Trading things such as opium and cotton from India for tea from China

British were much more technologically advanced

time, they became successful and were the leading power in India- India is Britain's “Jewel of the Crown” , meaning its major supplier of raw

materials - Large population (300 million) were good marker for Britain's goods- Civil war made US cut off supplies production in Britain which made them

eager to produce from India- India became more useful after railroads were installed - able to transport

goods to inner ports of neighboring countries much easier and more efficiently- India developed their modern economy and brought unity to connected

regions which made them useful to Britain
