InfoThe questions to my evaluation are

found within the ‘articles’ in my magazine. Keywords of the

questions are found within the little contextualised info of the artist

underlined.

This PowerPoint is interactive and therefore action buttons are placed throughout. Audio is also placed

within the power point and is quite low therefore, I suggest that you

turn your volume up near the maximum limit.

A home button is placed top right of the screen on every slide, if you get

confused or want to re-read the beginning of one of the questions again it will send you back to the

contents.

Enjoy!

Q. In what ways does your media product use,

develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Music magazine conventions for a front cover:•Memorable title( usually short)•Header and/or footer giving information about magazine or its contents•Barcode and price•Medium close-up/close-up shot of artist•Pictures of other artists•Captions of things included in the magazine•Advertisement techniques

Conventions for a contents page:•Page title e.g. contents•Page numbers therefore the articles are easily locatable•Images from articles featured within the magazine•Recurring color scheme- black, grey with a hint of purple•Different sections in the magazine- like review section etc.•Editors note•Number of issue

Conventions of a magazine article:•Headline or page title•Pictures of the artist- normally long shots or medium shots•Picture normally takes up one page•Page number•Captions about the artist•Similar ‘column’-like layout•Recurring color scheme•Different color text for the ‘answer section’

Matching conventions:

•Short memorable title•Bold lettering•Layout-captions and choice of picture•Capture the essence of music by having high music figures and idols for the chosen genre• Pictures maintain eye contact with the reader•Header and footer•Advertisement technique

Things that challenge music magazine conventions:

•Choice of colour contrast- the picture contrasts with the black and white colours on the magazine where as the picture in Q keeps with the same colour contrast as the background.•Layout of the title lettering- does not mask the artists head•Contrasting colour for the advertisement box

ABOUT VISUAL CODES- THE MOD SYMBOL

My contents were something that my audience really liked. One of the answers that I got to question three ,“ what makes the pages look professional and what stops them from looking professional?”, was the layout, furthermore, one of the audience members

advanced their answer with “In my opinion the contents page was the best due to the cool and slique design of it. “ I was really pleased due to the amount of magazines studied to create these contents pages.

Matching conventions:•Contents have a similar layout ,for example, the text has the same structure•Similar colour scheme- however, I placed the colour purple back in order to re-iterate the fashion side of the magazine ( due to the 50’s and 60’s being back in fashion also I decided to include a filled circle within the letter O, giving connotations of the old ‘mod’ symbols.) Furthermore, the colour scheme I have used has been done to give a neutral taste to my magazine where as they have only done it to highlight everything on the page. •Same picture elements- information on the picture as to what page the article is on etc.•Issue number-allowing the audience to see if they have either missed or either eager to buy the next upcoming issue

Things that challenge the conventions:•Picture layout- Q for example, has used most of the space on the page on one main picture, presumably on one of the main articles•Text difference with the use of colour and size- where as they used red again I have used more spacey bolder text•Men’s gossip section included- placed to give something new to the genre•Lifestyle pictures- to show the reader that some fitness will be involved in the magazine.

Page 10: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

I decided to integrate the ‘mod’ badge in due to the iconic pop and rock and roll bands that came in during the 1950’s and 60’s like the Beatles and the beach boys. These iconic bands revolutionised what music is today and due to the fashion being ‘back in’ at the moment I thought it would be quite interesting to place it in my magazine.

The Beatles’ suits compared with a navy loaded deconstructed suit from TOPMAN

Article

A lot of people liked the article. One of the people who filled in the questionnaire expanded

their answer for number six. They stated “ the thing that makes it look professional is the layout and the pictures” ,they explained that “I like how there's more than one of you and I like the background”. I was really pleased with the answer back as the main thing I tried to replicate was the layout of a music article.

Matching conventions:•Similar structure- for example, the text and the use of colour•One page for the main picture

Things that challenge the conventions ( with the particular magazine especially):•Choice of pictures- normally in a magazine when the article is about AN artist, there are several little pictures used in the article. Wheras, in my magazine there are no little pictures within the article but 3 long shots of the artist layered on the second page.( I got the idea from certain lifestyle magazines that focus on the theme of fashion like GQ and FHM•Use of Captions for the artist like “pop sensation, Music Master and Trend setter”

Page 12: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation
Page 13: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Comparison to other existing magazinesThe picture within my magazine is much like the one of GQ’s article picture of Justin Timberlake, the only difference being that mine is more formal and contains all long shots. The reason behind this is due to it giving connotations of the article giving the real look at the artist and me not wanting to just copy a style that is already in a magazine(especially with it being lifestyle). Both pictures however contain similar clothing schemes; grey, black and white. Furthermore, it gives different angles of the artists.

