With Valentine’s Day comingup, one can’t help but get in themood to spread some love.Whether it is with a significantother, family, friends or evenstrangers, it is all about “smallacts of true love.”

In Moorestown, Maya DeSum-ma, 6, and her sister Ava, 5,though small themselves, decidedto do a big act of true love.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day,Maya and Ava held a hot cocoaand warm strawberry milk standoutside their house to raisemoney for their local food bank aswell as collect new Disney’s“Frozen” toys to donate to theChildren’s Hospital of Philadel-phia. They will be delivering thetoys as well as some “Frozen”movies on Valentine’s Day as a“small act of true love.”

    Olaf, the funny and loving

snowman from the movie, in-spired their little slogan, “smallacts of true love.”

“It is because of Olaf – he isfunny and makes you laugh. It’slike getting hugs and kisses,”Maya said.

“Olaf sees the best in every-one,” Ava said.

While Maya was at CHOP forpneumonia, she and Ava noticedall the toys they use to help dis-

tract kids from their difficult pro-cedures were old, and they didn’thave any “Frozen” toys or

“Frozen” movies.“I was sad because I love

‘Frozen’ and I didn’t have any of

my toys or movies from home,”Maya said.

    Excited about Martin Luther

King Jr. Day and wanting to emu-late what her teacher from BakerSchool told her, which was to dosomething nice for someone onthat day, Maya decided the daywould be perfect to do a hot cocoaand warm strawberry milk standto collect money for their localfood bank and “Frozen” toys forCHOP, with some help from hersister.

“I wanted to host the stand andcollect donations so I won’t be sador other kids won’t be sad whenthey are in the hospital,” Mayasaid.

Speaking to the child life direc-tor at CHOP, their idea was ap-proved and blossomed into awhole fundraiser.

The girls made “Frozen”marshmallow treats, painted anddecorated the “Frozen” donationbox, made signs, picked out thepicture for the flyer and made hotcocoa and warm strawberrymilk, Ava’s favorite drink. They

also played the “Frozen” moviesoundtrack to set the mood.Friends and family came from allaround to enjoy the treats andhelp Maya and Ava fulfill theirgoal.

“I loved and liked that so manyof my friends came and Ms. Andycame,” Maya said. Ms. Andytaught Maya in the Learning Cen-

    The Sun

Valentine’s Day is a time toshow your loved ones that you

care. Flowers and candies arenice ways to show that affection, but perhaps something personaland handmade might make agreater impact.

Writing a letter to that specialsomeone, whether they are nearor far, might be just the thing tomake that person’s day.

The Letter Writers Alliancegroup is an organization thatcould help you do just that.

Matthew Manella, of the Cher-ry Hill LWA group, has recently

started a group in Moorestown. The LWA group of Moorestownwill meet at the Moorestown Li-brary from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Feb.18. Although it is a little afterValentine’s Day, that doesn’tmean you can’t still send a letter.

The LWA is a non-profit organi-zation started in Chicago by twobusiness owners, Kathy Zadroznyand Donovan Beeson, who want-

ed to preservethe art of let-ter writing. Itis doing itspart to bringattention toslowing downand beingthoughtful inyour writingto people youcare about.

“It is aboutgiving back to the art of writing

letters to your family and lovedones,” Manella said.Manella decided to start an

LWA group of his own in CherryHill and now in Moorestown fortwo reasons. The first reason washe missed writing and receivingletters, especially around the holi-days. Manella’s grandfather was

f you sit on a school board or mu-nicipal governing body, you’re en-tering the part of the year that

probably causes you the mostheadaches. It’s budget time. It’s time todo the impossible: provide outstandingservice for little or no money.

A few years ago, Gov. Christie madeheadlines – and more than a few ene-mies – when he slashed state fundingand eventually added a 2 percent capon tax hikes.

Since then, at least some of themoney has returned. Sometime thismonth, the governor will release statefunding figures for this year.

