WEEKLY WISDOM

My mental state of mind can often be determined by the weather. I am good with one or maybe two days of gray rainy days, especially if I can curl up with a good book. After a couple gray days, I need the sunshine. I do appreciate all the spring showers in anticipation of the May flowers. I need sunshine and color in my life.

Due to the Coronavirus I have some extra time on my hands and have already planted all my pots (flowers purchased with good social distancing and a mask J) and I look forward to the burst of color. I love spring with all the new signs of life, but this spring has been quite different as most of us are social distancing and staying at home. Even as we use social media in new ways to try to stay connected to our friends and loved ones there still are times that we let anxiety and fear creep in more often than normal.

My personal reprieve has been turning to God’s Word more often than I did pre-Covid19. I need the reminder that God has each and every one of us in his hands. I find solace in replacing doubts with God’s words. You only need to google Bible verses about faith and fear and you will find a plethora of options. Here are some options to get you started and see where it will lead you:

• Deuteronomy 31:6• Joshua 1:9; 43:11• Psalms 34:4; 37:5; 46:9-10; 94:19; 118:8 Proverbs 3:5-6;

12:25; 32:10; 56:3• Isaiah 35:4; 41:10• Jeremiah 17:7• Matthew 6:34• Mark 6:50• Hebrews 11:1

It is Not Too Late to Join Us!

The Women’s Book Circle meets the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome! Note: Canceled until further notice.

The Women’s Scripture Circle meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. Note: Canceled until further notice.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3, 2020

2020 Annual Diocesan Appeal:Building Our Family of Faith

In honor of this landmark year for our Diocese, Bishop Knestout has announced a special Bicentennial Challenge to raise $5 million through this year’s Annual Appeal. To date, 74 families have donated $28,460.00 toward our goal of $58,760.00, putting us at 48.43% of our target. If you have already made your 2020 Appeal gift, please accept our gratitude for your commitment.Reaching this challenge will allow the Diocese to fund three key priorities: the education of our youth, care for our elderly poor, and support for our mission parishes. In addition, this success will flow back to all parishes and provide significant boosts to all the ministries supported by the Appeal. It is with these goals in mind that we hope our parishioners will join with us this year in making a pledge to the Appeal to help us launch our Diocese into the next 200 years.

PRISON MINISTRY:Thanks to Brian Alexander, the Prison Ministry Committee was able to hold a meeting April 21 on Zoom. Father René has approved the Church of the Holy Family’s participation in the Parolees Under Parish Sponsorship (P.U.P.S.) project. As a result, we will be able to sponsor a returning citizen in May by paying for his housing needs for a limited time We were also informed that a citizen from St. Bride’s was paroled to Onesimus House and has a job. The bills signed by Governor Northam on criminal justice reform encouraged our efforts to support such projects. But there is much more to be done and we invite others to join us at our next Zoom meeting on Tuesday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m. Further information can be obtained by calling George Horey at 757-496-1053.

If you have submitted a letter, the PPC will hold it for consideration when the process resumes; and if you are interested in being considered, you may submit a letter to the PPC email at any time. More information will come as things gradually open up again. If you have any questions, please feel free to email [email protected], safety and good health to each of you,Parish Pastoral Council

Dear Parishioners and Friends,I am truly amazed at your generous response to the call to meet the needs of food insecurity in our community. We have exceeded our goal of raising $10,000 in support of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Altogether we raised $22,000 with the match of $10,000 thus amounting to $32,000. That amount has a buying power of $192,000 worth of food. The Foodbank provides over fourteen million meals annually to meet the needs of seniors, children, and low-income families. The Director of Development for the Foodbank, Jessica Sullivan, would like to express her sincere gratitude on behalf of the local community for the generosity and compassion shown by the parishioners of Church of the Holy Family.I, too, would like to thank you all for the tremendous response you have shown to this call to action. This event has concluded, but this pandemic continues to impact us all, but especially those in need. We will make you aware as more needs appear.May the Lord bless you abundantly for caring!God bless you,Fr. René Castillo,Pastor

HAITI UPDATE AprilWhat’s new with our sister parish in Baptiste Haiti?

Please keep our twinning parish in Baptiste Haiti in your prayers. Initially COVID-19 was slow to reaching Haiti because the country was on lockdown due to protest at the beginning of the year. Now the virus is trickling in through the Dominican Republic. (Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola). The border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic is currently closed; however, many Haitian are returning to Haiti due to losing employment. Also on April 23, 129 Haitian deportees arrived in Haiti from the United States. As of April 27, there were 74 cases of COVID-19, 6 deaths, and 7 recoveries in Haiti.

Lack of sanitation, inadequate healthcare, inability to social distance, lack of testing, and food insecurity compound the challenge Haitians will face in the upcoming months.

Currently in Baptiste there are 2 doctors and 6 nurses working at the clinic. There is a COVID-19 response team in Belladere (15 miles away from Baptiste) Anyone with a fever is taken to Belladere.

In a recent email from Fr. Ronel of Baptiste, he expresses his concerns. “I am worried and fear for the people of Haiti. I am afraid if Haiti gets hit bad, it will be a national catastrophe. I try to strengthen their faith in God because at times like this people tend to lose faith.”

Holy Family Haiti Committee has sent $3,000 USD to Fr. Ronel to buy food in Belladere for parishioners in our twinning parish in Baptiste.

Thank you for your continued support as we pray for our twinning parish of St Jude in Baptiste Haiti.
