port Elizabeth on the 30th

of April. Heavy rainfall prior to the event, put doubt in the minds of the

organizers as to whether or not racing would take place on the set date or if

it would have to be postponed. Although there was light rainfall on the day,

plans went ahead to run the event.

Page 7: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

The Circuit had been well prepared by the members of victory raceway, but a heavy pool of water lay in the infield of the turn opposite the pits. This drew concerns amongst com-petitors as a mistake into the infield on this turn could end all chances

of victory.

In the end there was a slight drama and a delay after the first round of

heats, when the track surface became bumpy at the far corner. The organizers soon brought out a

grader and reprepped the track surface for racing to go ahead smoothly. The repair work made a significant difference and improved the racing immensely for the rest of

the evening.

1660 Class

The biggest and arguably the most competitive class on the evening was the 1660 class. A brilliant 17 cars took to the circuit making up an epic battle for glory. There was one man however, who rose to the occasion and put in an unstoppable

performance.

The current SA 2 holder, Christopher Burisch

dominated the evening’s proceedings and took home a maximum point’s haul which

ultimately took him straight into the lead of this year’s

championship. Best of the rest was current SA 3 holder, Marius Vos

DIRT

OVAL

who left the circuit with his second 2nd position in the two national events of the year. This also meant

that he would retain his 2nd position in the championship

going into round 3. Percy Noah and Michael Muller both had

consistent drives on the evening and finished tied for 3rd overall.

This leaves Noah 4th in the standings and Muller 10th. Shawn Bester rounded out the top 5, while Port Elizabeth’s Christo van Staden finished 6th leaving him 5th in the

championship. The round 1 winner, Christiaan Richter had a much tougher evening in Port Elizabeth and could only manage 7 place which dropped him down to

3rd in the championship. East London’s Delwin Crous piloted his way to 9th place, which leaves him

7th in the championship. East London’s Zaine Knickelbein looked to be in for a strong points haul on

the evening as he consistently challenged the top competitors,

unfortunately a suspension failure and a roll severely dented

his chances.

This left him 11th both for the evening and in the championship.

Some of the other local competitors who entered were

unfortunately also plagued by bad luck.

2.1 Modified class

Hansie Moore has really set down a marker so far this season. He had a nearly perfect round 1, and came back stronger for round 2 taking a

clean sweep of victories for the evening.

He now has half a race meetings worth of points more than his

closest rival in the championship and seems

destined to bring home the SA 1 title. A young man working

extremely hard to bring home his first ever national number is East London’s Jody van Zummeren. The young man fought back from an accident in heat 1, and was still able

to do damage limitation and finish in the top 5. He went on to take 2nd overall for the night and with

it move into 2nd in the overall championship. If he continues

driving the way he is, he will have many championships behind his

name in the not too distant future!

Burger van der Westhuizen’s performance on the evening was good enough for 3rd overall. As he did not drive in round 1 he has

moved into 11th in the championship. Barend Du Plessis was consistent in finishing in 4th

overall, this has kept him firmly inside of the top 3 in the

championship. Local man Pieta

DIRT

OVAL

Victor was able to haul himself into 5th overall for the evening and as he did not compete in round 1 he is

now in 12th overall in the championship. Port Elizabeth’s Steph van Niekerk came home in

9th overall.

Hot Rod Class

Dylan Nel managed to make it 2 from 2 in Port Elizabeth as the

round 1 winner claimed victory again in round 2. Current SA 3 Hendrik Beets made came home in 2nd and with it moved

into 2nd in the championship. Jason Jordaan was 3rd on the

evening moving him into 4th in the championship.

Pierre Kotze, The SA 1 holder in the 2.1 Class, made a shock move and abandoned his 2.1 challenge to

DIRT

move to the Hot Rod class in round 2. He came home 4th for the

evening with a consistent performance. This leaves him in 10th in the championship. Han

Koch Brand came 5th for the evening and lies 5th in the championship while Nicky

Koegelengberg finished 6 for the evening, but is currently 3rd in the

championship standings.

Midget Class

There is currently one name above the rest in the midget class and that is the name of Wessel Rabe. The man has had an amazing season so far with a perfect points haul at round 1 and a points haul very close to perfect in round 2. He has won 2 out of 2 and has a comfortable lead

in the championship. He is looking destined to retain his SA1 Title

unless something dramatic happens in the latter part of the season. The fight for 2nd is a lot

closer with current SA 3 Gerrie Slabber and Dante De Ronde fighting it out tooth and nail.

