Library News Thank you for your generous support of the many events taking place in the library this term. Students had lots of fun searching for ‘treasure’ in the library during lunchtimes and the costumes children and staff wore on Friday last week were amazing. A BIG thanks to Mr Thorpe and the Student Voice team for organizing the casual day and classroom treasure hunts. The Book Fair was well supported with popular books selling out quickly. We will let you know when the library receives the books families have ordered online. Only one week remains for students to complete the Premiers Reading Challenge, which closes on Friday 7th September.

Book Week Friday the 24th of August was a jam packed, fun-filled day at Moonta Area School. The day kicked off with our R-12 Assembly which included recognition of student achievement. This included acknowledgement of student participation and records broken at the Secondary School Sport SA Track and Field Championships, recognition of students demonstrating our school values (Values Awards) and a wonderful performance of the song ‘Pure Imagination’ by our choir. Following the assembly, the R-6 Reading Together Morning was well attended by parents, caregivers and family members. It was wonderful to see so many students reading to people from their close networks. After recess the excitement levels rose for the R-6 Book Week parade.

Many students were dressed as their favourite book characters and it was an opportunity for everyone to appreciate their wonderful costumes. The grass hill was abuzz with an array of colour and chatter between students, staff and families. After lunch R-6 students were involved in a treasure hunt organised by junior captains Matilda Carruthers-Murray and Ashleigh Mobbs in line with the Book Week theme, ‘Find Your Treasure’. It was a fantastic day. I would like to thank all the staff and students that worked hard to organise and run the day, all the staff and students that dressed up and all the family and friends of students that attended. Also, a big thank you to Ms. Cross and the Year 10 hospitality students for the wonderful pop-up stall. Thanks everyone for supporting our event, Mr. Thorpe.

Fundraising for Farmers Hallie, Maeve, Charlotte, James and Peter have been raising money to support farmers suffering through the drought. They wrote letters to and visited local businesses to ask for donations for a raffle, and have placed donation tins in the businesses as well. So far they have raised over $250, with more still to come.

A big thank you goes to Miner's Couch, Nook and Nourish, Taste the Yorke, Café Capella's and Moonta Newsagent who supported the students ideas by donating vouchers and items for the raffle and keeping a collection tin in their store.

Thank you to everyone who supported the students by buying raffle tickets. The winners will be drawn tomorrow.

Good luck 😊

Mile End Athletics On Monday the 9th of April a group of 36 students went to Adelaide to participate in the Mile End Athletics Carnival. Everyone participated to the best of their abilities and did Moonta Area School proud. Overall we came second in Division 2 against schools that were quite a bit larger. It was a great day with a number of students getting personal bests and awarded 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their events. Congratulations to Will Drogemuller and Claudia Hatcher who achieved Standards in their events. This means that they achieved a standard of excellence and were ranked in the top 5 % of students in the state.

Also congratulations to those that placed in their events. The list that follows are those students who placed first in their events: Libby Adams, Olivia Congdon, Will Drogemuller, Patrick Fry, Claudia Hatcher, Brooke Irlam, Tyler Moore, Oliver Mullins, Bailey Nicholas, Mataya Pollard, Ashton Warmington, Declan Waters, Zarli Willshire. It was a fantastic day for Moonta Area School and the community should be very proud of our students. Thank you to all parents, students, volunteers and YP Coaches who helped make the day possible.

SAPSASA Basketball Years 5, 6 and 7 students travelled from Moonta to the Copper Coast Leisure Centre to participate in the Northern Yorke Basketball Carnival. The winners of the boys’ and girls’ competitions then progress on to the state meet in Adelaide. For the first time the students were able to play on the fully refurbished courts at the new Rec Centre. The extra indoor courts allowed for full-court games to be played during the carnival for the first time. The facilities were fantastic for the day’s play. Last year Moonta struggled to field teams - the boys did not have enough players for a team, and the girls were beaten comprehensively due to being so young compared to the other sides. This year was a different story, with the girls all a year older they were ready to challenge every opponent, and the boys have a few young ones coming through the ranks to help our Year 7s.

The first encounter for the day was for the girls, who took on St Mary MacKillop in what was a very evenly contested match. The lead jostled between the two teams up until the last 5 minutes when SMM pulled clear to win by 5 points. The girls then faced Kadina Memorial School, who year after year prove to be, by far, the strongest when it comes to basketball talent. In a positive for our girls it took us the longest to be mercy ruled when compared with the other teams that played KMS. Our last game was against Wallaroo Mines. The girls rallied together to come away with a comprehensive win in their last encounter for the day.

The boys had four games to play over the day compared to the girls three. The boys were very competitive in every game they played with some players showing tremendous growth in their ability over the years. Jett Smith proved himself to be one of the better point guards on the Northern Yorke with outstanding performances across all games. All other boys were able to play their roles well to support the lead provided by Jett. First up we had the eventual winners of the competition in Kadina.

We hung with them up until halfway through the match, after which Kadina slowly pulled away to just mercy rule us. Next we played St Mary MacKillop, who matched up against us really well, just like they did against our girls. Again, the lead jumped between the two teams until St Mary MacKillop pulled away in the last few minutes to win by six points. The only school in the boys’ competition thought to have the talent to beat Kadina was Harvest Christian College. We played them in our third encounter for the day. The boys drew level with Harvest and at times held a slender lead, but again could not quite keep with the stronger sides in the second half. By the end of that game Harvest had mercy ruled us as well.

