NATIONAL BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY FEBRUARY 7, 2013

20 August 2012 (Atlanta, GA – United States) Organizations of the XIII National Black

HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, February 7, 2013 (NBHAAD 2013) – a national HIV testing and treatment

community mobilization initiative targeted at Blacks in the United States and Diaspora – today

announced its theme, “Our ancestors fought that we might be free – even from HIV!” and 2013 National

Co-Chairs, Gloria Taylor, Founder/Executive Director – New Beginnings Health Foundation, Inc.and Warren A. Dates, Founder/Chief Executive Officer – The 6:52 Project Foundation, Inc. Since

February 7, 2013 falls on a Thursday, planners are expected to use the entire week to host events

and/or activities focused on HIV/AIDS education, testing, involvement, and treatment.

Years of HIV/AIDS education, testing, leadership mobilization, and encouraging those testing

HIV+ to enter treatment through this initiative has helped to stabilize the number of new HIV infections

per year among Blacks. However, while the number of new HIV infections per year may be down from

its peak in the late 1980s; Blacks continue to exceed the number of infections among whites since that

time.

“The resiliency of Black People is amazing, but we now have to move the pendulum towards a

Black AIDS Free Generation, and get those living with HIV/AIDS to adhere to their treatment regimen,

see their doctor regularly, and reduce and/or eliminate their exposure to other STDs which may

compromise the effectiveness of treatment.” says LaMont “Montee” Evans, Chief Executive Officer of

Healthy Black Communities, Inc. and the lead organization for NBHAAD.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010, the rate of new AIDS

diagnoses per 100,000 among Black adults/adolescents was about 10 times that of whites. The rate

for Black men (75.6) was the highest of any group, followed by Black women (33.7). HIV-related

deaths and HIV death rates are highest among Blacks. In 2009, Blacks accounted for 56% of deaths

due to HIV and Blacks’ survival time after an AIDS diagnosis is lower on average than it is for most

other racial/ethnic groups. It’s time to shift the gears and raise the stakes on where and how the

conversation about HIV/AIDS in Black America is shaped … and there’s no better time than February

7th! On this commemorative day, Blacks are encouraged to get educated, get tested, get involved, and

get treated around HIV/AIDS. Special events such as press conferences, town hall meetings, health

fairs, church services, community marches and rallies, candlelight vigils, and free HIV testing will be

held throughout the nation.

In its thirteenth year, NBHAAD organizers will be focusing on all cities where Blacks are

disproportionately impacted and the epidemic is not slowing. The top 10 states with the highest

number of Blacks estimated to be living with AIDS are New York, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, California, Texas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and the District of Columbia.

Black celebrities and community leaders have served as the face and voice of this huge effort

while encouraging thousands of Black communities to mobilize and do something that will be long-

lasting in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Past spokespersons include: President Barack H. Obama (during his time as Illinois Senator), Congressman Elijah E. Cummings; Tony Dungy; Idris Elba; Kimberly Elise; Lance Gross; Hill Harper; Taraji P. Henson; Tom Joyner; Congresswoman Barbara Lee; Ludacris; Master P; Tangi Miller; Patrik-Ian Polk; General Colin Powell; Sheryl Lee Ralph; Gloria Reuben; Romeo; Rev. Edwin Sanders; Tavis Smiley; and Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

NBHAAD is directed, planned and organized by a group known as the National Planning Council who partners with local, regional and national partners to mobilize communities and address

specific issues in regards to local epidemics. Healthy Black Communities, Inc. is a 501(c) international

nonprofit organization and has served as the lead for this initiative since 2006.
