Morrissey Declares...

True, many, many folks in the past have seriously questioned the mental stability and fashion sense of HoH president Bob Morrissey. And, at first glance, his latest announcement (that it’s “Christmas in July”) truly seems like complete validation for such concerns. As we’ve been hearing, the HoH chapter version of the Society’s Barberpole Cat program is now ready to launch. Learning these twelve esatablished tunes is a great way to enrich your barbershop life and makes it possible to sing with all other barbershoppers in the world, any time you happen to run into them. We’re being given the chance to work on these songs, one-at-a-time, starting this week (July 18). You can download the music and learning tracks to any (or all) of them inside the HoH members area. Visit the Repertoire Music Library and select “Barberpole Cats”. Then plan to meet fellow polecat-ers at our rehearsal hall at 6PM on Tuesday for your first dose of this particular kind of barbershop fun. July’s song (first of the 12 polecats we’ll work on) is: MY WILD IRISH ROSE Hoping to see you all at the first polecat session, “Your fellow barberpole cats” ( P.S. Coming in August: DOWN OUR WAY )

A follow up on Christmas in July (from the front page) - Every HoH member who is planning to sing with us on the Christmas risers this year should start reviewing and learning the Christmas songs found within the members area of the Heralds website. Besides the holiday standards, you’ll also find a brand new Christmas song which we will begin working with this coming Tuesday (July 18). (What is it? Top secret… but the title has the word “GRANDMA” in it!)

The Heralds, once

TAMPA HERALD cub reporter, Lou Wurmnest, is back fresh from International.

He files the following story:

While perusing the Convention Program at the International Contest in Indianapolis, I noticed a 'Robert Lang' listed

in the new 50 Year Member listing. And guess what? It is the very same

Robert Lang that is a member of the Heralds of Harmony! All of that training for the Olympics

back who knows when (Jim Thorpe's name comes up from time to time) has kept him in great

shape and good vocal condition.

The Heralds of Harmony congratulate Mr. Bob Lang -- 50 Barbershop Harmony Society Member!

Anniversary Show

coming in November Our brothers in song, THE HERNANDO HARMONIZERS, will be celebrating their fifth anniversary on November 11 with a great show at the Nativity Lutheran Church, 6363 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee, Florida. This is on U.S. Route 19, 1.3 miles north of Route 50 (Cortez Boulevard) on the west side of the highway. Show time is 2:00PM For more show details, contact Jay Gettig (352) 684-9193 or [email protected] Hernando Harmonizers website: http://pages.zdnet.com/hernandocounty/index.html

Just so you know… The Heralds now appear on the website of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County (ACHC). This great organization is one of our chorus sponsors and their site provides info about many groups and events around the Tampa Bay area. On their site, visit the “CULTURAL GROUPS” list to find the Heralds, and the “EVENT CALANDER” to see HoH concerts included. ACHC site: http://www.tampaarts.com/default.aspx

Here are this week’s “longtimers”

19 Years - Lynn Hineman 25 Years - Don Messler 39 Years - Bill Billings 43 Years - Bob Thames

See the St. Pete Times this week? Monday’s edition included a story about 18-year old

leukemia patient Amanda Genovese, who celebrated

her birthday and recent graduation with a roaring

twenties party in “Great Gatsby” style. The event, held

at Clearwater’s historic Bellevue Biltmore Resort on

Saturday, July 15, was provided and hosted by the

Children’s Dream Fund.

What does this have to do with the Heralds?

Well, the article records that a portiont of the evening

entertainment, and gift to Amanda, was an hour of

barbershop music, presented in period costume, by

HoH’s very own “Songfellows”.

Just another example of how our wonderful hobby is

touching the hearts of some very special people.

OUR NEXT REHEARSAL

Tuesday, July 11 - 7p.m.

AND our weekly afterglow

at

Rehearsal guests on June 27

Marty Vandenburgh friend of Paul Carter

(P.S.—Marty went through HoH voice placement on Tuesday!)

