NASCAR announced recently that it has restructured itsmanufacturer points system for 2014, simplifying it for fans, competition and the industry, while amplifying the alreadypassionate rivalries between each auto maker.
The new points system – which applies to all three nationalseries – mirrors the owner championship points structure.Points will be awarded to the single highest finisher for eachcar manufacturer in each championship event according tothe finishing position awarded for each race. Specifically, inthe NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, points will be awarded as fol-lows (43-1, plus bonus points). Points will be awarded in a sim-ilar manner in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (43-4, plusbonus points) and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series(43-8, plus bonus points).
Three additional bonus points will be awarded to themanu-facturer that wins the race. The single highest finisher foreach manufacturer will receive one additional bonus point forleading a lap, and one additional bonus point for leading themost laps.
Example: In a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, if a Toyotafinishes in each of the top three positions and the winningToyota leads the most laps, and a Chevrolet finishes in fourthposition without leading a lap, Toyota will receive 48 pointsand Chevrolet will receive 40 points.
“We have always focused on intensifying the natural rival-ries between our manufacturers – both on the race track andin the showroom,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice pres-ident of competition and racing development. “We believealigning the points system with the owner points will createbetter understanding for the entire industry, and bolster inter-est and excitement with our fan base, which has shownintense manufacturer loyalty throughout the sport’s history.”
At the end of the season, if two or more manufacturershave the same number of points, the manufacturers’ champi-onship will be awarded to the manufacturer with the greatestnumber of first-place finishes. If there is a tie in victories, thegreatest number of second-place finishes, third-place finishes, etc. will break the tie. If a tie still remains, the manufacturerhaving the earliest win of the current season will prevail.
The 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season gets under-way with The Sprint Unlimited on Saturday, Feb. 15 and the56th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 23, both at DaytonaInternational Speedway. 700,000+ Votes Determine WinnerOf The Second-Annual ‘Drive ForThe Cover’ Contest
DAYTONABEACH, Fla. – Tony Stewart fans have spoken, and they’ve made it clear that they cannot wait to see the driv-er of the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet back onthe track, even if it is on the cover of a video game. NASCARannounced today that fans worldwide have cast more than700,000 votes in the “Drive for the Cover” campaign, ultimate-ly selecting three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championStewart to appear on the cover of NASCAR ‘14. Stewart hasappeared on the cover of the officially licensed NASCARgame twice before, but this is the first time he was selected byfans.
“Being selected by the fans to be on the cover of NASCAR‘14 is a huge honor,” said Stewart, co-owner and driver forStewart-Haas Racing. “It’s been a long couple of months, butmy fans’ passion has been one of the driving factors in helpingme rehab and my ability to prepare for returning to the racecar in February.”
It was clear early on that Stewart was going to be hard todefeat. During the five-week contest, conducted entirely onFacebook, Stewart dominated each round of the competition.Stewart’s closest opposition came in the final round againstanother fan favorite, four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Serieschampion Jeff Gordon. Stewart accumulated nearly one-fifthof all the votes cast during the “Drive for the Cover” cam-paign.
“In the midst of a racing season cut short by injury, thenumber of fans who voted for Tony speaks volumes about theexcitement surrounding his return,” said Blake Davidson,NASCAR vice president of licensing and consumer products.“For a campaign that was heavily driven by social media, themore than 700,000 votes cast in the ‘Drive for the Cover’ cam-paign is a testament to the social media prowess of our indus-try and fans.”
NASCAR ‘14 is scheduled for release in early 2014 on thePlayStation® 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox360® games and entertainment system from Microsoft, forthe suggested retail price of $49.99. Stay tuned for the officialrelease date and a first look at the game soon.
