Citroen C1A new Citroen C1 will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show next week. It
will be available in both three and five door hatchback body styles as well as
a version with a large folding sun roof. Designed to be a chic city car, the new
C1 will be available in eight exterior colours, Caldéra Black, Gallium Grey,
Carlinite Grey, Olive Brown, Lipizan White, Smalt Blue, Scarlet Red and Sunrise
Red and there is also the option of contrasting roof colours. The open top
version, called the Airscape, offers the choice of three colours for the fabric
roof, Sunrise Red, Grey or Black. The Airscape is offered with two or four
passenger doors.
Designed as a compact and attractive city car the new C1 is 3460 mm
long, 1620 mm wide and 1450 mm high. It has a turning circle of 4.8 metres.
The C1 combines style with versatility, with a luggage capacity of 0.196 cubic
metres when all seats are needed, expanding to 0.780 cubic metres when
only the two front seats are required. It has automatic air conditioning, heated
seats and on the two door model memory settings for the front seats.
In the modern idiom it comes with a variety of electronic gadgets like, a
7’’ Touch Drive Interface, grouping together all media functions (radio,
telephone, video player, on-board computer). Mirror Screen technology offers
advanced connectivity. This function allows the motorist to copy smart phone
content onto the 7’’ Touch Drive Interface for easy display and control. To do
this, a data exchange app must be installed on the smart phone, before being
plugged into the car’s USB port, compatibility permitting. Once installed, the
motorist can take full advantage of the complete range of smart phone apps
from the 7’’ Touch Drive Interface: navigation, telephone, address book, music,
web radio and any other useful driving compatible apps. A range of on-board
technology makes driving easier such as a reversing camera, which projects
images onto the 7” Touch Drive Interface, simplifying manoeuvres, such as
parking in tight spaces.
The New Citroën C1 is available with a choice of two of latest generation
petrol engines.
The e-VTi 68 Airdream engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox and
features Stop/Start technology. The VTi 68 engine is also available with the
clutchless ETG (Efficient Tronic Gearbox). Additionally the new Citroën C1 is
available with the new VTi 82 from the PureTech engine family. Built in France,
this 1.2 litre, 3-cylinder, 61 kW petrol engine uses innovative technologies
giving a Combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.3l/100 km (65 mpg) and
exhaust emissions of 99g/km. It also offers a 0-100 kph acceleration time of
11 seconds.
offer the fuel efficient new 1.5 litre EcoBoost (110 kW and 132 kW) petrol
engine and also will be offered equipped with the new 1.5 litre TDCi (70 kW
and 88 kW) diesel engine. The Focus will continue to be offered with the 1.0
litre EcoBoost petrol engine (74 kW and 93 kW), that last year was chosen
by a third of Focus customers. There will also be a new version of the 99
gm/km CO2 1.0 litre EcoBoost, the first non hybrid petrol family car in Europe
to offer sub 100 gm/km CO2 emissions. Depending on the engine fitted, there
will be a range of five and six speed manual transmissions, with six speed
automatics being added in 2015.
Volkswagen Golf GTEThe new Volkswagen Golf GTE is due to make its debut at the Geneva Motor
Show next Tuesday. The original Golf GTI was powered by a direct injection
turbocharged petrol engine. The range was later expanded with the Golf GTD,
which had a direct injection, turbocharged diesel engine. The Golf GTE is a
petrol electric hybrid. The petrol engine is a 1.4 litre turbocharged, direct
injection petrol engine with a power output of 110 kW. It is combined with
a 75 kW electric traction motor. Combined the two sources have a total torque
output of 350 Nm. Working together they give the GTE a theoretical range
of 932 km (580 miles). Working together they give the GTE a maximum speed
of 222 km (138 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 7.6 seconds. By EU
testing standards the Combined cycle fuel consumption is claimed to be 188
mph (1.5 lt/100 km), with exhaust emissions of 35 gm/km. Under electric
power alone the GTE has a range of 49 km (31 miles). Power is transmitted
through a six speed DSG gearbox. The 8.8 kw/h Lithium-ion battery can be
recharged in around three and a half hours from a plug-in domestic electricity
supply.Ford FocusThe new Ford Focus was introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
recently and will be exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show next week. The
original Focus was introduced in 1998 and since then world-wide sales have
exceeded twelve million. European market sales in the period account for
around 6.9 million units. With total sales of 300,000 in China in 2013, it is
also the best selling model in the world’s fastest growing market.
Ford engineers have delivered a more solid, responsive and connected
to the road feel by increasing the structural stiffness at the front, revising the
suspension geometry, increasing lateral stiffness of steering relevant
suspension bushes, retuning the shock absorbers and incorporating a new
Electronic Stability Programme. The new Focus will be the first in Europe to

specifications were to Activ standards. As
tested the car had a recommended retail
price, excluding delivery and associated
charges, of €25,995.
So why do I consider it to be an ideal
family car ? It has a somewhat higher
build than most family hatchbacks or
saloons, which has a number of
advantages. For parents with young
children its higher build makes it easier to
reach in to fasten young children into
their safety seats. For older people it is
easier to get in or out, while for people of
all ages its higher stance gives you a
better view of the road ahead and the
scenery all around.
It has a large luggage space, 0.430
cubic metres, when all five seats are in
use, which can be expanded to 1.684
cubic metres when only two seats are
needed. The test car had a Spacesaver
spare wheel, which is better than no
spare wheel at all, but is not really