Both pictures show the artist either becoming more fun or becoming their image. For instance, in the GQ magazine the Timberlake that everyone knows is shown at the front and the real him is shown at the back and having fun. However, in mine we see a reverse, we see what the public see as the artist at the back and we see the real artist at the front with one of the layers stripped showing how the article is about the real him. Additionally, side lighting is used in both to show this.

Q. How does your media product represent

particular social groupsMy Magazine features old recreations and developed social groups like ‘Mods’. However, most

social groups are simply developed subculture groups from the 1960’s onwards. This can be seen with the use of costumes and the use of its appearance. My magazine also represents other social groups like young male musicians. A possible stereotype for my social group represented could be someone like Mark Ronson. An example person that I have placed on all my possible prototypes for my magazines pages during the research period

The social groups in my magazine are those who like fashion as all the artists displayed have fashionable clothes on. Costumes like the artists have on in the magazine are found in places like TOPMAN. TOPMAN contain these kind of clothes found on MODS. MODS , now outdated, have been developed and the clothes still worn by people are found in my magazine.

Mark Ronson and my representations

Mark Ronson is a stereotype of the kind of people that my magazine represents- he wears skinny fit suits, slim ties, very ‘in’ to fashion and keeps to the genres R&B, pop and occasionally Indie Rock. He is represented as someone who is serious about his profession and very ‘classy’ about his appearance.

My picture does very much the same. Moreover, the use of eye contact in both shows the reader that the artist is not afraid of the camera. Furthermore, a similar kind of pose is done with the pictures in order to highlight the kind of celebrity stereotype that is represented within my magazine.

Page 18: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

COSTUME AND APPEARANCE

Slim fit costumes are used on all my artists nearly. From my models to existing artists now like the ‘Hurts’. Furthermore, although my music is Pop and R&B , costumes used are those like the social group of Mods. Additionally, a lot of bands like ‘The Jam’ used to wear these kind of suits and although these are subculture groups and social groups and could be seen as INDIE, its not. In fact the social group used is quite popular and even though ‘Mod’s are not known today the kind of people that go into places like TOPMAN are buying the style and therefore, causing the social group to live on. Moreover, the kind of artists that inspired the social group and developed this sort of style are main stream and worked with conglomerates as seen below.

THE JAM( a mod revival band that did similar punk rock music)

POLYDOR RECORDS

Owned by Universal

Polydor- has artists such as Take That, Cheryl Cole,The Saturdays, James Morrison, Kaiser Chiefs, Boyzone, Alphabeat, The Courteeners,Rachel Stevens and Ellie Goulding.

Furthermore, all of the male artists owned by POLYDOR records are similar dressed and are given their image by their label therefore showing that social groups like MODS that my magazine shows through its use of costume live on. Additionally, such artists are shown in my magazine. Boyzone in particular are shown top left of my first contents page on tour.

Page 19: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

How the use of certain details on my media product represents particular social groups

Mise en scene-

Lighting is used to represent the dark side of this social group. It also reflects on how the social sub-culture group ‘Mod’ contained elements from the dark side and human quality of music (Punk) and how lyrics like those from ‘The Jam’ had another sort of social group and music genre and quality behind it.

The appearance of the pictures, although done for this fashion edge side, shows the R&B side of the image. Furthermore, how the lyrics relate to the human behaviour and prejudice and relate to the issues always mentioned in R&B style songs

Page 20: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Q .What kind of institution might distribute your

media product and why?

The kind of institution that would distribute my media product would be

“IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men – almost 26 million UK adults – while our websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month”

This kind of institution in particular publishes NME and has a choice of women’s fashion and lifestyle magazines. I feel that my magazine would be brilliant for them as my magazine not only focuses on music like NME but focuses on men’s fashion allowing their media group to have a hybrid of gender’s.

Furthermore, it would make them high competitors to those like Bauer media who publish things like FHM.

Page 21: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Q. Who would be the audience for my media

product?Through the use of initial research (questionnaire and findings) I have seen that my audience would mostly be around 16-25 and white British male. I have also noticed found out my audience by using demographic profiling and by GRASS.

M E N ’ SG O S S IP

In order to find out who my audience is I used existing celebrities and an exterminating strategy to find them.

Page 23: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Lord Alan is deciding ...Click for Lord Sugar’s verdict and see who my audience is

Page 24: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

So there we have it. The potential audience for my product.

