President Edee

Auxiliary Members, I hope you are all staying cool. July has been a brutally hot and humid month. I want to send a big thanks to all the people who volunteered or came to our Chicken BBQ and Corn Boil fundraising event. We don’t always get the sunny skies and 75 degree weather for these events but the patronage from everyone is AMAZING. We have started fundraising for handicap accessible restrooms in our building. This is no easy task. Rough estimates have been made and with a generous kickoff donation along with our Corn Boil, it looks like we are heading in the right direction.

Operation Badger Base is holding a 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. It will be held on the grounds

of the Harley Davidson-Madison and Ho-Chunk Gaming-Madison from August 11th-14th. I encourage everyone who is able to attend. It will have musical guests Madison County, Universal Sound, Maggie Mae, and much more. In the center of all the activities will be The Wall That Heals, a half scale replica of the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. You can find more information about this event at www.operationbadgerbase.com Lastly, I want to remind everyone of the Auxiliary meeting, August 16th at 6:30pm. We would love to see some new ideas and if you can, please bring canned goods for the Stoughton Food Pantry. THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

Aug. 1, 1941 – Parade magazine called it “…the Army’s most intriguing new gadget…a tiny truck which can do practically everything.” In just 49 days, Willy’s Truck Company was the first to successfully answer the Army’s call, and the new little truck was christened “the Jeep.” Aug. 1, 1943 – A Japanese destroyer rams an American PT (patrol torpedo) boat, No. 109, slicing it in two. The destruction is so massive other American PT boats in the area assume the crew is dead. Two crewmen were, in fact, killed, but 11 survived, including Lt. John F. Kennedy. Aug. 6, 1945 – Hiroshima, Japan, was struck with the uranium bomb, Little Boy, from the B-29 airplane, Enola Gay, piloted by Col. Paul Tibbets of the US Air Force along with 11 other men. The atom bomb killed an estimated 140,000 people in the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare. Aug. 6, 2011 – A US Chinook was shot down by the Taliban, resulting in 38 deaths (30 Americans and 8 Afghans), no survivors. Among the U.S. deaths were 17 Navy Seals. Aug 15, 1914 – The American-built waterway across the Isthmus of Panama, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, is inaugurated with the passage of the U.S. vessel Ancon, a cargo and passenger ship. Now known as The Panama Canal. Aug 18, 1920 – The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, is ratified by Tennessee, giving it the two-thirds majority of state ratification necessary to make it the law of the land. Aug 31, 1961 – A concrete wall replaced the barbed wire fence that separated East and West Germany, it would be called the Berlin Wall. - Ole

The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall is Coming to You

On Wednesday, August 10 the American Legion Riders will lead approximately 100 motorcycles in a procession bringing in the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall to the Ho-Chunk property on Millpond Road in Madison.

This escort is the beginning of Operation Badger Base, a celebration of service for all Wisconsin

veterans, being conducted by a wide range of veteran’s organizations that include the local American Legions, VFWs and many others.

The escort will begin in Janesville at 10:00 am, proceed up Hwy. 51 to Edgerton at 10:25 am, arrive in

Stoughton at 10:46 am, continue on Hwy. 51 thru McFarland at 11:05 am, and arrive at the Ho-Chunk property at approximately 11:15 am. Please allow 10 minutes or so before or after these times.

American Legion and VFW members along with townspeople are greatly encouraged to come out on the

street and cheer them on in support of this effort and the sanctity of The Wall. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Operation Badger Base-Volunteers Needed

Operation Badger Base has many volunteer opportunities available. This is a massive effort (similar to Brat Fest) which is a veteran themed event. There is a need about 40 volunteers between 10 am and 10 pm each day as beertenders (bartender licenses not required), parking attendants, beer and food ticket sellers, ID checkers among many other duties over the 4 day event.

There will be top notch entertainment in the evenings so there will also be a special need for

“beertenders” and other volunteers at that time.  Entertainment is free so it is expected to be very well attended.

This is also a great chance at recruitment as their will be many Vietnam Era veterans, as well as

younger OEF/OIF veterans in attendance.  The event will also feature a life size replica of “The Tomb of the Unknown”, which was unveiled in

Deforest on Memorial Day.  Four wreath placement ceremonies will be performed each day and also feature the “Changing of the Guard” twice daily, 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.

The organizers are asking for your help in making this event a rousing success for Madison, the

surrounding communities along with The American Legion, VFW and their ancillary organizations. For volunteer opportunities, contact Mary Lloyd at [email protected] or 608‐873‐5926.

(Need not be a Legionnaire or VFW member to volunteer.)  Contributed by Mary Lloyd, American Legion District Commander

SOME MILITARY TRIVIA

Although some military experts have an incredibly in-depth knowledge of the military, no one person can know everything there is to know. I have searched books and the Internet and have come up with 15 military facts I bet you didn’t know.

1. 30 of the 43 Presidents served in the Army, 24 during time of war, two earned the rank of 5-star General (Washington and Eisenhower) and one earned the Medal of Honor (T. Roosevelt)

2. Less than 28 percent of Americans between the ages of 17-23 are qualified for military service, that’s only about 1-in-4.

3. The U.S. Air Force was part of the Army until 1946. It was called the Army Air Corp.

4. Only one President (James Buchanan) served as an enlisted man in the military and did not go on to become an officer.

5. The Department of Defense employs about 1.8 million people on active duty. It is the largest employer in the United States, with more employees than Exxon, Mobil, Ford, General Motors, and GE combined!

6. The Department of Defense owns worldwide 29,819,492 acres of land worldwide.

7. The United States has 737 military installations overseas alone.

8. The Navy’s bell-bottom trousers, are commonly believed to be introduced in 1817 to permit men to roll them above the knee when washing down the decks and to make it easier to remove them in a hurry when forced to abandon ship or when washed overboard. In addition the trousers may be used as a life preserver by knotting the legs and swinging them over your head to fill the legs with air. (I knew that! - Ole)

9. The Coast Guard seizes 169 pounds of marijuana and 306 pounds of cocaine worth $9,589,000.00 every day.

10. The Coast Guard is smaller than the New York City Police Department.

11. The Marine Corps motto, "Semper Fidelis,” was adopted in 1883 as the official motto. It is Latin for Always Faithful.

12. The nickname “Leatherneck” originates from the stiff leather stock that early Marines wore around their necks, probably to protect their jugular vein against saber blows.

13. The English Bulldog, also known as "Teufel-hunden” or "Devil Dogs” is the unofficial mascot that symbolize the ethos of the Warrior Culture of the U.S. Marines. The U.S. Marine Corps earned this unofficial mascot during World War I, when many German reports called the attacking Marines "Teufel-hunden" meaning Devil-Dogs. “Teufel-hunden” were the vicious, wild and ferocious mountain dogs of German Bavarian folklore.

14. The U.S. Army was in charge of exploring and mapping America. The Lewis and Clark Expedition was an all Army affair. Army officers were the first Americans to see such landmarks as Pike's Peak and the Grand Canyon.

15. The Air Force's F-117 fighter uses aerodynamics discovered during research into how bumblebees fly.

So there they are, 15 facts you didn’t know, but now you do. Now you can amaze your friends and family with your knowledge of military trivia.