It was Slabber who claimed 2nd place at round 2, but it is De Ronde,

who sits 2nd overall in the championship after the pair

traded places at round 1.

SA 2, Eerick Horn was 4th for the evening and lies 4th in the

championship, ahead of Tol Hanekom who was both 5th on the evening and in the championship

after round 2.

V8 AMS Class

Bennie Greyling had a stellar evening in the V8 AMS class, with a dominant victory for the evening. This did his championship position a world of good as it elevated him up to 2nd overall. 2nd overall for the evening however was the local crowd favorite Pieta Victor who now commands a comfortable lead

in the championship standings.

If all goes well another SA1 Plate

Should be heading in the direction of Port Elizabeth by the end of the Season. Border’s Ryno Hattingh drove his little Lexus V8 out of his skin on the evening. The man from

east London made a last minute decision to drive up and enter the national and as a result missed the grid draw forcing him to start both heats from the back.

Consistency gave him a solid point’s haul and a mid-pack starting

position for the final and a great

DIRT

OVAL

drive saw him come home 3rd for the evening. As he didn’t enter round 1, he is currently down in 13th in the championship, never the less, it was a performance to be

proud of.

Jan Wessels came home in 4th overall which has lifted him to 5th in the championship, while victory raceways, Johan Swart came home 5th and currently lies 6th in the

championship. Current SA 3 holder, East London’s Shawn Victor came home 6th and is currently 7th in the championship, while Arrie van Zyl and JP Du Plooy finished

in 7th and 8th respectively and currently sit in 3rd and 4th in the

national championship.

Late Model Class

If there was ever anyone who is seemingly unbeatable it would be Chris Liebenberg. The man has a car with so much horsepower and straight-line speed that the other drivers don’t really stand a chance.

This is emphasized by the fact that the man has won every heat and

final of this year’s championship and sits on a perfect score after leaving round 2. The current SA 3 Gabrie Gelderblom finished the evenings racing in 2nd overall and is also 2nd overall in the national

championship.

Current SA 2, Fanie Mostert came

DIRT

OVAL

Page 14: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

home 3rd overall and is currently 4th in the championship. PJ Fourie finished the night in 4th and is currently 3rd in the championship, while

Danie Sandenbergh finished in 5th for the evening and is 7th in the championship. Eerick Horn finished the evening in 7th, but holds onto

5th in the championship.

On the Sunday afternoon, 2 May 2016, PEOTR used their rain date and 97 cars lined the circuit in excellent weather conditions. The track was in

perfect condition and held out well throughout the 6 hours of racing. There were too many thrills and spills to mention throughout the event,

but the racing was tough and exciting.

The visitor list included top drivers including Tersius van Tonder, now from Cape Helldrivers and the husband and wife team from Rustenburg, Charlie and Arista Rothman. As a result of a track incident, Tersius was not on full pace and the much expected dice with Charlie Rothman was

not to be.

The Beginners class star entertainer was no doubt Karen Weitz, who pulled a stunt spin that Piet Scheepers had never even thought of. Karen

survived somewhat rattled and also enjoyed a black flag first time out.

In the 2.1 Class, Dane van Tonder again ruined the front end of his Golf with true stock car racing style. Cool cat and super smooth, Edwin Drake, once again showed

how it must be done.

Piet Scheepers remains in a class of his own in the HR class, but Marius Rautenbach is back and also joined

by Duane Brassell. Complementing the HR class,

Danno de Lange finally got the rotary motor to work and with a bit

more sorting, will become a front runner shortly.

The Heavy Metal class was won by Johan Momberg and the Super Six class by Deon Els with Tersius van

Tonder snr 2nd. Philip Victor destroyed the ex Eddy Banks

Sierra after hitting the wall with vengeance.

Charlie Rothman emerged the 1660 winner after the race had to be stopped

early after a track incident.

Arista Rothman won the AMS class in a very classy looking Bitzer car. An

event for the record books.

South African National Karting Championship

Round 2

KARTING

Round 2 of The South African National Karting championship was held on Sunday 1 May 2016 at the Celso Scribante Kart Circuit in Port Elizabeth. Most of the top competitors had attended the regional race 2 weeks prior to the event, to get their setups on track for the national and this had put them in good stead.

