From the President’s Desk—Dave Borchardt

A lot of our winter residents have left us for their cooler summer homes and we wish them safe travels and look forward to their return later this fall. May looks like another fairly busy month starting with our last resident meeting of the summer on May 4th, our annual Cinco De Mayo salsa contest (with free Margarita’s) on May 5th, a special breakfast put on by Bob & Karen Chapin on the 9th, our first ever Mother’s/Ladies Day on the 12th, the May pot luck on the 18th which is a Mexican theme and ending the month with our Memorial Day indoor bar-b-q on the 27th. Please be sure to sign up for these events and more importantly, please be sure to show up. Just a reminder we will not have resident meetings in June-July-August but will return on September 7th. To all the residents that have helped with various activities and events this past year I can’t thank you enough. We simply could not have done it without your help! Thank You !

LADIES OUT OF PARK LUNCHEON By Bea Goudeseune

B.J.'s Restaurant & Brew House was the ladies choice for April’s out of park luncheon .. I do believe all ladies who attended would give the food and service a 5 !! We would highly recom-mend it ... Remember, on the third Tuesday of each month we try a different restaurant and for May we will be dining at Nando's Mexican Cafe, 6715 E McDowell Rd, Mesa.. Meet at the Clubhouse at 10:45am and we can carpool .. The in park luncheon is the first Tuesday of the month, in the clubhouse at noon .. Enjoy this Spring weather!!

SOUP ‘N SALAD LUNCHEON FOR APRIL On April 2

nd at noon, the ladies of the Park met in the Clubhouse for their monthly luncheon “in”. We

had about 12 ladies who attended and brought several soups, many delicious desserts, and mouth-

watering salads. Several ladies brought extra bowls to take samples home of the delicious food pre-

pared. We also had a 50/50 raffle, giving half earned to the Activities Committee. The next soup

and salad luncheon will be held on May 7th and all ladies are invited to join – just sign up in the Club-

house and bring a dish to pass. We plan to continue these luncheons throughout the summer. It

gives us all a chance to relax and talk with people we have not seen in a while. We also have a la-

dies luncheon “out” and that will be held on May 21st. There is a sign up sheet for this as well and

we meet at 11 am in the clubhouse to be sure everyone has a ride. This month, we are going to

Nando’s. Come join us!

HOT DOG COOKOUT by Jane Boudreau

On Wednesday, April 10, 2019 the Actives Organization hosted a Hot Dog Cookout. The grills were again manned by our superb Grill Masters Wayne Miller and Bob Chapin. Bob was again turning our grilled onions to top the grilled dogs. In addition, chili, cheese and other condiments were available to dress the hot dogs. Side dishes were provided by residents and a variety of chips were available for the dinners to enjoy. We of-ten forget to thank our set up crew who ensure the tables and chairs are set up for our events. Thanks to all for a job well done, It is estimated 90 residents and guests attended the event. The signup sheets indicated 132 planned to at-tend. We noticed several residents signed up more than once for this event. We want everyone to signup however, doing so multiple time resulted in additional supplies being purchases. We do thank you for your enthusiasm. Following the dinner portion of the evening our DJ Dave Borchardt hosted a Karaoke session. The group who remained enjoyed the opportunity to sing and listen to others perform. For those of us who do not want to sing we enjoyed the talents of others, A Cinco de Mayo Salsa contest will be held on May 5th from 4 to 6. We will have a barbeque on Memorial

Day, May 27th at 5 pm. Please remember to bring your own beverage, Signup sheets will be available in the

clubhouse. Please sign up early which allow the board to purchase enough supplies for the cookout.

Celebration of Easter by Midge Drouin

On Easter Sunday our community here at Desert Harbor celebrated Easter Sunday Dinner at the clubhouse from 2:30pm until 4:30pm. There were 82 people signed up, but 70 showed up. Coleen Kitzman said grace before we ate. There were about 6 residents that helped with baking the hams. We had plenty of side dishes to pass--delicious salads, bread, potatoes, and fruit. The dessert table had plenty to offer also. We had plenty of ham for people to take home. The fifty/fifty table took in $140.00 so half was won by Bob Chapin who was the lucky recipient of $70.00. A thank you goes out to the host and hostesses for setting up and cleaning up and all the people who contributed to make this affair a success. Every-one seemed to have a great time. See you all at the next pot luck.

