Motivation is a drive that encourages action or feeling. To motivate means to

encourage and inspire.

Motivation is like a fire unless you keep adding fuel to it, it dies. Your fuel is your

belief in your inner values

Theory X and Theory Y

Theory XThe employees belonging to theory x usually

have a negative attitude towards work

1) Employees dislike work and whenever possible will try to avoid it2) Since they dislike work , they must

be controlled, or threatened with punishment to achieve goals.

Theory Y

Employees belonging to this group have a positive attitude towards work

1) Employees will have self direction and self control if they are committed to

the work

2) Employees will learn to accept responsibility

Hierarchy of Needs Theory

The most well- know theory on motivation is Abraham Maslow’s

Hierarchy of needs. Maslow hypothesized that with in every

human being there exists a hierarchy of five needs.

1. Physiological- Hunger, Thirst, Shelter and other bodily needs

2. Safety- Security and Protection from physical and emotional harm

3. Social- Affection, Belongingness, Acceptance and friendship

4. Esteem- Internal esteem factors, such as self respect and achievement. External esteem factors such as status, recognition and attention.

5. Self- actualization- The drive to become what one is capable of becoming; includes

growth and achieving one’s potential.
