MAY 10, 2020 Mother’s Day
People have been discussing what the “new normal’ will be after our experience of COVID-19. As we move forward, out of our quarantine
at home, what from this pandemic will still be with us?
On a deeper level, there will be experiences or things that “hit us;” that have shined a light on how we want to live our lives from now
forward. I know people have found what they really value and enjoy in life during this time of pause, and they want to keep doing those
things. I know I have felt that as well, but it was good that people shared that with me.
On the other hand, COVID-19‘s effects might very well change the way we sanitize our lives from now on. Like, how will we dis-
tance ourselves in the future? Will we keep at a distance? Will we always be carrying a bottle of sanitizer with us or in our cars? Will
ZOOM become more of a standard practice for gatherings of people, such as family, parish meetings within our church commissions,
or at our places of employment? Will ZOOM just be another “tool” in the “toolbox”? To what extent will people use masks? Will people
go less to the checkout aisle and more to the “pickup” window or stations? Time will tell what sticks and what COVID lessons impact
us in the future. Time will tell what becomes the new normal.
I can tell you one thing that truly sticks, no matter whether we are in a pandemic or not—a mother’s love. I have been blessed and
I know all of you have been blessed with a mother’s love, either through your own mother, a guardian, a grandmother, or someone that
has been a motherly presence in your life. This weekend, as we celebrate Mother’s Day,
let’s celebrate that love that is unique, and well, OK, not normal but special, that en-
dures, nurtures us, supports us, and works to keep our family together physically, spir-
itually and emotionally. To honor mothers, we will have a blessing at our live-streamed
Masses. Please make sure that you “tune in” with your mother and make her feel loved,
appreciated, and especially blessed on this very special day we honor her. We’re even
having a Donut Sunday for Mother’s Day. Please drive through the back parking lot at
St. Cecilia and receive your donuts at 11:30AM this Sunday, till there are no more. And
as always, we will be honoring the Mother of God in a special way this month. There
will be a live-streamed May Crowning Service on May 20 at 7PM.
Amen? Amen!
Catholic Social Teaching: What is its History?Presented by Monsignor Frank Lane and live streamed from St. Cecilia each Tuesday evening at 7 PM on
the St. Cecilia YouTube channel for four consecutive Tuesdays beginning on May 12 and ending on June 2.
This series will seek to create a Scriptural context for the understanding of the responsibility of believ-
ers to worship God, look after each other and attend to the real needs of the people around them.
We will move from Scripture into the experience of the Church in the early days and its expansion
into a universal presence within the confines of the Old Roman Empire and, eventually, beyond. We will
follow the Church into the experience of the rise of cities and reemergence of trade and mercantile life
in the West. The series will conclude with an examination of the emergence of Capitalism into the 16th
Century and how ideas of social justice adapted to the newer challenges.

1 | PRIESTHOOD ORDINATION. Deacon Chris Komoroski, son of St. Cecilia parishioners Rich and Eva, will be ordained a priest next Saturday at the Cathedral. Deacon Chris will then celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving at 10 AM Sunday. We will of course be live-streaming the Mass on Sunday. If you would like to send a card, note or gift of congratulations, mail it to Fr. Chris Komoroski, 3600 Section Rd., Cincinnati, OH, 45237.
2 | ONE MORE YEAR. Barring the resignation or death of a pastor in the Archdiocese, we will have Fr. Jacob for another year. The decision was made this past Tuesday at the Priest Personnel Board Meeting. I and our parishioners in the region are very grateful that Fr. Jacob will be with us most likely until next June.
3 | CONGRATULATIONS. The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony was celebrated last Saturday afternoon at St. Cecilia, the 2nd of May. Please congratulate and lift up in prayer Mr. and Mrs. Riley and Katie Quinn. Though the wedding could only be attended by a few people because of COVID-19, a well-choreographed procession of family and friends, in their cars, paraded around the church expressing their joy for the couple by honking horns and holding up congratulatory signs as the couple looked on at the conclusion of the Mass from the front steps of the church.
4 | WELCOME, CHILD OF GOD. On the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, Joseph Pio, son of Jordan and Emily Adams was baptized. Deacon Nathan Biersdorfer presided. Please pray for Joseph and his family as he begins his life of grace in Jesus Christ.
5 | MASKS. Special thanks to all those that have made masks for us priests and seminarians. We all truly appreciate it. Pictured is one that was custom made for the priests of the region.
6 | REGISTERED FIRST FAMILY OF OHIO. My mom and sisters are very much into genealogy. Through their research, I came to know that my ancestors came to Ohio in 1817. My ancestors’ names were Edward and Mary McFadden. We later found out that if your ancestors came to Ohio before 1821 that you are recognized as one of the “First Families of Ohio.” After learning this, my mother encouraged our whole family to register ourselves with the Ohio Genealogical Society. Upon doing so, I received a certificate, a pin, and a number. There are over 4,000 registered people in the “First Family of Ohio.” Maybe you are one?

