To determine the ignition type, perform the following test:1. Determine that the coil you are replacing is a twin tower coil. (These coils will not replace single tower coils).2. Using a volt meter or 12 volt test light, hook positive lead to position post and negative to ground on one of the stock coils.3. Turn on ignition but DO NOT engage the starter button.4. If there are 12 volts at the coil, the motorcycle has inductive type ignition. If there is no voltage at the coil then the motorcycle has a capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) because the power goes to the control box first.

WiththeModulewiredtothecoillikeit’sreadytorun.TakethecapoffandpositiontheModulesoyoucanseeit.Turnthekeyon,testvoltageonthenegativesideofthecoil,whichiswherethegreenwireattachestothecoil.

TodothistheRedleadfromthevoltmeterwillgototheGreenwireonthecoil.TheBlackwirefromthevoltmeterwillgotoground.Setthevoltmeterfor12voltsDC.

WiththeignitionswitchONyoushouldhaveabout12volts.Thentakeacardormatchbookandplaceitinslotofthemoduletoblockthephotoopticsofthemodule(seepictures).Thevoltageshoulddropto1-2volts.Rememberit’saninfraredLEDyouwon’tseeit.

If the test results are as follows the Module will need to be replaced: (a)Voltagedoesnotdropto1-2voltswhenopticsblocked. (b)Voltagealwaysstaysbelow2volts,blockedornot. (c)Voltageonlydropsabove2volts,thehigherabove2voltsthe

weakerthespark.

Possible causes are:

•Faultychargingsystem:stuckorshortedregulator,badground,deadcellordefectivebattery,defectivestatororgenerator.

•Faultyignitionswitch,directshortsinelectricalsystem. •Faultystartingsystem:starterdrag. •Tryingtostartmotorwithbatterychargerhookedup. •Non-suppressionsparkplugwires(copperorstainlesssolidcore

wires).SparkplugwiresmustbeSpiralCoreorGraphiteCoresuppressionwire.

•WeldingontheBikewithModulestillhookedup(unplugthewhiteconnectortotheModulebeforewelding).

•Impropercoil,use2-4ohmcoil(checkinstallationinstruction).

IfyoumustreplacetheModule,replaceitwithMalloryPart#A605.Ifaftercompletingthetestyoustillhavequestions216-658-6429.

Test Procedure for Unilite® & E-Spark® for Motorcycles

Trouble Shooting Guide-Charging SystemsCHECK THE STATOR: 1.Disconnecttheregulatorfromthestatorattheterminalinsidethecrankcase. 2.Checkforcontinuitybetweeneitherstatorpinandthecrankcase.Continuityindicatesthatthestatorisgroundedandneedstobereplaced. 3.Checktheresistancebetweenthestatorpins.Areadingof0.1to0.2ohmsshouldbepresent.Alowerreadingrequiresthatthestatorbereplaced.

CHECK THE OUTPUT: 1.Againdisconnecttheregulator,andconnectavoltmetersettoACvoltsacrossthestatorterminals.Withtheenginerunningat2000rpm,that

shouldbeareadingof32-40ACvolts.Theoutputwillincreaseordecrease16-20ACvoltsforevery1000rpm.

CHECK THE CURRENT DRAW: 1.Withallaccessories,ignition,andheadlamphighbeamturnedon,readthecurrentdraw. 2.Thecurrentdrawshouldbeatleast3.5AmpslowerthantheoutputlistedintheSPECIFICATIONSsectionoftheHarley-Davidsonservicemanual.

Youmayhavetoomanyaccessoriesdrawingpowerforthesystemtohandle. 3.HavetheBatteryLoadTested.

HOW DO I POLARIZE MY GENERATOR? 1.Ageneratorthatisnotpolarizedwillburnrelaypoints,causeadeadbattery,ordamagetothegenerator. 2.MomentarilytouchajumperwirebetweentheBATandGENterminalsonthegenerator.

All other ACCEL Motorcycle Products carry a 90 day Limited Warranty from defects in materials and workmanship.