road tax rating carries an annual charge,
at present rates, of €200. Servicing is
recommended every 15,000 km (10,000
miles) or at intervals of one year.
Inside the car was comfortable and
well equipped. The leather covered
steering wheel adjusts for both reach and
height and has a really high quality,
luxurious feel about it. It is geared to give
2.6 turns from lock to lock. The steering
itself is light and positive with a good feel

right. Above these two
smaller gauges, the digital
information panel shows
things like the outside air
temperature, the average
fuel consumption and
distance recorder.
In the top centre of the
facia, there is another
digital screen showing the
date and time. There is a
storage shelf just ahead of
this panel. Below the
storage shelf there is a
large panel mainly
associated with the audio
system and the various
electronic controls. Below
this three round dials are
connected to the heating
and ventilating system.
This panel also contains
two push buttons for the
windscreen and rear
window heating and
demisting.
The stalk on the left of
the steering column
operates the direction
indicators and acts as the
selector for dipped or
main headlamp beams.
The matching stalk on the
right operates the wipers
and washers. A panel on
the lower, right hand side
of the facia, below the air
vents has the switches for
the headlamps and
foglamps.
The car had four
electrically operated
windows, electrically
adjustable exterior rear
view mirrors, which fold in
automatically when the
ignition is switched off.
Information related to the
rear park assist, is
displayed in the central
screen at the top centre of
the facia.
Overall the excellent
layout makes the system
easy to see whilst driving
and easy to use. The only
difficulty I noticed, whilst
driving, was that the two
buttons for the windscreen
and rear window heating,
were hidden behind the
gearlever, when it was in
first or third gear, but
became visible again when
the lever was moved back
into 2nd, or 4th gears.
The two front seats are
comfortable and well
bolstered. The driver’s seat
adjusts for reach, height,
backrest angle and lumbar
support. The front
passenger seat adjusts for
reach and backrest angle.
The rear seat is divided
35-30-35 and the two
outer positions have ISOfix
fittings for child safety
seats. When extra luggage
space is needed, the
backrests fold onto the
seat cushion and the
whole unit can then be
moved into a vertical
position.
On the road the C-Max
rides and handles well. It is
just as much at home in
stop start city traffic as it is
travelling at the maximum

diesel powered the engine
is smooth and silent, yet it
has plenty of power when
needed for overtaking or
in the stop lights grand
prix. The steering is light
yet positive, so there is no
problem on twisting and
narrow roads. Indeed the
car is a pleasure to drive at
all times. The braking
system, using ventilated
discs at the front and plain
discs at the rear, includes
anti-lock, electronic
brakeforce distribution,
emergency brake assist,
plus an electronic stability
programme with traction
control and hill holder
assist.
Top speed is said to be
170 kph (105 mph), with 0-
100 kph acceleration in
13.3 seconds. Some boy
racers may suggest that
the acceleration is rather
lethargic. However, what
you have to remember, is
that this is a spacious,
versatile family car, not
some noisy, cramped, high
performance coupe.
By EU testing standards,
the Urban cycle fuel
consumption is 52 mpg
(5.4 lt/100 km), Extra urban

Peugeot will launch its new 108 at
the Geneva Motor Show in March.
The new 108 replaces the existing
107 model and will be offered in
three and five door hatchback body styles
as well as a soft top version. In the current
tradition of small city cars, the new 108 will
offer a huge range of exterior colours,
interior trims and other personalised items
like floor mats, key fobs and exterior rear
view mirror housings.
Power is provided by a range of efficient
three cylinder petrol engines. The most
interesting is perhaps the 50 kW e-VTI
engine, driving a 5 speed manual
transmission. It offers exhaust emissions of
just 88 gm/km. Next comes the 50 kW VTI
unit also linked to a five speed manual
transmission, with exhaust emissions of 95
gm/km. The same engine when fitted to
the five speed electronic gearbox has
emissions of 97 gm/km. All the above
engines have a capacity of 1.0 litre. There is
also a three cylinder 1.2 litre engine,
delivering 61 kW, driving through the five
speed manual transmission and giving

whichever engine you choose the car will
fall into Irish road tax band A2 with an
annual charge, at current rates, of 180 euro.
The soft top model offers customers the
choice of four colours for the folding fabric
top; Black, Grey, Red or Purple. The top is
electrically operated and can be opened to
a number of different positions.
Weighing just 840 kg the new 108 is
light and agile making it an ideal city car.
When all four seats are in use it offers 0.196
cubic meters of luggage space. However,
when the 50/50 rear seat is fully folded this
expands to a very generous 0.750 cubic
metres.
The car also has the latest electronic
gadgets like a seven inch touch screen with
MirrorLink technology which allows the
screen to become a mirror image of any
smart ‘phone using Android, Windows, RIM
or iOS technology.
Standard equipment includes two Isofix
fittings on the rear seat, anti-lock brakes,
with electronic brake force distribution, an
electronic stability programme with hill
start assist, an indirect tyre under inflation
system and six airbags.
The new 108 will go on sale later in the
summer of this year and price will be
announced closer to its introductory date.
