The Legion Of Doom!Present:
PBX's (Private Branch Exchanges)Local and WATS
Because of the danger of using ablue box, many phreakers have turnedto MCI, sprint, and other SCC's inorder to get free calls. However, theseservices are getting more and moredangerous, and even the relativelysafe ones like metrofone and all-netare beginning to trace and bust peoplewho fraudulantly use their services. However, (luckily), there is another,
safer way. This is the local and WATSPBX. If you have a modem or interfacefor your computer capable of tone dial-ing, you can find and make good use ofa great many of these "useful" numbers. If you don't have the hardware, it isstill possible, although it would be aVERY tedious process.
The PBX, or private branch exchange,is a private switchboard set up inoffice buildings, hotels, etc. Itallows people within the PBX to dialother exchanges directly, to place out-
going calls (what we're interested in),and sometimes to transmit their voicever the intercom system (lots ofPHUN!) There will at least 1 linegoing out of the PBX to the telco setup for outgoing calls only, and therewill also be at least one incoming lineto the switchboard. This is what we areinterested in. Some of the incominglines are always answered by theswitchboard operator, but some will beanswered by the PBX equipmemt. It willusually answer with a dialtone, the
tone will sound different for differentsystems. Some even answer with asynthesized voice! (These are very hardto find, though.) The ones which answerwith a dialtone are easy to find ifyou have a modem or hardware devicewhich can "hear" what's going on onthe phone line.
To find these fun thingies, youwill have to write a scanner program

which will dial each number in a pre-fix, either sequentially or in a randomorder, it really doesn't matter, and"listen" on the line for a constantsound longer than the normal length ofa ring. This could be done manuallybut it would take a hell of a longtime. Whenever the program finds anumber that makes a constant tonelonger than a ring, it should recordthe number in an array or something. Now, this number can be one of a fewthings. A noisy answering machine, asprint, MCI, etc access node, a personwho yells in the fone, the tone side ofa loop (nice), possibly a carrier ifyour modem can "hear" tones that high,or, hopefully, a PBX line. All yourscanning should be done between 6 PMand 7 AM because between 7 AM and 6 PM,many of these numbers will be answeredby the switchboard operator. When youare checking out your results the nextday and come accross a dialtone, enter
some touch-tone (TM) digits. Dependingon which type of PBX equipment and thelength of the codes, after 3-8 digitsit should either give a busy signal,a "reeler tone" (high-low tone), orhang up on you, or possibly tell youyou entered a bad code. Now it is timeto write a hacker for this PBX. If thecodes are 3 or 4 digits, there willmost likely only be one code, but ifthey are 5 or more digits there maybe more than one. If there are 3 or 4,your hacker should dial the access
number, wait for a dialtone, then dialthe digits and wait for a second, then dial a "1" (the reason for thiswill be explained shortly), and then"listen" for a dialtone. This wouldbe a hacker for a system that givesa reeler tone, listening for the dial-tone and hearing it would really meanthe presence of the reeler tone andmean that a bad code had been entered. The reason 1 is entered is to "quiet"the dialtone" If it was a good code,1XX or 1XXX will be valid extentions
on practically all PBX's. If yoursystem gives a re-order or hangs upafter a bad code, forget the one andjust listen for a dialtone, this willbe a good code. If there are 3 or 4digits, they should be tried sequen-tiallly (becuase there will probablyonly be one good one), if there aremore, take your pick between random andsequental. Now, when you (finally!!)

