•2 types of motivation• Intrinsic- I want to do this.•Extrinsic- Carrot and stick!

So what's better?

PUZZLE OF MOTIVATION-EXTRINSIC

• Rewards- Money?• Can this work?• For simple tasks yes!

• Found that it can result in negative results.

PUZZLE OF MOTIVATION

• Essentially if the task is simple- laying bricks. The simple reward like money improves performance.•Unless you pay them a reward that is too large! More money can actually reduce effectiveness.

NEGATIVE RESULTS FROM EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION

•Diminished • Lower performance• Less creativity•Unethical behavior• Short-term thinking

INTRINSIC MOTIVATION

• The candle Study!• What they Learned-• If the task is at all complex and pay is fair- Then

autonomy, mastery, and allowing for freedom leads to much better results.

PUZZLE OF MOTIVATION

• Business are doing it entirely wrong!!!

• Even though the science tells them what to do.

So if you know the motivation needed then you should use what works best!
