TAKE THE BITE OUT OF SUMMER

Our 1st year (2003) of mosquitocontrol received rave reviews!

Clients enjoyed less swatting & moreof their yards this past summer, allwithout unpleasant odors or disrup-tion to daily activities.

Heightened concerns about West Nile Virus brought increasing requestsfor a mosquito control program. Inresponse, we developed a programwhich protects yards from adult mos-quitoes which transmit the West Nile virus andencephalitis as well as roundworm to pets. It’s diffi-cult to prevent mosquitoes from flying into your yardfrom surrounding areas, but we can effectively pro-tect against them “settling-in” and breeding. We’vetaken great care to select a material that suits ourlocal conditions and achieves effective control withthe least impact on human health and the environ-ment. The best way to suppress mosquito activity isthrough a Full Season 4-application program, but wealso offer a Basic 3-application program and SpecialEvent protection when needed.

DEMAND CS OFFERS OPTIMAL MOSQUITO CONTROLDemand CS, an encapsulated pyrethroid, acts simi-lar to pyrethrins, naturally-derived insecticides fromchrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethroids are specifical-ly selected for public health mosquito control pro-grams because they do not pose unreasonable risksto human health, wildlife, or the environment.

Demand CS’s encapsulated formulation providesfast and long-term activity during extended out-door exposure. It was engineered specifically for theshaded & humid surfaces upon which mosquitoesrest and provides quick, effective control of mosqui-toes that exhibit resistance to other materials

WHAT IS WEST NILE VIRUS / ENCEPHALITIS?West Nile encephalitis was detected for the 1st timein the U.S. in the New York City metropolitan area inlate summer of ‘99. The virus, which can cause thisencephalitis, is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, mainly Culex pipiens. Mosquitoes become infectedafter taking blood from an infected bird, the naturalhost of this virus. The infected mosquito can thentransmit the virus to humans and animals while ittakes blood from them.

All residents living in areas where West Nile virushas been detected can potentially become infectedwith the virus. However, only a small minority ofpeople who become infected will develop a seriouscase of encephalitis. Some people, however, are atgreater risk. People over 50 years of age are morelikely to become severely ill because of their weak-ening immune system. Anyone with a compromisedimmune system, regardless of age, is at risk.

Most people who are infected with the virus haveeither no symptoms or mild ones such as fever, headache, body aches, mild skin rash, or swollenlymph glands. A more severe infection, which may lead to encephalitis, includes, headache, high

fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, coma, neurologicaldamage, and paralysis, but rarely death.

HOW YOU CAN REDUCE BREEDINGSITES AROUND HOME & YARDThe number of mosquito breeding sites around thehome can be reduced by eliminating standing waterin which mosquitoes can breed. Dispose of anythingoutside that can collect or hold water, such as buck-ets or cans, and particularly tires. Clean & drainclogged roof gutters every year. Eliminate areas ofstanding water - do not allow water to stagnate inbirdbaths, ornamental pools, water gardens, andswimming pools and their covers. (Empty birdbaths

at least once a week.) Repair leaky outdoor faucetsthat leave puddles. Remember, during warm weath-er, mosquitoes can breed in any puddle of water.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BEING BITTENMake sure all openings of your house are tightlyscreened - “bug tight.” Stay indoors during periodsof high mosquito activity at dawn, dusk, and earlyevening. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants ifyou go outdoors at those times. Insect repellentscontaining 30% DEET (diethyl-m-toluamide), whenapplied sparingly to exposed skin and thin cloth-ing, can deter mosquitoes from biting. (Vitamin Band “ultrasonic” devices have not been proven effec-tive in preventing mosquito bites.)
