Introduction - Mortice LocksThe UNION name has been synonymous with mortice locks since 1840. Today, UNION produce a widerange of products suitable for both architectural specification and residential use.

Features and FunctionsThe following diagram gives an overview of the main features and functions of a UNION mortice. For afull explanation of terminology, please refer to the glossary on page 0.10 in the introduction at the front ofthe catalogue.

Rebate ComponentsOn rebated door frames, a rebate set will be

required to align the frame of the doorand secure the lock case.

Handing of LocksA hinged door opens in one of four ways.

Some UNION mortice locks will need you tospecify which handing you require on order.For details on handing, please refer to the

Sizing a Lock - Basic TerminologyTo help you select the correct mortice lock, the following is a basic guide to the key measurements anddimensions.

There are three main dimensions that apply to both lever operated locks and cylinder lock cases:

Case SizeThe distance from the frontof the outer forend to the

back of the case

BacksetDistance from the outerforend to centre of the

follower or keyhole.

The measurement isimportant when replacing

existing locks.

CentresDistance between the

centre of follower and thecentre of the keyhole.
