FROM THE PASTOR Angels Unaware

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without

knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2)

It was one of those busy Monday mornings; the first day after coming back from a few days off from Spring Break. In addition to having to wade through the stack of snail mail and hundreds of emails awaiting me on my

arrival, and phone messages to be returned, there was an unusual steady stream of folks coming to the office from the streets seeking some kind of assistance with utility payments, etc. It was almost constant. Diane mostly handled the requests, informing and consulting me as each new person came to the door.

My daughter Meghan stopped by the office. We were on our way out the door to go down the street for lunch when we came upon a middle-aged woman. She was coming back down the steps from the front 5th street entrance to the sanctuary. I asked her if I could help her. She said she was looking for the entrance into the church. I immediately assumed that she was another person seeking some kind of financial assistance. And I must confess, there was a part of me thinking, Please, not somebody else right now. But in my weakness, I was able to say graciously (hopefully) that if she went past the ramp up the next set of steps she would find a door marked office and someone would be glad to greet her.

When I came back from lunch, I met the same woman who was on her way out the door. I asked if Diane and Eleanor had been able to help her and she said, Oh, yes.

They ve been very kind. I spent a few moments in conversation with her before she left. When I asked Eleanor what the woman s need was, Eleanor said that she had just wanted to be able go into the sanctuary for a few minutes of quiet. Diane (who was now at lunch) had greeted her and led her to the sanctuary. As the woman began to leave, she had asked Eleanor if we had a Bible like the one in the pew where she had sat and prayed and meditated that she could purchase. Eleanor told her we didn t have any Bibles for sale but that we would gladly give her one.

Well, then, can I make a donation to the church? she asked.

Eleanor responded that it wasn t necessary but, yes, she could if she wanted. The woman took an offering envelope from a pew. After asking what was meant by General Fund, Building Fund, and Other, on the

envelope, she placed her gift inside the envelope and gave it to Eleanor.

Eleanor handed me the envelope and said, You re not going to believe this. I opened a rather thick offering envelope and counted out $1500 in cash.

I came away from that experience: 1. Thankful for the way our staff day-in and day-out greet our guests in a welcoming and hospitable manner; 2. Grateful for the opportunity Centenary has to be in ministry simply because of our location at the corner of 5th and Main; and 3. Humbled and reminded to remain obedient to our Lord s call to be in ministry to everyone as if it was Him (Matthew 25:31-46).

Ramp Building Update We currently have three applications and are

finalizing plans for these projects. On May 22 our goal is to construct all the ramp sections for later use at these homes.

If you have previously volunteered for this ministry, you will be receiving an email with more information. If you have changed your email address since last year please let me know, or if you wish to volunteer contact David Pratt at [email protected] or phone 633-4530 or Larry Crouch at 633-6534.

Men s Ministry The Men s Ministry has begun a new study, Wild at Heart, and books will be available in the church office. The Men s Ministry meets at 7:45 am the second and fourth Saturday of each month at Derek Robinette s house. Derek s phone number is 502-321-1302. During our previous study, Life s Healing Choices, over 12 men participated in the study. The men are also planning a fall retreat for 2010 so look for more information during the summer. Contact Derek if you have any questions about the men s group.

College-Age Connection Centenary College-Age Connection begins May 23. This ministry will consist of a Sunday School Class in the fellowship hall, a weekly Bible Study time (day TBA), and other scheduled activities. Other activities will be announced during the Sunday School Hour!

Property Evaluation Team The Property Evaluation Team that was

appointed by the Church Council has met twice. The team (chaired by Jim Coots and including Ted Igleheart, Steve Gregory, Donna Henshaw, Jeff Gaither, Bill Decker, David Pratt, and Pastor Mark) has redistributed the survey conducted by a team from 2003, as well as has received reports from individuals and our present ministry teams. With only a few minor differences, the information gathered is consistent with that gathered in 2003.

Without incurring the costs of detailed architectural drawings, the team is securing floor plan and elevation drawings on an initial plan that would take into consideration the feedback and input received. This will be presented at the June Church Council meeting for consideration of moving toward a capital campaign. Please keep this team and the process in your prayers.

Though there will be some building on previous lessons, you are invited to participate even if you cannot attend every night.

Frankfort District Conference The Frankfort District will conference

together on May 16, 3:00 p.m., at the Campbellsburg United Methodist Church. Our own Clyde Tharp as District Lay Leader and Superintendent Kenneth Cummings will be leading. There will also be a brief business time of adopting the District budget and hearing a preview of the upcoming June Annual Conference meeting in Covington. Though our Conference delegates and lay leader are especially invited, all are invited and encouraged to be a part of this. Pastor Mark will leave our church parking lot at 2:00 and is willing to take the church bus if enough express interest in attending.

