Dear Parish Family, Christ Episcopal Church “gathers in love to experience the transforming light of Christ, which inspires and gives us courage to illuminate the world”. So begins the dream of our Strategic Plan 2013-2018. How well are we liv-ing into that lovely dream? Each of us might answer that question different-ly. Part of the work in front of us in the coming year is to evaluate that vi-sion and put legs on it in terms of goals for our next few years. What is our focus? How do we build toward the future toward which God calls us? Your vestry invites you to join them on the journey. Christ Church is blessed to have gifted leaders in many corners of its community. They in-clude our new Senior Warden, John Gordnier, and our returning Junior Warden, Stan Strike, as well as a strong group of new vestry members: Abi Hu, Peggy Rohrbach, Ryan Cowger and the Rev. Douglas Sunderland. Please join me in welcoming our new vestry members. Please join me also in expressing thanks to outgoing Senior Warden, Wardi Reber, and outgoing ves-try members, Char McCue, Kate Murphy and Marshall Dominick. What place is God calling you to occupy in our journey to love one another, experience Christ together and share Christ’s light with world all around? I wonder…. Peace, Mary

Ash Wednesday, February 14th Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes

10:00 am and 7:00 pm The doors of Lent open Ash Wednesday, as we pray that God will make in us “new and contrite hearts”. Lent is a time for the examination and improvement of our hearts for it is from the heart that love comes, and who we love and how we love and what we love makes us who we are.

We begin the examination of heart with the ashes. The ceremony is simple, business-like, and unpretentious. Of all symbols of humanity, the ashes are the most ancient – and in their simplicity, most eloquent. They sym-bolize the worthlessness of what remains after fire has consumed a substance. And, by doing so, they remind us of the worth of all our human achievements after they are subjected to the fire of God’s judgment. “The smudge of ashes on the brow. The charge, ‘Remember, man that thou Art dust and shalt to dust return –‘ These are the words, the dictum stern Of God, relayed in rite The ages down to hearts contrite, Remember then, O Ichabod, That dust thou art, gold dust for God.” - Francis Lightbourn

Food 4 Kids

Update

We have gone back to purchasing items locally through Albertsons. Though the Food Bank of the Rockies food bags were much cheaper, the quality and quantity were not what we expected. We have cut some costs, and are working with a local nutritionist to help get some healthy options at a reduced rate. Thank you to all of you who have donated in the past!

Blankets for Babies Baby Blanket Ministry for Park County Public Health

Blankets for Babies had a very productive sewing day in January. We delivered two dozen blankets to the public health nurses, and filled the crate with kits for pa-rishioners to help make more. A generous donor provided two brand new sewing machines that work like a charm, and made the task much more en-joyable. We will have another sewing day on March 10 – so mark your calendars! All are welcome, even if you don’t sew!

A Deacon’s Journey Shrove Tuesday Pancake Feast – A Chance to Support Deacon’s Ministries February 13 5:30-7:00 p.m. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. The name Shrove comes from the old Middle English word “Shriven” meaning to go to con-fession and say sorry for the wrong things you’ve done. Lent always starts on a Wednesday, so people went to confession on the day before. This became known as Shriven Tuesday and then Shrove Tuesday.

The other name for this day, Pancake Day, comes from the old English custom of using up all the fat-tening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. The fatten-ing ingredients that most people had in their houses in those days were eggs and milk. A very simple recipe to use up those ingredients was to combine them with some flour and make pancakes! One way to celebrate this day at Christ Church this year is to attend the pancake supper in the Parish Hall. There is no cost to attend, however, there will be opportunities to donate to Blankets for Babies or Food 4 Kids and support these ministries of the church. Please come, stuff yourselves with pan-cakes, and stuff the donation jars, too! If you are able to help flip pancakes, set up, or clean up, please contact any of the Galagans (Mike, Heidi, or Chris) and we will gladly put you to work! Thank you! Rev. Chris Galagan, Deacon

