DISTANCE VS. DISPLACEMENT
distance – the total length traveled
displacement – the distance and direction of an object’s change in position

SPEED
speed – the distance an object travels per unit time
There are 3 types of speed: constant, average & instantaneous
![Page 9: Motion IPC NOTES. MOTION & POSITION motion – a change in an object’s position relative to a reference point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062301/5697bfad1a28abf838c9c16d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
SPEED
constant speed – speed that does not change over time
ex) driving with cruise control
![Page 10: Motion IPC NOTES. MOTION & POSITION motion – a change in an object’s position relative to a reference point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062301/5697bfad1a28abf838c9c16d/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
SPEED
average speed – the total distance traveled divided by the total time traveled
ex) average speed for a trip
![Page 11: Motion IPC NOTES. MOTION & POSITION motion – a change in an object’s position relative to a reference point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062301/5697bfad1a28abf838c9c16d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
SPEED
instantaneous speed – the speed at an exact moment
ex) the speed listed on a speeding ticket
![Page 12: Motion IPC NOTES. MOTION & POSITION motion – a change in an object’s position relative to a reference point](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062301/5697bfad1a28abf838c9c16d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
GRAPHING DISTANCE VS. TIME
Graphing distance vs. time shows velocity.
Time = independent variable = X-axis
Distance = dependent variable = Y-axis
