Keighley MP, Kris Hopkins visited Myers Building Supplies Silsden on Friday 16 January 2015 to hear about the challenges facing the construction industry.
Mr Hopkins met James Berry, the managing director of Myers Group to better understand the challenges facing the construction industry and tour the Silsden branch.
James Berry said: “The construction industry is recovering across the country. But it is a much softer recovery in the North than the South East and it is important that this message is heard in Westminster. There is also a major disparity between national construction and distribution companies and regional operators. We have seen the impact of schemes such as Help to Buy, largely benefit the national companies. We are grateful for the time Kris Hopkins spent with us to hear more about our business and the wider industry.”
Myers Group Directors James and Katie Berry meet Kris Hopkins MP
Growth in the construction industry slowed for the third consecutive month in December, but the UK’s booming property market helped round off the best year for British builders since 1997. Housebuilding was the strongest performing part of the construction industry.
Hopkins said: “Myers Group is a growing business with a long tradition in Yorkshire. As a valued employer in Silsden, I am here to support their growth and further investment in the area. Builders merchants are key to supporting the many builders and allied trades who are so important to the local economy and driving growth.”
The Myers Group employs 350 people across Yorkshire and invests heavily in skills and training to support its service levels to customers. Mr Hopkins also met members of the Builders Merchants Federation.

Johnsons Wellfield donated 3 large blocks of Yorkstone for the creation of three 2 metre figures representing Agriculture, Mining and the Monastic heritage of Pateley Bridge.
The sculpture forms part of the Way of the Roses public art trail, a coast to coast cycle route of 170 miles from Morecambe to Bridlington created by Sustrans. The route is popular with cyclists and tourists.
Pateley Bridge, being almost half way along the route, was selected as one of the major sites for a new piece of public art.
The finished sculpture is an amazing sight. If you’d like to see more images of this unique creation or are interested in how the sculptures emerged from initial concept drawings through to completion just visit www.josephhayton.co.uk

Local team of under-11s proudly sporting their new training kits sponsored by Myers Building Supplies.
Readymix Huddersfield recently donated concrete to assist with the construction of the foundation for an island, which is to be part of a larger scale project to create a Wildlife sanctuary in Huddersfield for Spring 2015.
The project, which is being co-ordinated by local Huddersfield company Learn2Fish, involves a number of local institutions, with much of the work being carried out by volunteers including construction students from Kirklees College.
Steve Kelly, of Learn2Fish explained,
“It just would not be possible to create this legacy for West Yorkshire, without the help of local companies. We appreciate the vital role played by Readymix Huddersfield. Generations to come will benefit from this unique project.”
Myers Building Supplies is supporting Kirkwood Hospice’s 2015 Midnight Memory Walk which is set to be a great occasion. Fun, laughter and wonderful memories are guaranteed.
The entry fee is just £12 per person (£6 for walkers aged 16 and under) and covers the cost of your place in the walk, your t-shirt, medal and breakfast butty. There is no minimum sponsorship requirement; the aim is to raise as much money as possible for Kirkwood Hospice.
Bacon butties, hot drinks and a medal for all, are available at the finish line. Don’t miss out. Dig out your walking boots and lace up for the Midnight Memory Walk 2015!
You can find more information about Kirkwood Hospice and register for the 2015 Midnight Memory Walk at www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk
