Extracting information from the CM MIB

The CM MIB is not a straight forward DBMS. The schema is created by, and runs under,

OSP, which is a middleware product mapping application defined objects to and from

relational databases. OSP differs from straight-vanilla SQL relational programming. It

provides an object interface to C++ types, such as, a valOid (an OSP identifier for objects),valIntList (a list of integer). OSP translates bi-directionally between objects and relations. This translation, as well as the access to the database itself, is completely transparent to both

developers and users. OSP also optimizes application performance and minimizes databasecommunication overhead by using object caching.

To write SQL scripts, which retrieve the OMC objects, the SQL script writer needs to know

    all of the following:

The OSP/OMC internally generated object class codes and object attribute codes.

What tables correspond to what object classes.

What column of a particular class-table corresponds to a particular attribute.

The algorithm that OSP uses to name-mangle tables and columns because ofInformixs 17-character table/column limit. This algorithm uses the generated classand attribute codes.

Know that oid attributes for OMC objects mean a pointer to another OMC objectstored in another table.

Know that each multi-valued (i.e. list) attribute is stored in a separate MVA tablewhich is joined with main object-class table to yield a single multi-valued attribute

    for a given object class.

In effect, trying to get object-attribute information out of a database means trying to

reproduce some of the functionality that OSP provides - which it achieves this throughC++/ESQL/cursor programming. A simple SQL scripting interface is not always sufficient

enough to do the same task.

While this manual provides most of the information required to do extractions based on theMIB tables, please note that some objects do not have all their attributes stored under theircorresponding table name, the most obvious examples being the new Frequency hopping

object contained by Cell, and the Path object. Note also the new mangled table names where

applicable, as well as the mangled attribute names. However in most cases, the data is storedin a single table, and can be extracted using SQL queries, or by unloading the tables, and then

    parsing them.

Note:The retrieval of MIB data using SQL queries is not recommended as it puts a load on

    the MIB processor.

    Using cmutil

The recommended method of extracting information from the CM MIB is to use the cmutil

utility which will extract all the attributes associated with each object regardless of whether or

not they are contained in a single MIB DBMS table. This can be run as omcadmin. Examplesof extracts using cmutil are:

The CommsLink object is used to represent a generic point to point link in the network. AMapLink object is created automatically when a CommsLink object is created. It isrecommended to use cmutilwith the commslink object as it has been enhanced specifically

    for adding/removing commslinks.

1610 new objects that do not have all attributes in same table

The objects which do not have all the data which can be viewed from a Detailed View stored

in their generic table in the MIB DBMS (.table2) are: Assoc_BSCs

    BTF

    BTP DHP

    FreqHopSys PATH

NOTE:The only guaranteed way to extract full information for these objects from the CMMIB is by using cmutil.

    Assoc_BSCs

The Detailed View also contains a Links section which is a straight read from the informationcontained in the child Conn_link objects.

    BTF

The Assigned DRI information contained in the BTF object is stored as

complex_connectivity datatype in a different table of the MIB DBMS. It is not stored in thebtftable2.

    PATH

The following attributes contain the link information for each path object but are stored in

different tables (to pathtable2) in the MIB DBMS.:

    link[1 ... 10] (stored outside pathtable2, in intlisttable2)

Description : There are 10 of these attributes, suchas, link1, link2, describing the links in

    the path.

    datatype : COMPLEX_CONNECTIVITY

    Values : Terminating Site: (0..40, 254)

    Upstream MSI: (0..50, 254)

    Upstream MMS: (0..1, 254)

    Downstream MSI: (0..50, 254)

    Downstream MMS: (0..1, 254)

254 is used for the TS-Switching site. The Site and Upstream/Downstream

    MSI/MMS identifiers contain 254 if thislink specifies a TS-Switch.

    commsLinkList (stored outsidepathtable2 in oidlisttable2)

This attribute is not on the PATH DetailedView.

Description : When PATHs are created, appropriateCommsLinks are created to represent thepoint-to-point links specified in link1 ..link10. Each PATH has a list ofCommsLinks which are associated withthat path. The commsLinkList attribute

    stores this information.datatype : OID_LIST

    Object summary

    Introduction

CM MIB objects are used to model the operation of the network at the OMC. The objects

within the MIB are contained in a logical hierarchy to reflect the network structure.

    Object types and properties

The MIB object types, which, can be accessed by user operations are listed below togetherwith their properties. For each object type the properties are as follows:

CardinalityCardinality defines the max number of objects of the relevant type that can be created under

the parent object. This field is used by both the OMC and the BSS.

    Auditable

Auditable indicates whether or not objects of the relevant type can be audited from the OMC.

Audit ensures that any changes, made at device level, in the network are reported and inserted

in the MIB. This field is only used by the OMC.

    BSS Creatable

BSS Creatable indicates whether objects of the relevant type can be created at BSS level by

an OMC operation. This field is used by both the OMC and the BSS.

