The Arts Center In Orange is a nonprofit community arts center with a mission to increase the quality of life in our community by promoting an appreciation for fine contemporary arts in diverse styles and ideologies. This is done by providing: a forum to promote artistic excellence; scholarship and education; a venue for artists and artisans to work, teach, exhibit and sell work; and a place for the community to learn skills, and to participate in and enjoy the arts.

THE PRESIDENT’S CORNERAS I MENTIONED IN OUR LAST NEWSLETTER, THE TIME HAS COME FOR THE ARTS CENTER TO MOVE FORWARD WITH PLANS TO

RENOVATE AND MAKE USE OF ALL OF THE SPACE IN OUR FINE OLD MAIN STREET BUILDING.

THE ARCHITECTURAL FIRM OF ATWOOD HENNINGSEN KESTNER OF CHARLOTTESVILLE HAS HELPED US TO DRAFT A PLAN (AS YOU CAN SEE ON THE NEXT PAGE). IT IS A GOOD PLAN, CORRECTING EXISTING ISSUES -- SUCH AS AIR FLOW IN THE GALLERY AND CLASSROOM OVERCROWDING -- AND MAKING THE ARTS CENTER MORE ATTRACTIVE TO VISITORS AND MORE USEFUL TO OUR ARTISTS AND OUR COMMUNITY.

PHASE ONE OF THE RENOVATION WILL BE TO RESTORE THE BUILDING’S FACADE, CORRECT ANY STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCIES, AND COMPLETE RENOVATION OF THE FIRST FLOOR TO INCLUDE A DEDICATED CLAY STUDIO. MOVING CLAY TO THE BACK THIRD OF THE FIRST FLOOR WILL FREE UP THE EXISTING CLASSROOM AREA TO OFFER LARGER CLASSES, HOST ARTS CENTER EVENTS AND PROVIDE SPACE TO OTHER LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS.

BORN AND RAISED HERE IN ORANGE, LUCY B ALEXANDER HAS GENEROUSLY OFFERED A $50,000 MATCHING GRANT CHALLENGE TO FUND THE FIRST PHASE OF OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN. IF WE CAN COME UP WITH $50,000 IN DONATIONS, SHE WILL MATCH THEM WITH A DONATION FROM THE ANNE RUSSELL GWYN ROBERTSON & A. STUART ROBERTSON JR. FUND OF THE CHARLOTTESVILLE AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION!

ALTHOUGH, STILL IN THE “SILENT PHASE” OF OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, SOME VERY GOOD FRIENDS OF THE ARTS CENTER IN ORANGE HAVE ALREADY COMMITTED TO $17,000 TOWARD THE $50,000 WE NEED FOR PHASE ONE.

YOUR SUPPORT OF OUR OPERATION IS CRITICAL. IF YOU CAN FIND A WAY, WE WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT OF OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN. YOUR GENEROSITY IS TRULY APPRECIATED.

I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE ARTS CENTER IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

ED HARVEY, PRESIDENT

P.S. PHASE TWO -- RENOVATION OF OUR SECOND FLOOR TO INCLUDE STUDIO RENTAL, MORE GALLERY AND COMMUNITY SPACE AND A MUSIC LOFT -- WILL WAIT UNTIL FUNDS BECOME AVAILABLE. IT IS OUR PRACTICE TO MOVE CAUTIOUSLY. BUT, WE HAVE HIGH HOPES FOR MAKING THE ARTS CENTER IN ORANGE THE BEST LITTLE ARTS CENTER IN CENTRAL VA!

Coming to the Morin Gallery :

Toys John Corrao My inspiration for this series came from my collection of late 19th and early 20th century cast iron toys. They usually sat in an orderly fashion next to the kitchen table, cars on one shelf trucks on another, etc. Each morning they greeted me complete with their hard earned nicks, dings, wear spots and rust--a testament to the generations of children that played with them. They touched me, put a smile on my face and connected me to the past and a time of less wired childhoods.

