Club’s “Member” Definition:With the pool set to open later this month and the golf course getting greener with each passing day, we wanted to take a moment to remind you what constitutes a “Member”. Outlined below is the Club’s definition of a Member. All others not meeting the criteria are considered a “Guest” and will be subject to a Guest Fee when using the Club’s amenities with the exception being dining with a Member here at the Club. Members are “Family”, defined as the Member’s current, legal spouse under Illinois law (or Significant Other) and their unmarried children who are under the age of twenty three (23), and who are living at home, attending school on a full-time basis or in the military. We appreciate your cooperation with adhering to our Guest policy. If you have a family/friend that is genuinely interested in membership here at HWCC, please contact me before inviting them out to experience the Club and we would be more than happy to extend a “Member for a Day” experience that would not involve you having to personally pay for their Guest Fee. Backyard Golf Range:We still have a few limited number of seasonal golf range passes available to Social Members. Contact Joe Titus for more information at 847.847.3258 or at [email protected]. We thank you for your continued support of Hawthorn Woods Country Club.

PRO’S CORNERThe season is underway albeit a late start. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that pace of play is vitally important to Club Health. We are all part of a large family here and with that comes shared common space. Please read two excerpts below from our past rules and etiquette meetings. • “Althoughdelayingotherplayersisoftenan indication of slow play, it is not the final test. Some, by nature, move more slowly than others, but a player whose normal pace is slightly slower than another may not be guilty of needless delaying actions.”They should, of course, let faster players through.

• Some become involved unavoidably in situations which require a bit of extra time (looking for lost balls). They may temporarily delay other players without being guilty of needless delaying actions. They should, of course, catch up quickly

Tournament Tee Policy – Many of you remember this policy from last year. Well, it has been amended…again. It’s very simple…

If your HANDICAP INDEX IS 19.0 OR HIGHER… you are eligible to play the Combo tees in sanctioned events. The list of applicable events is below. They may also be found posted in the locker rooms. • MemberGuestInvitational • KingoftheHillandPalmerCup*** • Shootouts • 9n’Dines • AdultChild • Sweeps • TheDraft • Men’sMember/Member • HawthornWoodsCup • Husband&Wife • FallClassic • 4Club

Turf NewsGolf NewsOn The Course With Scott Hillyard

What a difference a year makes! Spring of 2012 got off to a fast start with close to two weeks of record highs and golf beginning in early March. Spring of 2013, while much closer to normal, seems like it has taken forever to get going. Either way, we are playing golf now, and that makes everyone just a little happier.

April saw greens aerification (process yet undecided) come and go. And May will consist of continued cultural practices to improve plant and soil health and improve playability over the long term. You will see aerification processes on fairways, tees and approaches, topdressing of tees and approaches, and verticutting all taking place. While there are many benefits to these practices, the most important aspect is the removal and/or dilution of organic matter. Just like there are many benefits to aerification, there are several reasons to reduce organic matter accumulation. But as it pertains to you, too much organic matter leads to less than ideal playing conditions. This is a long term process to see sustained results, but well worth the effort in the end.

Additionally, May is traditionally a month of growth. During Spring, growth explodes both above and below the surface. Mowing kicks into high gear and we do everything we can to stay on top of it. But what you don’t see is the big strides made in root growth. This is a critical time to best prepare us for the stress that always comes with the warmer summer months. Root loss during the heat is a natural occurrence, and the deeper we push roots now dictates plant health later in the season.

Those are the things for me to worry about. What you need to worry about is getting the little white ball into the little white cup, S5086 a much more stressful task than I have to deal with. I hope to see full tee sheets everyday and a lot of new and old faces this season. I expect nothing less than great playing conditions in 2013 and I want you to share that with all your friends. Let’s have a great season!