You may have noticed some landscaping was completed recently with new bushes, flowers and lots of weed pulling. The Kohl's department store in Frankfort sent about 20 volunteers to Kids Korner 4/17 to do the yard work and plant flowers with the children. This was part of their "Kohl's Goes Green" program for Earth Day, which also included giving the Kids Korner program a $1,500 grant! The Kids Korner team would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kohl's Frankfort for their support and for this very generous grant. Over the past few years, Kohl's has given more than $5,000 in grants to Kids Korner. Thank you also to everyone that generously donated to Kids Korner and other programs at the Easter offering. Music

May is here and we are celebrating Mother s Day! On Sunday, May 9th, all of our children s choirs will be singing in both services. They will need to meet in the fellowship hall at 8:30 and 10:45 am in order to get ready. This will be the last time our children s choirs will sing in our worship services until the fall, so make sure to invite all your friends and family to come hear their beautiful voices!

I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who filled out the Worship Service Survey . On May 7th, we will be drawing a name for the Wal-Mart gift card. Your feedback and opinion is very important, so I encourage you to take a few minutes to answer the 10

simple questions. If you have any questions or need help with the survey, please contact the church office.

Our acolytes have been doing such a wonderful job leading us in worship over the last few months. As always, the acolyte schedule is posted for the month of May outside the choir room. If you are involved with the acolyte program, please take a look at the schedule and feel free to contact me if there are any issues or questions.

From the A/V Team to our communion preparers, there are a variety of ways you can use your unique gifts and interests to the Glory of God through the Worship Arts Department here at Centenary! See you in worship!

For His Kingdom, Matthew Kimmons, Director of Music Ministries

Youth

Summer is right around the corner and as always May is a very busy month for students! Here is a highlight of some of the upcoming activities that CYF has to offer:

Senior/Graduate Sunday On May 16th we will honor our CYF Seniors and celebrate their lives and accomplishments in both worship services. Come hear challenging messages from the youth as they reflect on their CYF experience and look forward to the next stage of their lives! The youth will be leading both the 8:48 and 11:00 services.

Confirmation Sunday On May 23rd we will celebrate the Confirmation of over 10 of our young people who will stand before the church and profess publicly their desire to follow after Christ through the United Methodist Church. The youth will be given Bibles to honor their decision to follow Christ. Please be sure to be present to celebrate this day with our youth.

Welcome New 6th Graders With the ending of a school year comes the welcoming of a new group of CYFers! We are so excited to welcome our new 6th

graders and we will be doing this on Sunday, June 6th at 6:00pm so be sure to mark your calendars. Present 5th

graders will receive a postcard in the mail with more information about the specifics of this day! Just be sure to mark your calendars!

Aldersgate Camp 2010 It is not too late to go to Aldersgate Camp this summer, but camps are filling up really fast! Brochures are available at the church and you can also check out camps online at www.aldersgatecamp.com. The best news is the church will pay half of the cost for church members and kids actively involved in CYF. If you are interested contact the church office 633-4510.

Dear CYF Kroger Card Users, Thanks to all those who use their CYF Kroger Cards. CYF received a check for $354.00 this month. All of this money goes to retreat grants and college scholarships for youth involved with CYF. If you do not have a CYF Kroger Card, please pick one up from Derek and simply load up your card before the cashier scans your items and 4% of whatever you spend will come directly back to the youth. We currently have close to $4000 in savings from this fundraising ministry. Thanks and keep using those cards!

Thank You Centenary & Kohl s

Kids Korner Goes Green

April s Kids Korner was a time of special celebration. The theme of the

day was Kids Korner Goes Green. Working in partnership with Kohl s

of Frankfort Kids Korner volunteers and children spent the day celebrating spring by planting flowers & shrubs in Centenary s flower beds; pulling weeds; clearing the remains of winter: dead plants, leaves, and trash to make way for the new plants. Volunteers from Kohl s and Centenary also helped the children plant a Marigold in the clay pot each child had decorated to take home and share with their family. Many of the kids said they were

taking their plants home to their mother.

The Going Green event

earned Kids Korner a $1,500 grant from Kohl s of Frankfort. Special thanks to Bonnie Maggard and her Kohl s team, Jane Bailey who helped direct the landscaping and Brenda Creamer

who joined Jane in selecting the plantings.

Also we thank all who donated to the special Easter Offering ($2315) that was designated to be split

between Kids Korner and the Needs Based Ministry for CUMC members.
