What does it mean to be a Gold Eco School?

We turn off lights and power down computers

whenever we can

We bring litter-less lunches and ‘Boomerang’ our

lunches home if contents cannot be recycled or

composted

We do not idle our cars in the parking lot or the drive-

way of the school during drop-off in the morning

We reduce paper using both sides; we reuse water

bottles, and we recycle containers, paper goods,

batteries and toner cartridges

Eco Camp…Here we come!

Congratulations to 6 of our lucky students who will

be attending Eco Camp to represent Moraine Hills

P.S. at Cedar Glen Camp from November 9th to

11th with Mrs. Drawetz. They will be trained in the art

of environmental leadership through outdoor

activities and teambuilding exercises with students

and teachers from many other York Region schools

and will then be part of our Eco Leadership team

back at the school.

As the cold weather approaches, it is

timely to start thinking about inclement weather reminders.

Being physically ac-tive during winter is an essen-tial part of a healthy lifestyle and recess is one opportunity for students to be active.

Students need to come to school dressed to play out-side during recesses. It is ad-visable for children to bring extra pants and socks in case they get wet.

We keep a close eye on weather conditions, includ-ing wind chill. When condi-tions necessitate, students will remain inside for recess or sometimes go out for a short-ened recess depending on con-ditions.

school, they will be expected to go outside for outdoor recesses.

We ask that parents be sensi-tive to the demands placed on our secretaries and not call the school to inquire about indoor recess, but ra-ther send their children dressed for outdoor winter play.

If poor driving conditions necessitate the cancellation of school bus services, local and Toronto radio and T.V. stations and the board web-site will carry the information. A message will also be available at www.schoolbuscity.com. Please re-member: if busses are cancelled in the morning, they will not resume service during the day. Also please remember, bus cancellation does not mean that school is cancelled. However, if you choose to bring your children to school on a day when buses are cancelled, you must also make arrangements to pick them up by 3:05 P.M.

Inclement Weather

NEWS FROM OUR EQUITY TEAM The province of Ontario has an Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy. This strategy is designed to create an educational system that gives all students the opportunity to reach their highest potential by creating a school community where they feel safe, welcomed and respected. At Moraine Hills P.S., there is a staff and student equity team working to implement various initia-tives to help our school in our goal to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. This team will run a number of initiatives this year to meet our school commitment to caring for those in our school, our community and the global environment. This month, the students on the equity team will be focusing on bul-lying during the National Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, which takes place during the week of November 14th - 18th. Each month, in the school newsletter, one of our student equity team members will provide you with an update about the present and future equity initiatives at our school.

According to the Y ork Regional Police/York Region District School Board protocol, school administrators have the right to search school property, such as lockers and desks, without notice or permission from any person.

SEVERE ALLERGY ALERT As you are aware, we have several students who have severe allergies

to peanuts and tree nuts. We would like to remind you to refrain from

sending any food items to school which contain (or may contain)

peasnuts/nuts or any of their by-products.

Please make sure you check Hallowe’en treats before

sending anything to school as a snack.

THE SPORTS REPORT The Moraine Hills Hawks had a busy October. Our Cross Country team com-peted very well at

the Area Cross Country meet.

The Intermediate Volleyball Teams have been practising and are enjoying exhibition play. The boys’ volleyball team competed in a tournament at Crosby Heights last week win-ning 5 of their 6 games. The girls hosted our first tournament at MHPS. It was an excellent night of volleyball. The girls showed sportsmanship, resilience, and tremendous character to get their first win of the year. On Thurs-day, October 27th the Intermedi-ate Boys hosted their first cham-pionship tournament.

The Jr. Co-ed Volleyball tryouts (Grades 4 - 6) will begin towards the end of November.

Shortly you will be receiving the photo-graphs that were taken on October 14th. The photographers will be back on November 14th to take photos of students who were absent on October 14th or of students whose photos were obviously flawed.

NEXT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING: Monday, November 7th Our next school council meeting will take place on November 7th at 6:45 p.m. in the school library. Among other things, we will be talking about future fundraising events and looking at our EQAO results. Please join us!