    BSS Deletable

BSS Deletable indicates whether objects of the relevant type can be deleted at BSS level byan OMC operation. This field is used by both the OMC and the BSS.

    MIB Creatable

MIB Creatable indicates whether objects of the relevant type can be created in the MIB using

the Detailed Views or cmutil tools. This field is only used by the OMC.

    MIB Deletable

MIB Deletable indicates whether objects of the relevant type can be deleted from the MIBusing the Detailed Views or cmutil tools. This field is only used by the OMC.

    MIB Updatable

MIB Updatable indicates whether objects of the relevant type can be updated in the MIBusing the Detailed Views or cmutil tools. This field is only used by the OMC.

    Properties of useraccessible MIB objects

The properties of useraccessible MIB object types are as follows:

    Object Cardinality Auditable? BSSpermissions(C=Creatable)(D=Deletable)

    Attributes summary

    Introduction

Attributes are used to specify the configuration and operation of the MIB objects used to

model the network in the OMC.

    Attribute types and properties

The MIB object attributes are listed below together with a summary of their properties. For

each attribute the properties described are as follows:

    Attribute name.

    Datatype.

    Optional.

    BSS access.

    Valid range.

    Attribute name

The name of the attribute within the OMC MIB.

    Datatype

The datatype of the attribute may be one of the following:

    Integer

    A signed integer value.

    String

    An ASCII string (null terminated).

    Octet String

An octet string (not null terminated).

    Boolean

Either 0 or 1, the meanings assigned to these values are attributespecific and

provided in the relevant attribute description.

    Complex_GSM_cell_ID (GSM_ID)

A GSM standard for cell identification which consists of the following:Mobile Country Code (MCC) 3 octets.Mobile Network Code (MNC) 2 octets.

Local Area Identifier (LAI) 2 octets.

    Version 1.0

    Cell Identifier (CI) 2 octets.

The MNC and MCC are Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) encoded. The LAI and CImay be either BCD encoded or hexadecimal values.

    Complex_connectivity (CONNECT)

This type is used to describe the links in a path.

    OCTET_STRING

A set of 64 values, each of which is specified by a 2 octet integer.

    OID

An OID (Object ID) uniquely identifies an object. This type is used to define object

    relationships.

    OID_list

An OID_list (Object ID list) is used to identify the relationship between Path andCommsLink objects. This type is used in a CommsLink object to define the Pathobjects included in the CommsLink. When used with Path objects, the OID_list type

is used to define all CommsLinks in which the Path is included.

    Optional

The Optional flag of an attribute is used to indicate whether or not the attributerequires an assigned value when creating an object with which the attribute is

associated. Can be either TRUE or FALSE.

    BSS access

The BSS Access of an attribute indicates what access the OMC has to the attributeacross the OMCBSS interface. BSS attributes which can be accessed from the OMC

are crossreferenced with their OMC equivalents. Valid options for the BSS Access

    are:

    NOACCESS

The OMC cannot access this attribute at BSS level. This option applies to all OMClocal attributes.

    RW

The OMC has read and write access to the attribute at BSS level. The value can be

assigned by the OMC at any time.

    RC

The OMC has read and write access to the attribute at BSS level during the creation

of objects. After creation, the OMC has read only access at BSS level.

    Version 1.0

    RO

The OMC has read only access to the attribute at BSS level. The value cannot be

assigned at any time by the OMC.

    Valid range

The valid range specification depends on the attribute datatype. The range is specifed

for the valid datatypes as follows:

IntegerFor an integer attribute, the format is (range to range) which indicates one or more

sets of ranges. The format of each range can be one of the following:

(integer value or integer value or or integer value) which indicates that theattribute must be one of the listed values, for example:

    (0 or 1 or 2 or 4 or 6) indicates that the attribute may take the values 0, 1, 2, 4 or 6.

(integer value to integer value) which indicates a range from the first value to

the second value inclusive, for example:

(0 to 31) indicates that the attribute may take any value from 0 to 31 inclusive. (integer value to integer value or integer value) which indicates a range ofvalues from the first integer to the second integer inclusive or a single value outside

    that range, for example:

(0 to 15 or 255) indicates that the attribute may take any value from 0 to 15 inclusive,or the value 255. (integer value to integer value or integer value to integer value or or

integer value to integer value) which indicates that a number of ranges are possible.Within each range the values are from the first integer to the second integer inclusive,

for example:(0 to 124 or 512 to 885 or 975 to 1023) indicates that the attribute may take any value

    from 0 to 124 inclusive, 512 to 885 inclusive, or 975 to 1023 inclusive.

String (including time)For a string attribute the maximum number of characters are spelled out in full.

BooleanFor a Boolean attribute the format is always (0 or 1) which indicates that the attributemay take either the value 0 or 1.

GSM_IDFor a GSM_ID attribute the number of octets required is specified.

CONNECT, OID, OID_list, INT_list, OCTET_STRINGNo range information is applicable to these datatypes.