But it’s safe to say that no district ortown will find itself rolling in dough.Governing bodies will continue to facedecisions that involve reducing orholding the line on services and/orraising taxes. And we all love more

taxes, don’t we?We already pay the highest property

taxes in the nation – $8,161 on average, according to recently-released datafrom the Department of CommunityAffairs – so why not pay more?

One bright spot – some would saythe only bright spot – to come of this isthat many governing bodies these dayshave made the budget process open tothe public.

    “Transparent” is the watchwordtoday.

It’s a smart move to involve the pub-

lic – everyone from those who want tocut taxes to the bone to those whowould like to see expanded services.

When the public is invited in, theynot only see the difficult choices lead-ers have to make, but they also feel likethey have a voice. Leaders are listening

to them. Their input is valued. Whilenot everyone will be happy with everydecision, at least there is a sense of in-clusion and “ownership” of theprocess.

We encourage everyone to get in-volved with their local budget process-es this year. In most instances, therewill be hearings. Items will be posted

online. It’s easy to offer your suggestions tothe people who eventually will makethe final decision.

And, chances are, your feedback willbe appreciated.

    in our opinion

Budget timeIt’s that time of year a gain w hen tough decisions have to be made

    Get involved

Think taxes are too high? Think serviceshave been cut too deeply? Now is the timeto make your voice heard. It’s budget sea-son, and most local governing bodies haveways to involve the public in the decision-making process.

    By KRISTEN DOWDThe Sun

According to tradition, a 25thwedding anniversary is celebrat-ed with gifts of silver. For a 50thanniversary, it’s gifts of gold. Andfor those fortunate enough tomake it to 75 years, diamonds areexchanged.

But what is the gift for an im-pressive 80-year marriage?

William and Williemae Full-wood may know. The Mt. Laurelresidents celebrated their 80thwedding anniversary last July, and are now working toward an-niversary No. 81.

According to William, there’sno big secret in achieving such amarriage milestone.

“Love,” he said with a smile.“That’s all I can tell you.”

The Fullwoods spent their mar-ried years in Burlington beforemoving to Mt. Laurel Center forRehabilitation and Healthcare,

where they recently celebratedtheir birthdays. William turned98 on Feb. 7. Williemae marked101 years on Feb. 9.

Their story begins in 1934,when William – a farmer – met

Williemae at an entertainmentevent at her school, where shewas a teacher. It was just “instinctand nature” that drew William toWilliemae, however, three yearsher junior, William’s charmdidn’t work on Williemae rightaway.

“She kept telling me I was tooyoung, but I kept coming back,”William said. “One day, she calledme and said she was ready.”

That was the beginning of their 80-year journey. The couplesettled in Burlington, raising 13children. Their family has sinceexpanded to include 42 grandchil-dren, numerous great-grandchil-dren and quite a few great-great-grandchildren, too. They werelongtime members of SecondBaptist Church of Moorestown.

William said while they hadlots of mild fights, they never hada big fight. They were wellmatched and lived a wonderfullife.

“We had a big family,” Williamsaid, “and we’ve done well.”

With boxes of heart-shapedcandies lining store shelves, shimmering red and pinkwreaths adorning front doors andvibrant rose bouquets fillingflower shops, there’s no questionwhat day is just around the cor-ner.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day.While it has evolved into a dayof gift-giving and expensive din-ner dates, the historic holiday hasromantic roots. What better wayto celebrate than with stories of long-lasting love from local cou-ples?

The last seat on the busCarmela “Millie” Kibler was

working in New York City whenshe received a telegram urgingher to return home to Boston asquickly as possible.

“My mom was sick. I didn’thave time to catch the plane ortrain. The last bus left five after 12midnight,” she said.

Millie just made it on the bus.“The minute I put my foot on

the steps, the motor came on,”she said. “The lights went out andI couldn’t find a seat.”

As she made her way throughthe bus, she finally found one loneseat and asked the man if it wastaken. He said no.

