MORGANS SCIENCE FAIR
LAND AND SEA ICE
AIM: To find out if different sized ice cubes affect the water level.
HYPOTHESIS: My hypothesis was that I thought the largest ice cube would affect the water level the most because it has the largest mass of water made into ice.
EQUIPMENT: ¼ cup measurement½ cup measurement1 cup measurement4 ice cream containers or milk bottles Measuring jug
METHOD: 1.Freeze water in the measured cups.
3.Release the ice from the containers.2. Place one ice cube in each container.4. Place 600mL water in each container.5. Draw a line where the water level is.6.Wait until ice is melted. 7.When ice is melted pour water back into measuring jug to see if water level has changed8. Record results.
VARIABLES: INDEPENDENT:The size of the ice cubes DEPENDENT:Water level and the volume of water CONTROL:The amount of water in the containers. The amount of water used to make each ice
cube.
RESULTS:¼ cup ½ cup 1 cup

CONCLUSION:I LEARNED THAT THE APPEARANCE OF
THE WATER LEVEL DOESN’T CHANGE WHEN AN ICE CUBE MELTS, BUT THE VOLUME OF WATER DOES.
MY HYPOTHESIS WAS RIGHT. THE LARGEST ICE CUBE DID AFFECT THE WATER LEVEL THE MOST.
NEXT TIME WE SHOULD TRY AND DO OUR EXPERIMENTS AT THE SAME TIME AND IN THE SAME WEATHER CONDITIONS TO SEE IF OUR RESULTS BECOME MORE SIMILAR.
APPLICATION:After doing my science fair I discovered
that if an ice cube melts the appearance of the water level doesn't change, but the volume of water does. In real life, if the Arctic melted the water level would stay the same and small island nations wouldn't be flooded under water.