Why the 4th? New Englanders had been fighting Britain since April 1775. The very first motion in the Continental Congress for independence was made on June 8. After hard debate, the Congress voted unanimously (12-0), but secretly, for independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain on July 2. The Congress reworked the text of the Declaration until a little after eleven o'clock, July 4th, when thirteen colonies voted for adoption and released an unsigned copy to the printers. (New York abstained from both votes.) Philadelphia celebrated the Declaration with public readings and bonfires on July 8. Not until August 2 would a fair printing be signed by the members of the Congress, but even that was kept secret to protect all the members from British reprisal. John Adams wrote his wife on July 3:

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

Adams was off by two days, however. Certainly, the vote on July 2 was the decisive act. But July 4 is the date on the Declaration itself. Jefferson's stirring prose, as edited by the Congress, was first adopted by the vote of the 4th. It was also the first day Philadelphians heard the official news of independence from the Continental Congress.

A Harmony Foundation Update:

Congratulations to Bill and Cathie Billings and John and Lauren Pennington, the Sunshine District's newest President's Council members. The 14 Tampa

Chapter members of the President's Council continue to lead the District in support of the Barbershop Harmony Society program through the Harmony

Foundation's philanthropic endeavors.

Chordially, Jack Brueckman

AND…a giant “GOOD LUCK” to our very own favorite four, LAST CALL. We know you’ll do us proud, guys!

The newest edition to the HoH roster is Mr. Phil Stern.

He has been around the risers for a few months and has now officially

taken up membership with us. Phil (better known as the

“rubber band man”) has already jumped in to help us with the singing

technique of “tension and release” . Welcome to the Heralds, Phil!

Here’s a sample of the THANK YOU NOTES received by the Heralds from some of the young

men we helped attend the recent Sunshine District Harmony Explosion camp for young

singers. It sure does your heart good!

Well, they’ve all been guest performers at the Sunshine District's Annual Labor Day Jamboree! Song, Sun and Sevenths - September 1-4, 2006 July is practically over and September will be here before you know it. Forget about hurricanes and gas prices. You need some great Barbershop unwinding time so get ready to pamper yourself and your family at the Westin Resort at Innisbrook. What is the Labor Day Jamboree, you ask? Well, it's all about tradition, relaxation, and Barbershop on the last long weekend of summer. The HoH BarberPole Cat program ... .. continues with more and more participants. Each Tuesday the guys gather to work on a handful of the old BBS standards.

The first half of the society’s official polecat list is the current project. Sheet music and learning tracks are on the Herald's website. Print off a copy and join

the guys as Phil Stern leads the process of Polecat Qualification (singing your own part correctly in a quartet from

memory). Here’s the current polecat list: My Wild Irish Rose Down Our Way Wait 'Till The Sun Shines Nellie Sweet

And Lovely Honey - Little 'Lize Medley Let Me Call You Sweetheart

PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW -

The Heralds have been invited back to the First Christian Church of Largo for a repeat performance, February 18, 2007.

Last year’s show there was a huge

success with a full house and delighted fans. No doubt ‘O7 will be the same!

The latest financial report for the chorus is now on line for your personal perusal. (That means, you are able to look at it.)

Active Heralds can find it inside the members area of our site. Look in the Chapter BOD archive section. It’s labeled as

“hoh financial report 07-06” Please direct any questions or comments re: the report (as well as any large

monetary donations) to HoH Treasurer, Al Kelly.

Also available inside the Heralds site members area is the brand new Christmas show flyer. Designed and produced by Steve Matheson and the HoH publicity team, it’s an excellent tool for us to use in promoting the wonderful holiday performances at TBPAC on December 2. Plenty of hard copies will be soon available for the taking at upcoming rehearsals, but you can download a copy right now. Go to the members area CHAPTER DOCUMENTS section to find the flyer.