Local Knowledge always plays a role at a national event however and the Port Elizabeth and East London “locals” were determined to take full advantage.

Page 18: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

60cc Mini Rok Class

In the 60cc Mini Rok class, an impressive field of 18 competitors graced the circuit on race day. Local knowledge played in the favour of

Joshua Coertze who took full advantage to take victory on the day and with it the lead of the National Championship. Kwanda Mokoena played it cool and drove consistently to finish in 2nd overall with his sights set firmly on the main prize at the end

of the season.

Daniele Patrizi’s 3rd overall secures a solid current standing of 4th in the championship, while Jayden Els came home 4th and is currently 5th in the championship. In an Uncharacteristic dip in form, Charl Visser slipped from first overall to 3rd in the championship with a 5th overall on the day. He will definitely want to fight back hard in the

following two races of the season.

Port Elizabeth’s Kenzo Barnard finished 9th on the day to secure 11th overall in the championship so far,

KARTING

Page 19: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

while Aiden Barnard finished 12th and is currently 15th in the Championship. Kiesha Potgieter 16th to narrowly

edge her East London Rival Sebastian Smith and Tristan Coertze

in 17th and 18th.

Maxterino Class

It is never easy to race in 2 classes, you have to do double the laps,

double the distance and double the work of your competitors. Kwanda Mokoena has become a master of this

though, and is able to consistently compete at the top of both

the mini Rok and Maxterino classes. On the day when he had

already achieved a 2nd place in mini rok, he dominated proceedings in the Maxterino class as he went on to win

all 3 heats on the day and move himself up into 4th in the National championship after some problems at round 1 in Cape Town. 2nd overall was another driver doing double duty,

and Charl Visser would be a lot happier with the Maxterino result from

KARTING

Page 20: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Port Elizabeth than the mini rok result.

He is now in 3rd overall in both championships. 3rd overall on the day

went to Joseph Oelz who has managed to hold onto his

championship lead. 4th overall on the day was Troy Dolinschek who is

currently 2nd overall in the championship standings.

Junior Max Class

Jason Coetzee was the lad on form in Port Elizabeth as he managed to take

victory on day. This would promote him into 4th in the

championship standings after he scored a 0 in heat 2 of round 1. A

consistent performance saw Daniel Duminy come home in 2nd place, narrowly missing out on the overall

victory, but importantly securing his current 2nd place in the national

championship standings.

Sebastian Boyd fought back hard after a disastrous first heat and did major damage limitation as he was able to hang on to 1st in the championship standings after claiming 3rd overall for

the day. Sam Lockhoff was another driver fighting his way back into the championship after a worse

than expected round 1. His 4th overall for the day, definitely did help his cause and elevated him to 8th in the National standings. A consistent finish from Karl Pitzer took him to 5th

overall for the day, but more importantly 3rd in the National

championship.

Senior Max Class

The closest championship battle in this year’s South African National Championship seems to be coming

KARTING

Page 21: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Motorsport EC | June 2016 | 21

from the Rotax Senior Max class. This class has for a long time been a

favorite class for competitors moving up the ranks in the country and has produced some spectacular battles over the years. This season the main

title contenders have shown themselves as worthy competitors

with the top 5 separated by only a handful of points.

Round 1 went the way of Dino Stermin who used his home track advantage in

Cape Town well. Round 2

however belonged to Delon Thompson who has taken the

championship lead in the process. 2nd place in Port Elizabeth went to Joshua Dias who now sits in 5th place in the championship, while 3rd place went to one of the roses amongst the thorns in the class with Fabienne Lanz closing

out the podium.

This even with an engine failure at the end of heat 1 meant that the Gauteng lady found

herself in 4th place in the

KARTING

Page 22: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Motorsport EC | June 2016 | 22

championship when the dust settled. 4th overall went to Delano Fowler, who is now in 3rd place in the National Championship while 5th place went to

Dino Stermin. Stermin would be disappointed to lose his championship lead, but will know that it’s not over yet, and will be hoping to come back

stronger at the next round.

The 2nd Lady competitor on the day, was 6th placed Shannon Jackson

from East London. A consistent season so far has seen the young lady in 6th overall in the championship and she will be looking forward to racing at her new “adopted” home circuits in Gauteng later in the season. The next best Eastern Cape competitors were the two local Port Elizabeth drivers Cameron Kelly and Kean Barnard in

8th and 9th positions.