That man turned out to be Mil-lie’s future husband, Alfred Ki-bler.

“He talked my ear off,” Milliesmiled. “That weekend he calledme at home.”

The Kiblers started to date inMay, and they knew they wantedto marry by August. They tied theknot on Aug. 13, 1950.

They lived in Cinnaminson for37 years, moving to Delanco for 10years before their most recent

move to Brandywine Senior Liv-ing at Moorestown Estates. TheKiblers had two sons and onedaughter; they now have fourgranddaughters, too.

“Our family is our greatest ac-

complishment,” Millie said, adding with a laugh, “and the factthat we were able to tolerate eachother all those years.”

The couple has fond memoriesof weekend getaways to the TajMahal in Atlantic City and familyvacations to Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Tolerance is key in a long, happy marriage, Millie said.

The Kiblers are proud of their64 years together.

“She takes care of me and I tryto take care of her,” Alfred said.

“We’re so used to each other,”Millie added. “We wouldn’t knowwhat to do wi thout each other.”

Love through lettersWhile at her high school locker,

Caroline Liberi would often chatwith the girl using the locker next

door. After a while, this girl askedif Caroline would like to write let-ters to her brother, who was serv-ing overseas with the Army.

back on the detail. In his own lay-out, he created even the smallestdetails such as mailboxes, man-hole covers and people.

“I don’t hold back when itcomes to detailing something,”Rose said.

Almost everything Rose makesis handmade. He uses suppliessuch as wood, paper, cardstock, metal castings and real lights,

    just to name a few.

“Back when I started, thingswere very crude. You had to makeeverything yourself, and now Istill like to build,” he said.

Rose has a lot of favorite partsto model building. He enjoys get-ting started and being so inspiredthat there are times he can’t waitto get up and continue working. He also likes putting a lot of thedetail on his models, such asweathering pieces or putting in

    the working lights. Keeping busy

and having something enjoyableto do he said is the best part.“The worst part is when it is

done and there is nothing elseyou can do with it,” Rose said.

Although Rose doesn’t findanything hard about model trainbuilding, he does admit it is hardfor beginners because everythingis so expensive. What used to be a$14 engine can now go for $400 to$500.

“The hobby has changed a lot.

They aren’t catering to thebuilders. They want to sell trainsets,” Rose said.

Rose does worry about the lega-cy of his models as well as others. He hopes people still continue tocare about them and get into thehobby, not letting the pieces go towaste.

Each month or so, the librarywill display work by differentlocal artists.

an avid writer for most of his 90years. When his grandfatherpassed away about a year ago, hedid some organizing and found abunch of letters from his grandfa-ther. He noticed how much morethoughtful and meaningful thoseletters were than an email or textmessage.

“There is more of a loss of translation from an email or textmessage because they can bewritten so quickly. It lacks a cer-tain amount of care. I missedsending and receiving letters. Ihave children of my own, and I

was sad to learn that they mightnot learn cursive. It made methink of losing the art of writingletters,” Manella said.

His second reason for startingthese LWA groups was to helpothers. Manella, being a financialplanner, noticed that many peopledo so much for their family, pro-viding for and protecting them, but no one is aware of it. He want-ed people to realize they shouldcommunicate these accomplish-ments and feelings of why theydid what they did, in a personalletter or ethical will, otherwise itwill be all for naught.

Manella hopes the LWA groupshelp people find time to sit downand write letters. Just like thegym, it is something you just

need to get started and get intothe habit of setting aside time. And for an hour and a half, once amonth, it doesn’t seem like toomuch of a time commitment.

“Unless you carve out the timeto do these things, it is not goingto happen. What better place thana quiet library to write a letter?”Manella said.

According to Manella, it isn’thard to write a letter. All you needis to figure out your audience, de-cide what you would like to com-municate, write the letter and re-peat.

“It is that simple. It’s one of thesimplest clubs you can think of,and it is more fun when you do it