There he is - RUSS POWELL

Being recognized for faithful and tireless efforts on behalf of the Heralds - - especially re: the huge job of Heralds show ticket management. He humbly gives much of the credit for winning the latest BARBERSHOPPER OF THE MONTH award to his wizardly mentor and all-around nice guy, Don Long. The way Russ tells it, Don has taught him everything he knows. (Uhh…. Who’s the “he” and who’s the “him” ?

From the “MAN, I WISH I’D SAID THAT” files ... 1) When I die, I want to go like my grandfather--who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." --Author Unknown 2) Advice for the day: If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle: "Take two aspirin" and "Keep away from children." --Author Unknown 3) "Oh, you hate your job? Why didn't you say so? There's a support group for that. It's called EVERYBODY, and they meet at the bar." --Drew Carey 4) "The problem with the designated driver program, it's not a desirable job, but if you ever get sucked into doing it, have fun with it. At the end of the night, drop them off at the wrong house." --Jeff Foxworthy 5) "If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there is a man on base." --Dave Barry 6) "Relationships are hard. It's like a full time job, and we should treat it like one. If your boyfriend or girlfriend wants to leave you, they should give you two weeks' notice. There should be severance pay, the day before they leave you, they should have to find you a temp." --Bob Ettinger 7) "My Mom said she learned how to swim when someone took her out in the lake and threw her off the boat. I said, 'Mom, they weren't trying to teach you how to swim.'" --Paula Poundstone 8) "A study in the Washington Post says that women have better verbal skills than men. I just want to say to the authors of that study: "Duh" — Conan O'Brien 9) "Why does Sea World have a seafood restaurant?? I'm halfway through my fish burger and I realize, Oh my God.... I could be eating a slow learner." --Lynda Montgomery 10) "I think that's how Chicago got started. THE BACK PAGE For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all the conflicting medical studies:

1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. Germans consume a lot of beer and sausage and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Barberpole Cat program Very soon, the Heralds will introduce the Barberpole Cat program. It’s a simple way to learn a handful of barbershop standards that will make it possible for you to sing a song with ANY other barbershopper in the world. If you would like to read more about it, here’s the link to the society web page where you can discover additional information about the Barberpole Cat program: http://www.barbershop.org/web/groups/public/documents/pages/pub_id_047338.hcsp#P-7_0

(Also, active HoH singers can find Barberpole Cat resources at our website. Go to the members area and visit the Repertoire Music Library. Take a look under “Babershop Standards”)

GROANER OF THE WEEK (maybe the month) - A man goes to the doctor. He says, "Doc, you gotta check my leg. Something's wrong. Just put your ear up to my thigh, you'll hear it!" The doctor cautiously placed his ear to the man's thigh only to hear, "Gimme 20 bucks, I really need 20 bucks." "I've never seen or heard anything like this before, how long has this been going on." The doctor asked. "That's nothing Doc. Put your ear to my knee." The doctor put his ear to the man's knee and heard it say, "Man, I really need 10 dollars, just lend me 10 bucks!!" "Sir, I really don't know what to tell you. I've never seen anything like this." The doctor was dumbfounded. "Wait Doc, that's not all of it. There's more, just put your ear up to my ankle," the man urged him. The doctor did as the man said and was blown away to hear his ankle plead, "Please, I just need 5 dollars. Lend me 5 buck please if you will." “I have no idea what to tell you," the doctor said. "There's nothing about it in my books," he said as he frantically searched all his medical reference books. "I can make a well educated guess though. Based on life and all my previous experience I can tell you that your leg seems to be broke in three places." ( HEY, WE WARNED YOU! )

MAX Q’s NEWEST CD SET “For the Children” This newly released 2-disk set is making big barbershop news all across the society! Chris Kirkman (Tony DeRosa’s sister) will be at Tuesday’s rehearsal with a supply of these new recordings. Remember, a portion of each $25 sale willl go to support the wonderful work of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. They make great gifts for any barbershopper, his wife, kids or grandkids! Make plans to get your copy this week. http://www.maxquartet.com/