get a good code, you will call thenumber and enter the code and beconfronted with a second dialtone. THISIS THE EXACT SAME DIALTONE THAT ANYONEWHO PICKS UP A PHONE IN THAT PBX SYSTEMGETS. The reason this is important isbecause if they want to make an out-going call, they will usually pick upthe fone and dial 8, 9, or sometimes 7,and get another dialtone and then maketheir call, local or long distance. Andyou can do the same thing right now! These numbers also make a good tool toavoid being traced on telenet, etc, itwill just be traced back to thecompany which owns the PBX.Now for some phun with the PBX you
have just broken into to. You can dialall extentions directly on it (whichis what local PBX'S are primariallyused for legitimately, unless the com-pany has OUTWATS lines.) The mostphun extention of all is the PA system. On some of these, you can get on the
PA (intercom) and actutually talk overit from your house! It can be on almostany extention though, so you may haveto hunt for it. On some, 797 or 1234used to work, but those have mostlybeen eliminated, not due to phreakersbut because people inside the companywere figuring them out and using them! Some PBX's don't even have security
codes, you can just call up and dial9 and call wherever you want. On a fewthat I know of you enter the numberand then the code. If you want to know
what these systems "sound" like, thereare files on this and other systemswith long lists of WATS PBX numbers. The local ones are much safer to hackthough because you are not making awhole bunch of 800 calls which tendsto get bell very pissed. Also, I haveactually found modems and other wierdthings on some exchanges of PBX's, itmight be worthwhile to scan the numbersinside the PBX once to see what youfind. An important safety note: if you
heavily abuse a PBX and make manyoutgoing calls on it, after a fewweeks (or whenever their fone billshows up!) it is a good idea to lay offof it for a couple of months or sobecause they could get a trace on iteasilly, just like 800's. They willusually just change the code, though. One more interesing note, I once
found a PBX which had a direct link-

up to sprint! So by dialing 8 I gota line to sprint, no access codes, just area code and number. It's phunto phuck up sprint and have them notknow who the hell you are or where thehell you are!!
If you have any comments, sug-gestions, corrections, or questions, leave e-mail to Steve Dahl on any majorphreak board, I will be happy to reply.

that the developement of a commerciallyusable electronic switching system -in effect, a computerized telephoneexchange - presented vastly greatertechnical problems than had beenanticipated, and that, accordingly,Bell Labs had vastly underestimatedboth the time and the investment neededto do the job. The year 1959 passedwithout the promised first trial atMorris, Illinois; it was finally madein November 1960, and quickly showedhow much more work remained to be done.As time dragged on and costs mounted, there was a concern at AT&T and some-thing approaching panic at Bell Labs. But the project had to go forward; bythis time the investment was too greatto be sacrificed, and in any case, forward projections of increaseddemand for telephone service indicatedthat within a phew years a time wouldcome when, without the quantum leapin speed and flexibility thaty
electronic switching would provide, thenational network would be unable tomeet the demand. In November 1963, anall-electronic switching system wentinto use at the Brown EngineeringCompany at Cocoa Beach, Florida. Butthis was a small installation, essentially another test installation, serving only a single company. Kappel'stone on the subject in the 1964 annualreport was, for him, an almostapologetic: "Electronic switchingequipment must be manufactured in
volume to unprecedented standards ofreliability.... To turn out theequipment economically and with goodspeed, mass production methods mustbe developed; but, at the same time, there can be no loss of precision..."Another year and millions of dollarslater, on May 30, 1965, the firstcommercial electric centeral officewas put into service at Succasunna,New Jersey.
Even at Succasunna, only 200 of the
town's 4,300 subscribers initially hadthe benefit of electronic switching'sadded speed and additional services, such as provision for three partyconversations and automatic transferof incoming calls. But after that, ESSwas on its way. In January 1966, thesecond commercial installation, thisone serving 2,900 telephones, went intoservice in Chase, Maryland. By the end

of 1967 there were additional ESSoffices in California, Connecticut,Minnesota, Georgia, New York, Florida, and Pennsylvania; by the end of 1970there were 120 offices serving 1.8million customers; and by 1974 therewere 475 offices serving 5.6 millioncustomers.
The difference between conventionalswitching and electronic switchingis the difference between "hardware"and "software"; in the former case, maintenence is done on the spot, withscrewdriver and pliers, while in thecase of electronic switching, it canbe done remotely, by computer, froma centeral point, making it possibleto have only one or two technicianson duty at a time at each switchingcenter.
The development program, whenthe final figures were added up, was
found to have required a staggeringfour thousand man-years of work atBell Labs and to have cost not$45 million but $500 million!