DD2 Class

Some drivers have the ability to make the most of any circuit they race on, and these are usually the best of the best. Others are able to make the best of any situation even when they are faced with adversity, and these are

usually also very competitive drivers.

There must be a special mention made of Michael Stephen however, Home circuit or not, the man who drives in the DD2 Masters class and carries an extra weight penalty to the normal DD2 competitors gave an

absolute master class at the Port Elizabeth National. He is well known for his abilities and was only a lap or two away from becoming another

South African World Karting Champion last year before being

KARTING

Page 23: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Motorsport EC | June 2016 | 23

shunted off circuit, but his racing caliber is 2nd to none. Michael did not put a foot wrong in Port Elizabeth and came home with a maximum points haul and leads both the DD2 and DD2

Masters championships.

Second place went to Bradley Liebenberg who currently lies in 3rd in

the National Championship. A consistent drive from Julian van der Watt saw him finish in 3rd overall and

hang on to that 2nd place in the National championship. Benjamin Habig came home 4th to secure his 4th place in the championship while Stuart White finished 5th and moved

into 9th in the championship.

The best of the rest of the local drivers was Shaun Gradwell who

finished 18th and Craig Borges who finished 19th.

DD2 Masters Class

So once again, Michael Stephen claimed victory in the DD2 Masters class, ahead of Nick Verheul in 2nd Jonathan Pieterse in 3rd and Marouan Selmi in 4th and Pascal Acquaah in

5th overall.

The Next Round of the championship will take place at the Idube karting

Circuit in KZN

A great night of spectacular racing took place at the Summerpride Showground’s Circuit on Saturday 14 May 2016. The latest round of the

championship had to be delayed a week from its original 7 May scheduled date due to bad weather and an extremely wet track surface.

This time however, the weather played along and an extremely well prepared track surface awaited the drivers for the evening.

This event would be the last race before the highly anticipated 1660 challenge which will be held on the 18th of June – Weather permitting –

and the local drivers were taking the opportunity to do some final tweaking to their setups before this mammoth event comes to town.

1660 Class

The 1660 class has grown over the past few races and was the class with by far the most competitors on the night. This being the featured

class in the upcoming 1660 challenge will be one to watch.

At the end of the evening it was Delwin Crous, who managed to take victory after an intense battle ensued between the top 4 drivers. It was a

real wheel to wheel affair with drivers trading paint at every turn.

Reigning champion Zaine Knickelbein came home in 2nd overall in a car still battered and

bruised and most likely battle hardened after he rolled the car at

the South African National championship in Port Elizabeth 2

weeks prior to this weekend’s racing.

Wesley Collins came home 3rd for the evening, but no doubt has some tricks ready and waiting up

his sleeve for the June Showdown. Quinton Knickelbein made a

welcome return to racing with a 4th overall on his first night out in his

new car.

Wesley Collins commented, “The level of competitiveness has been

really tight between the top 5 competitors, and we have seen a

bit of elbow out racing! Looking forward from tonight to the up and coming 1660 challenge on

the 18th of June, which will showcase the level of our

competitors in east London and add some of the current top South African runners in the class. It will make for some excellent racing and definitely a night not to be missed. Possibly 25 to 30 pit bulls

in the goldfish bowl!”

Junior Hot Rod Class

Corbin Holloway Blew away all

competition in Junior Hot Rod class, with an absolutely dominant

performance on the evening. Hollow was never under threat and

lead every lap on his way to taking 1st overall for the night with

a clean sweep of victories.

Rudi Smith had his hands full all evening as he was shadowed to line in each heat by Damon Du Preez, who showed some good pace in his first race meeting.

Smith finished 2nd overall with Du Preez in 3rd.

2.1 Modified Class

The 2.1 Class was a tight affair with the ever spectacular Donovan Voogt steering his way through

some of the carnage to claim victory. Jason Prinsloo managed to take home 2nd overall, despite the fact that a puncture to his left front

wheel heavily dented his chances. George Noah steered clear of the danger to finish in a well-deserved

3rd overall for the evening.

Hot Rod Class

Dean Potgieter put together a truly solid performance as he drove

from strength to strength in the Super Hot Rod Class. It was a great victory in the end ahead of a

DIRT

hard charging Quentin De Lange. William Hunter settled for third place for the evening, banking some solid championship points.