Alas, when the kitchen was to be painted the collection was unceremoniously moved to the dining room table. There was no order, trucks with planes, tractors with dolls, pure chaos! Toys which here-to-fore had never met began to form friend-ships and alliances. They saw each other in a new light as I did. So inspired I began a series of “Toy” paintings. Which included no less than 54 wheels, 27 marbles, 24 Cheerios, 19 ½ M&M’s, 13 Crayons and 1 stinkbug, but who’s counting.

Through these paintings the toys and their former owners once again come alive with playful purpose, but now with a 21st century twist. JOHN S. CORRAO

Megan Marlatt My work draws inspiration from the multitude of corky characters and funky forms produced in plastic toys. Most of the toys I choose to paint are products of packaged fast food meals for children found in thrift stores and yard sales. The paintings I create from these discarded play-things often fall into two polar oppositions: one being critical of our consumer society, the other being complicit to it. Colorful and glossy, I some-times paint these small toys in densely packed piles that speak to me of mass consumerism, chaos and cultural vertigo. Other times, I isolate a special toy and focus on it endearingly while animating it in paint. In addition, I am interested in depicting the plas-tic material of these toys. Introduced into this world about the same time I was born, plastic has proliferated in excess as I have aged. I con-sider it a substance relevant to my era and de-lineating its properties on canvas is my challenge as a contemporary painter. To this end, I paint directly from observation and I begin with acrylic paint to convey the toys’ bright plasticity. The pictures then proceed with coats of oil paint to render volume and form in the tradition of Flem-ish still life painting. In this manner, they reflect my ambivalent cultural makeup as an American artist who has adopted the European practice of oil painting in a Post-Modern plastic world.MEGAN MARLATT

In the clay studio at The Art Center in Orange, Barbara Smith applies dark brown glaze to the ears of her clay fox sculpture. Sixteen inches long nose to tail, he is intently preparing the pheasant at his feet to feed his family His mate watches his progress and their four pups, who are paying little attention to either parent. One pup is on his back, rolling on a feather. Another is chasing his brother. “They are family-oriented,” Barbara explains. “They stay with one another for life. They’re devoted to each other.”

Barbara only sculpts animals. “You have to do what you are connected to.”

Two of her dog sculptures were juried into a national exhibit in Wichita, Kansas. After her sculpture of a snapping turtle preparing to strike (“Last Warning”) was accepted into a show in New York City by the National Association of Woman Artists, Barbara was one of four sculptors nationwide to be juried in as a member of the prestigious organization.

Barbara, who does not have a degree in art - “I just have my own eyes” - has been around animals since childhood. “I always stayed with the horses. Hunting, racehorses --all of it. “I have a photographic memory for horses. When I see a good horse it clicks in my mind and if I see it again - anywhere, in any condition- I recognize it.

“But just because you spend your time with horses, doesn’t mean that you can put it into clay or paint. You’re either compelled to do it or you are not. Or maybe you want to, but you’re afraid. You’ve got to start. When the clay got in my hand it just worked”

Barbara draws “only enough to sketch my ideas. Sketching gets you back into two dimensions.”

She puts in two hours every morning at the Art Center. “I just plug away at what I do. I do the best I can every time. I’m competitive - with myself. I can see my own mistakes.

“You have to have your own ideas. You have to inspire yourself. You have to make it work. Because, after all, copying someone’s else’s work or style isn’t the answer - is it?”

Inspiration comes when it seems like the birds are moving along to the music, or if can’t get the thought of the leaves spin-ning up from the car in front of me out of my head, if I feel dizzy on love, or when I try to make sense of sadness. If I blush or dance or feel the energy of things con-nected, when I listen to music that sets me in a world of color and movement, that is when I paint. Sometimes I don’t understand what I am painting, until I am finished with it. I can compare it to finding meaning in dreams. I try to incorporate all of my senses into each piece, so that I can see the experience and not just the picture. Balance and movement in the composition are important to me. I want the eye to keep moving just as though I were surrounded by the painting when looking at it. I never stop thinking about it, what’s next to paint, always watching for the motion, the emotion, the connection and the next opportunity to bring a canvas to life.”
