Tommy Gaither Head Coach
Tommy Gaither enters his second season as Head Coach of the Basketball Eagles with a full recruiting class on hand and his system firmly in place.
When faced with the task of hiring a men's basketball coach, Morehead State University administrators went looking for someone who had known success at the NCAA Division I level.
They found such a person in the 39-year old Gaither. Gaither, a native of Fort Mills, S.C., spent four
seasons at Baptist College in Charleston, S.C., accumulating a 70-46 record and becoming the school's all-time winningest coach.
His last two seasons at Baptist, Gaither led the Buccaneers to back-to-back 21-9 seasons, capturing the Big South Conference regular season and tournament championships both years. He was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 1985-86.
Gaither earned a general college diploma from Mitchell College in 1967. He earned a bachelor's degree from Clemson in 1969 and a master's degree from Clemson in 1977.
He began his coaching career at Indian Land High School, then moved on to Berkeley High School, and to Lower Richland High School. His record as a head coach in high school for eight seasons was 176-56.
He entered the collegiate coaching profession as an assistant coach at Clemson for two seasons. He also spent five years as the top assistant coach at GardnerWebb.
"I'm deeply honored that the fine people at Morehead State put their trust in me to take over the Eagle basketball program" Gaither said. "I think through hard work we will be much improved this season. We have more good athletes and our players are working hard."
"I think the fans like our style of play. We like to run with the basketball, and hope to play more manto-man defense this season. We feel that those two factors make for an exciting brand of basketball."
Gaither's wife Cindy is from Charleston, S.C. They have a son, Mike.

Jeff Burkhamer Assistant Coach
Head Coach Tommy Gaither wasted no time in filling one of his assistant coaching positions once he arrived on the MSU campus. Jeff Burkhamer, who served as Gaither's top assistant at Baptist College, accepted a
similiar position on the staff at MSU. "Jeff was the first one I went to when I came to
MSU," Gaither said. "He's one of the brightest young coaches in the country today. A lot of the credit for the success we had at Baptist must go to Jeff for his recruiting and on-floor coaching."
Burkhamer, a native of Williamstown, W.Va., played college basketball and baseball at AldersonBroaddus where he received a bachelor's degree in 1984. He was a three-year starter in basketball and is the all-time assist leader at Alderson-Broaddus.
He coached at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., before joining Gaither's staff at Baptist. He was a four-sport star at Williamstown High School, where he was a first-team all-state selection as a point guard on the basketball team