These would be the potential audience because of the financial credentials within sections of my magazine- the lifestyle section (because a good gym can be quite expensive) and fashion (because it is one of the most expensive markets)

They would be the perfect audience to target due to them wanting to remain in the high end of fashion and them wanting to know the information about where and when they can get music, buy expensive fashion brand goods like ARMARNI etc. and want to know about celebrity gossip.

Page 25: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Psychographic profiling

My kind of audience using Young and Rubicam’s cross-cultural consumer characteristics would probably be ‘Aspirers’. The reason for this being that they like status and what better than a magazine that provides them with the newest and best selling music with a USP of high fashion clothes and tips. However, this could also appeal to ‘mainstreamers’ due to the genre of music being Pop. Pop of course, short for popular, is music that everyone likes, a genre that everyone buys causing mainstreamers to buy the magazine. It’s the ‘conformity’ genre ensuring mainstreamers would buy it. Furthermore, I expanded when doing my research to find out who my kind of reader would be. He border lined on mainstream/aspirers as he liked well known brand names and artists but liked to be in the fashion market.

Q .How did you attract/address audience?•I wanted my title to be black because I wanted to highlight the gender in which it mostly appeals to, males•Bold lettering and a short memorable name gave it a sense of simplicity making it appropriate for males.•They key image gives a sense of sophistication and style and shows my audience the kind of style that is ‘in’ at the moment allowing them to soak up the visually, the sort of clothes on offer.•The male model makes it obvious as to what gender it is aimed at due to him modelling males fashion.•The picture containing a high level of intensity with the use of side lighting shows that it’s a ‘power’ image, moreover showing that my magazine is for males.•The text noticed for the name ‘M C B R I D E” is very spaced showing how each letter is important and the text is very bold allowing it to attract my audience.•The names used on my front cover are quite masculine and a lot of plosives are used to show that its aimed at males giving connotations of action and excitement.•Phrases used on my front cover suggest action, a genre most watched by males, “Taking the charts by force”- it also suggests dominance.

Page 28: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

EDITORS NOTE

The editors note, with its grey colour scheme, attracts male interest due to it being a brighter colour that stands out from the black making it more appropriate to males. Furthermore, it also presents the male audience with detail about the technology as males are associated with being the ‘tech guys’, therefore the use of technological language addresses my audience correctly and efficiently.

The contents page

The choice of articles focus on the highest selling artists at this time like “Rihianna” and also give information about new and upcoming artists like “Taylor Kane”. Furthermore, the women in this magazine could be seen in this magazine only for men’s gaze- the picture of the women at the top of the page is shown with a very short dress. Due to this being a men’s magazine, the women on here are placed in costumes for the man’s pleasure only, furthermore, the artist knows this and this is what makes them sell their music, equally, what makes the magazine sell also. The detailed information underneath attracts my audience due to it leaving them questioning as to what their “new single” is like, or what “future” is held for them . It also attracts the male audience because it provide them with articles about their idols- which predominately will be male artists.

Page 29: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

THE ARTICLE

The headline attracts my audience because of its use of language, “MFG EXCLUSIVE”, suggests immediacy and presents my audience with an eye catcher. The structure of the article is very simple with a n entire column devoted to the artists background and an extra two columns asking the artist questions that the male audience wants to hear. One question being about female nudity in the video gives my male audience what they want to hear. The use of the tripling adds to the attraction of the journalism and shows the age range it is aimed at. The use of the listing is done for simplicity and allows the younger end of the age range to understand clearly. In addition, the words and language used suggests it is a males article, “the newly crowned KING of pop”. Moreover, “king” obviously suited to the male audience. Additionally, a white male is used for the model insinuating that it is aimed towards more white British males. The layout of the article is very easy to read due to the colour coded scheme. (Questions in dark grey and answers being in white- a duller colour is used to attract my target audience.)

The use of the edited skin tone with the side lighting adds to the representation of what gender the magazine is aimed at and is much like chiaroscuro lighting with the background. The suit is worn for the ‘power’ effect. The ‘power suit’ adds to the image of the artist and presents him as a ‘King’ reinforcing the masculinity and target audience.

Side lighting is used in the images and all three are put together to show the overwhelming power of the artist.

Q .What have your learnt about technologies

from the process of constructing this product?

Research and planning

Problem How I solved it What I have learnt from the technology

Internet The internet not responding is a technical limitation

I got used to how programs work on the apple computer and how only two windows could be open at a time.

Blogger- this has been a piece of technology that has allowed me to continuously update my project.

I have learnt how to blog and how to keep all the work together on an internet site whether it be a series of updated images or just little evaluations.

Magazines- existing pieces of media has helped me create a sense of realism to my magazine and amend any mistakes of theirs in my magazine.

I have learnt the conventions of magazines and recurring things that allow the magazine to sell.