A Festival of (Aco)lytes In the first-ever Big Horn Basin gathering of its kind, a dozen young people came together in Cody on January 13-14 to learn about and celebrate the Ministry of Acolytes. Christ Church’s Rector, the Rev. Mary Caucutt, and the par-ish acolyte wrangler and verger, Paul Fees, led the workshop for a mingling of both experienced and aspiring acolytes. Beginning Saturday morning, seven boys and five girls engaged in a mix of instruction, games, and practice, learning the skills and the history of their roles in the service. They took turns with the candle lighter and other tools, and they began digging into the Book of Common Prayer as their “manual” of both theory and procedure, their sourcebook and guide to the liturgy. Wardi Reber of the Christ Church Altar Guild instructed the group in the special ways of “setting the table” for Sunday’s Eucharist. After discussing the importance of “comportment” in carrying out the acolytes’ theological imperative – “that in all things God may be glorified” – they divided into teams to put on outrageously funny skits showing what NOT to do. Parents Joy Williams and Joanne Patterson helped ferry the group to Thomas the Apostle Center in time to go hiking before dark. Hosts Jay and Connie Moody enlisted the help of the kids in making individu-al pizzas for supper. After a good night’s sleep and a big breakfast, everyone returned to the church, vested, and assembled in the historic Poker Church for a presentation by Father Warren Murphy about the history of the Episcopal Church in the Big Horn Basin. The acolytes, robed in red, led the procession at the 10:00 service and filled the first two rows. Cele-brant Mary Caucutt conducted the brief and moving rite commissioning the new acolytes, and she highlight-ed the presentation to them of their own copies of the Book of Common Prayer. Following fellowship after the service, the group walked with Paul Fees to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West for lunch and a tour. The museum not only gave free admission to the group, it arranged for them to see the “raptor show” – a golden eagle and a turkey vulture – before it was time to go. And was it worthwhile? One parent, commenting on the pageantry of the procession and commissioning, said “the cere-mony was really cool. It was great seeing all of them up there, together, participating as a group.” Should the church sponsor a gathering next year? One of the acolytes, echoing the group’s sentiment, said “I will definitely go again next time.”

Sunday Mornings at 9:00 January 7 – March 11

The Gospel of Mark is our Sunday companion through 2018. The Christ Church Formation Committee is offering a Sunday Morning

Adult Formation Class to deepen our understanding of this Gospel. Written around the year 70 CE during a turbulent time of persecution, Mark conveys a sense of urgency, challenging Christians to remain steadfast in their radical commitment to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Today we don’t face the possibility of persecution, as did the Christians to whom Mark was writing. Nevertheless, we do live in a time when many social, political, economic, and religious forces are at work, subtly tempting us to ignore our commitment to walk in the way of Christ. This study of Mark comes to us from John Lewis and Jane Patterson. It is designed to encourage conversation in a weekly small group. We hope this ten-session wintertime Sunday morning study will encourage us to live more fully into our baptismal identity as members of the household of God: confessing the faith of Christ crucified; proclaiming his resurrection; and sharing in his eternal priesthood (Book of Common Prayer, p. 308). Our study only requires a Bible and a heart open to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Please join our winter, Sunday morning study! Session V: Is there Enough? February 4, 2018 Session VI: Taming Chaos February 11, 2018 Session VII: The Cost of the Cross February 18, 2018 Session VIII: Seeing Clearly February 25, 2018 Session IX: Radical Offering March 4, 2018 Session X: He is Going ahead of You March 11, 2018

Lay Eucharistic Visitor Upcoming Gathering and Training

Saturday, February 24th 9:00 am – 10:30 am Receiving communion during our church service is a deeply spiritual experience. Sharing this very special inner peace with our church family members who are unable to attend is important. The Lay Eucharistic Visitors' commission is to take the prayers and loving thoughts of the congregation as we deliver the sacrament of Christ's body and blood. Our celebrant completes the communion service each time we are to visit a shut-in with the blessing "we who are many are one body, because we all share one bread and one cup; may those who receive it be strengthened and encouraged". We would like to invite you to become part of this ministry. Lay Eucharistic Visitors are licensed lay ministers of the Episcopal Church. Training is necessary. If you are interested in becoming involved in this ministry, we are hosting a training gathering in the rector’s office on Saturday morning, February 24th at 9:00. Please call the church office to RSVP for this gathering. Ongoing experienced Lay Eucharistic Visitors are invited to join in for a refresher and to share their experience and insight. You will find that even you are offering loving service to those you visit, the rewards of being the "visitor"