The Solemnity of Pentecost is the target date for parishes to allow the public back to the celebration of the Eucharist. I know we are all looking forward to that day. We will also hold a special Mass on the Vigil of Pentecost for those entering into full communion with the Church. As you know, our candidates for full communion have had to wait because we did not have the Easter sacraments available to them.

CATHOLIC FAQSWHY DO CATHOLIC’S MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS?You can identify the Catholics in a room by noticing those who make a gesture known as the Sign of the Cross before they pray. St. Francis de Sales explains:
“The Christian first lifts his hand towards his head while saying, ‘In the name of the Father,’ in order to show that the Father is the first person of the Blessed Trinity and the principal and origin of the others. Then, he moves his hand downward toward the stomach while saying, ‘and of the Son,’ in order to show that the Son proceeds from the Father, who sent Him here below into the Virgin’s womb. Finally, he pulls his hand across from the left shoulder to the right while saying, ‘and of the Holy Spirit,’ in order to show that the Holy Spirit, being the third person of the Blessed Trinity, proceeds from the Father and from the Son and is their bond of love and charity, and that it is by His grace that we enjoy the effects of the Passion.
When making the Sign of the Cross, therefore, we confess three great mysteries: the Trinity, the Passion, and the remission of sins” (St. Francis de Sales, The Sign of the Cross).
The Sign of the Cross has been used in prayer since the earliest days of the Church. Circa 386, St. Cyril of Jerusalem stated, “Be the cross our seal, made with boldness by our fingers on our brown and in everything; over the bread we eat and the cups we drink, in our comings and in our goings out; before our sleep, when we lie down and when we awake; when we are traveling, and when we are at rest” (The Works of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Vol. 2).
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by
believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26

Friends and Supporters of the St. Cecilia FestivalWe are obviously in the midst of a very surreal time. COVID-19 has temporarily changed our way of life and has altered the lives of
many around us. There are tough decisions that are being made every day by our government leaders, businesses and even locally at
our parish. As we pray that these changes are very temporary, we know that it will take time for life to come to what’s been called a
“new normal.”
St. Cecilia’s 2020 festival is still three months away. Traditionally this is a busy time of the year as our school children are starting
to sell Major Award tickets, donation/sponsorship letters are being mailed out and we are starting to collect items for our Bid-n-Buy
and soon the Flea Market. This year is obviously different. We are not able to ask our students to sell tickets and it is hard to ask a
business that is closed to donate or sponsor our festival. We also believe that even when restrictions are lifted a bit, it will take time
for people to feel comfortable in large group public settings again.
With these things in mind, a decision has been made to postpone the 2020 St. Cecilia festival. We are currently looking into
the possibility of having a festival-like event the weekend of the scheduled Oktoberfest in September and will keep the region
posted. Please know that this decision was one that was not taken lightly, but we know it is the right thing to do. The health of all
our parishioners and the entire community is our number one priority.
Thank you for all of your support! – The 2020 St. Cecilia Festival Committee

New Format for The Catholic Telegraph After 189 years as a newspaper, The Catholic Telegraph will
become a magazine beginning with the June 2020 issue. This
new format will better enable the CT to bring the goodness,
beauty and truth of the Catholic faith into the homes of Catho-
lics throughout our archdiocese.
The Catholic Telegraph was one of the first Catholic newspa-
pers in the United States, established in 1831 by the first bishop
of the then-diocese of Cincinnati, Bishop Edward Fenwick.
Interestingly, the Telegraph began in a time of another major
health crisis, the cholera pandemic. It has continued its mission
through times both good and bad. We are excited to launch this
next exciting phase of its mission!
Bringing the Faith Home With kids out of school and public Masses and religious educa-
tion classes temporarily suspended, parents may feel cut off or
overwhelmed with how to teach and share the beauty and joy
of the Catholic faith. To help with this, the staff of The Catho-
lic Telegraph has identified 7 fun resources to help parents and
children learn and live their faith at home. Find these at https://
bit.ly/CTFaithHome.