Nigel Burmeister had a brilliant debut and looked more and more competitive as he acclimatized himself to his car and finished 4th

overall for the evening.

V8 AMS Class

In the V8 AMS class, some extra

spice was added to the mix for the evening as Shawn Victor, who is

currently ranked 3rd in South Africa entered for the nights

racing. It was Victor who came out on top by the end of the night, ahead of Ryno Hattingh. Hattingh came into the evenings racing still

on a high after finishing an incredible 3rd overall at the

national event 2 weeks prior in Port Elizabeth.

Clinton Green once again banked

solid points for the evening with a consistent drive to 3rd overall. Quinton Schwartz came home in 4th overall on his dirt oval debut.

The next race will be the Open Invitational 1660 Challenge to be held on the 18th of June. This will be an event not to be missed. For more information contact Rose

for the day. Red Scholtz put together a much improved

CHALLENGE

4 X 4 Challenge - Stutterheim Quarry28 May 2016

Article: Richard PookPhoto’s: Vicky Barker

With the third leg of the 4x4 challenge series been held in Stutterheim, many folk took the opportunity to make a weekend of it and decided to

travel up on Friday afternoon.

One never has to ask the guys twice to have a good old fashioned braai and bon fire, however due to possible “excess smoke inhalation”, many of the guys who slept over seemed to battle with getting up early the next

morning?

Saturday morning dawned with another spectacular day and as clockwork, the V8 Club was on site with much needed coffee and

breakfast buns to settle the hunger pains. After the final preparations on the track, the challenge got under way at about 9:30am.

Drivers were immediately thrown into the deep end with the first obstacle been “the mother of all twisters” (I say this as we had not yet seen obstacle

number 8).

Page 43: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Motorsport EC | June 2016 | 43

4X4

CHALLENGE

A twister is where you have to traverse huge mounds of sand at an angle and it forces alternate wheels of the vehicles up off the ground,

thereby reducing traction.

Taking the correct line through here and carrying just the right amount of momentum with you, is crucial. As usual, some made it look easy while others couldn’t

make it over the first hump.

From here the next few obstacles consisted of loose gravel, sharp

turns and some BIG climbs. Driving was very technical,

because with very limited traction,

choosing the correct line the first time round was essential.

Contending with extreme side cambers and very slippery surfaces can make for some heart stopping moments as Mike Schreiber Snr would be able to tell you. Only a

cool head and some top draw driving skills saw him pilot his Jeep Rubicon out obstacle number 3

without rolling.

Obstacle 8 soon came around and before we could ride, we first had to figure out where the track went. All I can say, it that it was a LONG one! This obstacle was out of 120

Page 44: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Motorsport EC | June 2016 | 44

4X4

CHALLENGE

points and you had to work hard for every point you took away from it. It started off through a little mud

then into a hairpin 90degree corner. Up, down, around, side to side … almost on your side, up and out. That was just the first half of

the obstacle. Then came the twister section…. Let’s just say this one tested man and machine to the limit. If you let your concentration slip for one second, it would be the

end of it.

By this stage, points were still very close so once again we had a time trial…. This separates points and largely prevents 2 competitors from

finishing on exactly the same score.

This type of obstacle is truly a favourite with spectators as well as with the drivers, however I’m sure the 4x4 have some objection with been driven in this undignified

manner.

Casualties on vehicles were thankfully largely kept to a

minimum on the day with only Boyd Damaging a Diff and Richard

slashing a tyre during an altercation with a tree.

Coming to the end of the day and tallying scores, it was clear that it

Page 45: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Motorsport EC | June 2016 | 45

was a very close day of racing. In some classes, the top 3 positions were only separated by 30 points.

So again, a big congratulations to the winners of the respective

classes, as it was a close fought bat-tle.

In class A, Nigel and Vicky Burmeister took top honours while

Shane Peach and Gavin Burton finished 1sh in class B.

Leon Van Eden showed Class C how it was done and once again

Shaun Bezuidenhout showed everyone in class D a clean pair of

heels.

Last, but never least, a big thank you to all our sponsors…

Thanks to outdoor Warehouse for the amazing prizes as well as to the V8 Club for doing the food. Also thanks to Patrick from Nyati for

providing the security guards. Also big thanks to all the members

who assisted with organising, towing, transporting, setting up

and marshalling.

The next challenge on the calendar is in Kirkwood on Saturday, the

25th June at the Lookout.

