Tesla Turbine Scientific Instrumentation Facility Project

1.  Small working Tesla Turbine capable of reaching over 10k rpms with 80 lbs shop air.

2.  An original design, the outer plexi

casing made with 3-axis CNC, everything milled and lathed by hand.

3.  CAD using SolidWorks 2011 and

Photoview 360. 4.  Two compressed air inlets knurled,

tapped and welded to outer turbine body.

5.  Compression-fit high speed bearings

allowed smooth runner rotation.

Additionally… All six runners within the turbine were salvaged from old hard disc drives!

Automatic Plant Harvester Horizontal translation assembly

1.  Part of a larger machine designed to autonomously extract, cut and replace trays of vaccine-impregnated plants.

2.  Necessitated both concept and detailed

phases of mechanical design. 3.  CAD using SolidWorks 2011 and

Photoview 360. 4.  Developed sensing and control

overviews, operational safety guidelines and detailed machine drawings.

5.  Conceptualized, analyzed and

evaluated five different design concepts.

Pipe Grid Analysis Boston University Theater

1.  Spearheaded idea and effort, working closely with non-engineering professionals.

2.  Hand calculations supported by computer

simulations of bending stress within 1.5” schedule 40 pipe.

3.  Constructed shear & bending moment

diagrams. 4.  CAD and simulation analysis using

SolidWorks 2011. 5.  Made critical assumptions and clear

boundary conditions essential to accurate simulation.

6.  Presented and explained findings to BU’s

technical production team.

Additionally… 35 year-old pipe grid found to be a liability as an indirect consequence of this report, spurred preventative structural action taken by Boston University.

Autonomous Quadcopter Control Stabilization and Tracking

1.  Derived and linearized equations of motion for a quadcopter, a small aerial vehicle controlled by four propellers.

2.  Developed a MATLAB simulation for

attitude and spatial translation movements given individual rotor speeds.

3.  Designed a linear quadratic regulator

to achieve stability both at hover position and specific pitch and roll angles.

4.  Helped implement bang-bang control

for spatial driving requirements.

Additionally…Controller design focused on system robustness -- ability to reject noise and external disturbances. .

Auroral Imager Boston University Satellite Applications and Training

1.  Currently team leader for the development of an auroral imaging device to be used aboard a low-earth orbiting satellite.

2.  Purpose is to obtain spectral data of auroral

phenomenon in an effort to better understand the cause/effect relationship between high-energy particles and auroral light.

3.  Designed a signal to noise ratio calculation

tool for easy evaluation of a wide rand of CCD sensors considered for use within the imager.

4.  Unique design allows for modular

incorporation within the satellite’s mechanical structure, with all instruments occupying a 3U space.

Additionally…Satellite design is BU’s entry into a nation-wide nano-sat competition sponsored by the US Air Force.