Camera- this allowed me to take all my pictures for my magazine.

Pictures went missing on the camera. One camera card was corrupted and therefore required to take pictures again. Getting the correct setting

In order to solve all of these problems I did checks using the computer about the camera card. After doing checks, I enhanced the brightness and lessened the blur of the camera.

Throughout the whole process, I used different technologies and learnt about their uses. Throughout the research and planning phase I got to understand how to use the certain technologies. Furthermore, I encountered certain problems doing the first phase, such problems are seen below.

Technology was used throughout the process even to present results. Thus PowerPoint graphs were used in order to present them. Technology was a great way to show results due to its allowing me to insert figures quickly and clearly and make a graph or pie chart.

Technology has helped and hindered my magazine throughout the process however, I have learnt from its faults and it helped me to create what my magazine is.

Page 31: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Production Problem How I solved it What I have learnt from the technology

Cameras and tripods The legs of the tripods were often un even due to their being an indicator to tell how far each one could descend

I used the clips to fully extend all legs and capture the eye-line close up I wanted to show on my magazine

Studio lighting- studio lighting often helped my establish the characters in my magazine.

After taking a shot I realised that one of the limitations of the studio lighting with the use of the camera was that some of the photos came out extremely light or dark depending on the camera’s settings

I constantly had to keep altering the lighting angles and change the settings of the camera however, the turnout of the images was amazing.

I have learnt how to correctly use studio lighting to create an interesting composition for a picture. I have also learnt how to properly set it up.

In design- a program which I designed my magazine on

Due to the button configuration being different than a normal windows computer it was quite hard to remember what was enlarge etc. so most of the time was spent trying to undo the mistakes that I made

I did a tutorial and used the mouse more than the keypad- just a simple clash of technology configuration and remembrance really.

Photoshop- An editing program which allowed me to crop and cut any pictures I placed on my magazine.

It was extremely difficult to cut images out of the original picture and the way it was setup insured that the picture was not getting cut therefore causing confusion and allowing the pictures to not get cut. Furthermore, some of the toolbars were missing

I re-did the setting of certain keys in Photoshop and looked assistance off the web.

I have learnt how to airbrush a picture so it is appealing to the selected audience.

This is where I got used to technologies limitations and used what technology allowed me to its greatest leaps. Funnily enough, more problems occurred in this process even though I got used to the programs.

Evaluation Problem How I solved it What I have learnt from technology

In design

Photoshop

Dafont.com- a website which allowed me to download any font needed for my magazine

The problem was trying to find the folder dafont was downloaded in and to then import it to the folder needed so that any text documents would insure that print to be included

I seeked technological assistance and therefore when downloading the next font I was able to do it without loss of time or confusion.

I have learnt where and how to download new text fonts for appropriate projects and work purposes.

During the evaluation phase I found myself being quite comfortable with the technology needed to do my project. Within the final stage I managed to fully understand the tools needed to create a realistic magazine that could be sold in the market.

Page 32: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Q. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the

progression from it to the full product?

Page 33: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

The front cover

MFG can be not be compared to the preliminary task due to the difference of the quality and effort in the magazines.

I have learnt how to properly form a front cover of a magazine and use text and colour effectively to create a realism in its presentation. The use of the side lighting really helps the intensity of the magazine and the use of eye focus on the camera makes the magazine itself look professional as it grabs the reader’s attention. The use of the header and footer makes the magazine look more realistic as it helps the image of the magazine look much more professional in the way its done. I have learnt about colour schemes and what specific colour schemes work and help with the representation of genres as the students magazine gives a confusing idea as to what gender it is most suited to. The layout itself is more professional as the text is layered at the side whereas, the text on the magazine is placed on top of the model making the presentation seem empty.

Page 34: Morgan McBride's Print Project Evaluation

Conclusion

I feel that I have progressed well during the project and final product. I have learnt some skills that I never knew and it helped me create what my product is today. The use of existing media products helped me create my magazine as I was able to look at how magazines are set up etc.

I feel that some of strengths that my product has is its versatility and the fact that its slightly hybrid. However, I feel that the colours scheme would not appeal to the female audience and may slightly put them off the magazine however, the colour scheme is important and provides the magazine with a sense of professionalism. I am really impressed with what my magazine is like and very happy with its outcome and response via questionnaires etc.

Maybe one day they will create a magazine just like this, maybe.

“I would like to thank you for viewing this PowerPoint and appreciate the hard work I have put it to this as well as the

whole project, I hoped you enjoyed the little comical bits in the PowerPoint and only hope that you have liked it and see how

hard I have aspired for this magazine to look professional.”