Father’s Day

For many, a father’s influence is indescribable. When it comes to most young racing driver’s this is emphasized exponentially. For most, a father

is the introduction into the world of motorsport. He can be the inspiration, the motivation, the supporter, the advisor, the mechanic, the

team manager and the sponsor all in one.

A father can guide his son or daughter in the path that he sees fit. These day’s it is becoming more and more common for a son or daughter to be a

2nd or 3rd generation racer. This means that the parents, but most commonly the father, have been around a race circuit many years before and have gained valuable skills, and knowledge. This can often be the

Page 47: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

difference in a child’s motorsport career, as the head start this can provide ahead of the others who don’t have this advantage can be

completely immeasurable.

Speaking from my own experience, I have grown up in a motorsport

crazed family, and for me it has always been a way of life to be around a race circuit. My father was a dirt oval racer (stock-cars as it

was known back then) and a couple of my uncles were successful racers too. Even my mother took my dad’s car for a spin once or twice and can boast a trophy for rolling the car as

testament to this!

Had it not been for his influence though I may not have been

interested in the sport. If he had not been interested in the sport, would I have ever been able to get my big

break and manage to find myself in a race car one day? I don’t know, it is something that is always difficult to debate. I have seen it with friends though. Guys at school who would come with me to the track and love the experience, but because their fathers weren’t into it, it became difficult for them to get involved.

Some lost interest completely after a while, one or two

managed to eventually buy themselves something race-able, but by that time, they were so far behind those of us that had been racing for years that they struggled to find the pace to be competitive and this once again demotivated

them.

I was not privileged enough to ever have a top of the range racing machine, my father gave my

brother and I what he could. His experience however helped us

immensely as he was able to fine tune our setups and help us to be competitive with what we had. It was lessons we would carry with us

for years.

Both my brother and I managed to win border championships and it is thanks to our father that we were able to achieve this. Driving older

machines also taught us a lot and today we can be relatively

competitive no matter what we drive.

FEATURE

Page 49: Motorsport EC June 2016 | Issue 12

Motorsport EC | June 2016 | 49

Our father gave up his motorsport career for us to start ours, and I don’t know of a much better gift he could have ever given us. I am

pretty sure that soon my brother will be experiencing a similar situation as his son will become a 3rd generation racer, and grandpa will

be on standby to pass on all the knowledge he can.

A father is special in all aspects of life, but a motorsport father is just on another level. Thanks dad, and Happy Father’s Day!

Expert Tech Superbike Race Day

Perfect weather conditions and an absence of delaying “incidents” set the scene for a thrilling day’s racing in the Expert Tech All-Bike Race Day at the East London Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday when competitors from all over the country as well as from New Zealand tested their skills against

the competition in their respective classes.

There is no doubt that the Superbike class (1000cc motorcycles) produced the most exciting heats of the day as locals Travis Naude and Travis Warne showed the way around the circuit against Gauteng’s Piet-er de Vos and local veteran, Pierre le Roux, but perhaps the star of this

battle was young Kevin Redman, from Plettenberg Bay, who present-ed strong competition to the lead

group, on a 600cc Yamaha.

Redman emphasised his talent by being awarded the much-coveted “Bearing Man Big Balls Trophy”, which is awarded to the rider who clocks the top speed of the day

through the apex of the formidable Potters Pass bend. The strongest contester for the award,

Travis Warne, was a matter of 0.2kph slower than Redman, who

achieved a speed of 198.816kph.

The newly constituted Classic Superbike Racing Association

(CSRA) presented its own exciting contest, but with the

difference that Gauteng-based veteran Gavin Ramsay showed a

clean pair of heels to his opposition, taking both heats in fine style, but behind him, Port

Elizabeth’s Remi van den Berg, Gauteng’s Ettiene Louw and Cape Tonian, Tony Jones made their

presence felt on pre-1989 machinery that still puts in

competitive lap times on this circuit.

Bikes of smaller engine capacity contested the Powersport class and

produced shoulder to shoulder racing in a field of 15 bikes, with

Port Elizabeth’s Paul Jansen

emerging over-all victor for the day.

In the class for the up-and-coming champions of the future – 100cc Honda NSF – it was 10-year-old Jordan Breakspear who cleaned up in both heats. For the first time, this field of 5 competitors took to the main circuit to show their met-tle. The normal contest for this class is on the much shorter karting

circuit, but these youngsters showed that they are