From Judy Childers and the older DH residents… Hey! New and old residents!! We are looking for more card players for Thursdays at 1 pm in the

coooool clubhouse! We play a form of Canasta called Ponytail. Come and learn the game. It’s

easy….you play with a partner …. And it’s a lot of fun……and it’s free!

Summary of April Residents Meeting

Dave Borchardt began our monthly meeting at 9:05am leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were about 72 residents present. He asked that the 50/50 be closed, and then welcomed Karen Kroschel to the Board, as the newest member at large. Dave then asked if there were any new residents and there were two – Rick and Jane Young in #9 from North Carolina. He then took roll call of the Board and all were present. The minutes, copies of which were on the tables, were approved as written. The treasurer’s report was also approved, as written. Under Officer’s Reports, Karen mentioned the Women’s Expo at Mesa and Main on April 27 and 28. We could ride the shuttle down to the Expo, buying tickets at the Circle K on Ironwood. More information on the sign-up sheet in the back. She also mentioned the Mother’s Day Brunch from 11 to 2 pm on Mother’s Day, it would be called “Ladies Day,” and the men with Karen’s help will cook the food. Carol Rysavy spoke on the book sale indicating that it was “super wonderful” this year, having a “free wheeling cost of the books.” Keep bringing your books and magazines to the Clubhouse. Tom Dike said he collected $28.55 for cans this month. Keep cleaning them before you recycle them. Howard spoke on the meeting of the Watch Group, saying they would have a meeting after the residents’ meet-ing – they are switching to “Day Watch.” Jane spoke on the money earned on the Fun Day, saying that $5,97l.14 was collected, $5,46l.30 after expenses. Dave thanked Jane and Bonnie for their excellent service. The Appreciation Party made $737.25 profit. From the front Office – they would like us to read a brochure if you have natural gas in your home. LeAna Pearson will be in charge of the decorations. The Guilty Pleasures Band was well received and we approved $600 to hire them next year for March 28, 2020. We cooked 140 hamburgers and hotdogs during the event this year. Dave asked if we would like to have Bernie and Red back next year – it was unanimous that we did NOT. We would like Tim Eggebraaten to return, but he is leaving singing for go-ing into “motivational speaking.” The new attendance drawing was drawn by Sherry Weinert, and she drew #16, who was not present. So next month it will be $50. Sign up for Pot Lucks, Cribbage, Ladies Luncheon Out, For bigger events we need a clean-up crew. Someone asked about the TV Paula was to purchase and Dave said it was here and Ernie was going to hook it up on Monday. The 50/50 raffle was 057955 and was held by Larry Heming, who received $69. At 1 pm today there will be a meeting with those hoping to build the car wash next to us. We adjourned at 9:45 am.

Respectfully submitted, Connie Riter

RESIDENT SHOWCASE by Connie Riter

We are starting a new column in the newsletter highlighting a resident who is crafty and who everyone should get to know. For our first issue, we are spotlighting Midge Drouin who lives in #203. Midge and her husband, Dave, have been married for 45 years and moved here from Connecticut 12 years ago. They have two daughters, Jamie and Jessica. They are going back to Connecticut this summer to visit friends as well as for Midge to learn more crafty work. What does she do besides teach tai chi, dancing (when asked to teach), chair yoga with light weights, and Zen tangle classes? She plays poker and cuts hair! But her greatest passion is creating new and different crafts. She has illustrated several Zen tangle books, designed greeting cards (although this is not her primary craft), and made coasters with Zen tangle designs and with fabric. She has also continued to make “natural jewelry” with baubles, beads, feathers, and jewelry stones she has purchased at sales. She has made many different Christmas ornaments, using corks, rings, jute, and ribbon. Midge has a collection of beautifully designed stones and gourds and her latest art is making dream catchers and decorating them with feathers which she makes of jute. “I have to keep busy,” she says. “That is why I am always trying to learn something new – and I am self-taught!” (If you know a resident you would like to be considered for a future article, please let a board member know.)