HELP NEEDED Absaroka Assisted Living is looking for anyone at the Episcopal Church who may be interested in helping the Resident Activities department with fun, tasteful crafts that our residents are able to appreciate and do? Suicide Prevention at Christ Church Sponsors Crisis Intervention Team Training for Law Enforcement

At NWC in Powell, March 12-16, 2018

Christ Church Vestry requested a suicide prevention grant from the Founda-tion for the Diocese of Wyoming to sponsor a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Train-ing for local law enforcement. The CIT Training is a 40-hour course of instruction completed within a one-week period. CIT Training is law enforcement training for experienced sworn law enforcement officers. CIT Training helps law enforcement as they interact with individuals who experience mental health problems, which can

be one of the most challenging aspects of law enforcement work. The training focuses on recognition of mental health problems, de-escalation techniques and tactical considerations for interacting with people experiencing a mental health problem. The March Park County Training is based on the Memphis Model, and has been tailored to meet the needs and interests of law enforcement agencies in Wyoming. Topics covered include: Signs of Men-tal Illness, Suicide, Mental Health issues for Children, Youth, and Adolescence, Cognitive Disorders, PTSD, Anxiety Disorders, Psychopharmacology, Assessment and Commitment, Community, De-escalation Training, Site Visits, Officer Tactics and Safety, Officer Stress Management and Health. This training is coordinated by Kelly Eckerdt and supported by the Powell and Cody Police Departments and the Park County Sheriff’s Office. Christ Church is grateful to the Foundation for its support and asks that members of Christ Church keep this im-portant training in their prayers.

Morningstar Parish Nurse

Parish Nurse Influenza Anyone?

NO! You do not want to come down with the flu. The influenza virus is one that mutates readily and rapidly. That’s the reason we all need annual flu shots. The scientists who decide which strains need to go in any giv-en year do the absolute best they can at figuring out which ones are needed. Smart people all over the world are also working on a "Universal" flu vaccine! One shot and you're done. Stay tuned. Getting vaccinated against the flu will increase your chances of staying healthy. There is still plenty of vaccine left. And the CDC guidelines recommend ALL people 6 months old and older get vaccinated on an annual basis for influenza. Now, a little about “the flu”. What it is NOT is a tummy upset. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea with or without a fever is not flu. There really is no such thing as “the stomach flu.” Flu is a respiratory illness. These are the symptoms: Fever or feeling feverish/chills. Cough. Sore throat. Runny or stuffy nose. Muscle or body aches. Headaches. Fatigue (tiredness) Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. If you even THINK you have come down with the flu, go to your doctor right away and find out. If you catch it early enough, you may be prescribed Tamiflu which will greatly lessen the symptoms and shorten the course. Other vaccines all adults should consider: 2 Mumps-Measles-Rubella (the “MMR”) vaccines on board if you were born on or after 1955. 1 Shingles vaccine at age 60 or older 1 PCV-13 (for pneumonia) at age 65 or older 1 PCV-23 6 months after the first one. 1 Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis which is whooping cough) every 10 years. Those with chronic conditions such as heart or lung disease, diabetes or have compromised immune systems should consider getting the pneumococcal vaccines earlier. What ELSE can you do to stay healthy in this germy season? Become fanatic about washing your hands with soap and water. Carry pocket sized hand sanitizer around and use it often. Greet people with a smile rather than a hand shake. Use hand sanitizer in restaurants after you have handled the menu. And when you sneeze, “Sneeze in your Sleeve.” Kate Murphy, RN - Parish Nurse