The last encounter for the boys was against Wallaroo Mines, who fielded a young team this year, which was a good opportunity for our inexperienced basketballers to see a bit more court time and get a few of their own points on the board. We ended up mercy ruling Wallaroo Mines, giving both the boys and girls a win each to finish the day.

A big thank you to Tom Cockshell and Harrison Hatcher for umpiring. Thank you to Rachael Drogemuller for scoring and Penny Caulfield for coaching the girls when their game was at the same time as the boys.

We have had a busy start to the term in Japanese with the homestay, a festival to

celebrate Japanese culture, and lessons moving back into the Language Centre!

JAPANESE HOMESTAY

From Tuesday week 2 to Tuesday week 4, Moonta Area School

played host to ten Japanese high school students from Meiji

Nakano Hachioji High School near Tokyo. The 15 and 16 year old

visitors were here to experience our Australian country, school,

and family life. It was an amazing opportunity to learn from, and

share cultures whilst building international friendships. Our

visitors participated in an ESL program designed to help them

with their confidence in English speaking, interacted with our

students during breaks, our Mini Japanese Festival, and lessons

when they shadowed their Moonta buddies.

I would like to acknowledge and thank all staff, students, and

host families who contributed to the resounding success of our

recent Japanese homestay. This program doesn’t happen without

months of hard work and organization behind the scenes,

particular kudos to Tamra Stringer for making a big job so much

easier. I’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of Mrs Peters,

and her Senior Information Processing and Publishing class.

Taylor Bock, Kane Drewett, Melanie Feltus, Brandon Humphrys,

William Jolly, Baden Northey and Amy Rhodes produced a terrific

DVD for both our Japanese visitors and their Moonta host

families. Our visitors had a fantastic time, and that was down to

everyone’s collective efforts across the school, and it is most

appreciated.

If you are in Year 6 and above and keen to be involved in next

year’s homestay, please see Tamra or myself for a form and more

info! We are looking for expressions of interest for host families

now.

Lastly, a little plug for our ひらがなhi ra ga na

Ribbon Challenge! Now that we’re back in the Language Centre for our

lessons, practice sheets are readily available at the back of the classroom – let’s get practising! See me

when you’re ready to be tested!

Happy language learning everyone! Mrs Swan

P.S. WHAT’S ON IN JAPAN THIS MONTH?

Every year in Tokushima, from August 12-15th Awa Odori Festival, one of Japan's most

famous Bon festivals is held. Over a million people visit Tokushima every year to watch

and take part in the Awa Odori, a local folk dance set to traditional music. Awa dance is

said to be a 'fool's dance'. A well-known saying runs, "it's a fool who dances and a fool

who watches, so if both are fools, you may as well dance!". The atmosphere is

infectious and many thousands dance in the streets, giving the whole city center a real carnival atmosphere.

JAPANESE FESTIVAL…

On Tuesday 7th August Moonta’s R-6 students thoroughly

enjoyed a mini Japanese “matsuri” (festival) with our

homestay students and their MAS buddies running the show!

Our newly completed JP STEM balcony was the PERFECT

setting for students to come and try a variety of traditional

festival activities and games! A great time was had by all!

JAPANESE HOMESTAY: from the Buddy perspective…….

Jaida Tabb: My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of

hosting Kanako, our Japanese student. She got to explore our beautiful

beaches along Pt Hughes and Moonta Bay, Adelaide Zoo, a sugar overload

at 50sixone and frequent trips to Adelaide for all my sporting

commitments. She also got to be part of our family and experience Aussie

cuisine. The language barrier was a challenge but we got on thanks to

google translate. Overall, we really enjoyed our time with Kanako.

Emma Prout: I was nervous to meet Suzuka on the Tuesday night when

she arrived but once we had tea and asked her a few questions it was

good. I enjoyed taking Suzuka around to different places: Taste the

Yorke, Cafe Capellas, the footy oval, beach and the Adelaide trip to the

Wildlife Park and Haighs chocolate factory. It was great spending time

with Chloe Oxspring’s family and Kanaha having a pizza and BBQ nights.

We all enjoyed the Innes National Park trip together. Overall I found it a

great experience and I’ll keep in contact with Suzuka through Instagram.

Gabby Fawkes: I really enjoyed being part of the homestay. My favourite

part was having Kotomi join in our regular classes. After school we went

for milkshakes most days and hanging out at home was a lot of fun. Sitting

on the couch chatting and trying to work out what each other was trying

to say was hilarious.

Shae Van Duin: I had the best time hanging out and getting to know

Ramu. It was an amazing experience to have a Japanese girl stay at my

home. We got to do a lot of fun things like going to Flip Out in Adelaide.

Olivia Congdon: It was a great experience having Itsumi staying with us -

we learnt a lot about Japanese culture and Japanese teenagers! My

favourite thing about the homestay was the Adelaide excursion on the

Friday after they arrived. Next year it would be cool to have a group

event or a sleep over for all the students.

Bella Cini: I feel very privileged to have been able to be a buddy to a

Japanese student and show them our part of Australia. It was a really

grand experience as it gave me an amazing insight into Japanese culture

like the endless gift giving. They were all very kind and I made many

friendships over the two weeks, I hope to be a buddy again next year.
