    GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

INTRODUCTIONThis Jinny Beyer block-of-the-month quilt has been designed as a patchwork course for intermediate to advanced levelquilters. The blocks each month have been geared to teach a variety of basic skills and become more advanced as themonths progress. Quilters will build on the knowledge and skills they learn from each block until even the seemingly morecomplex patterns become easy to assemble. Included in the techniques that participants learn are rotary cutting, strippiecing, joining four corners, joining eight corners, paper piecing, setting in, working with curves and much more. Theblocks for this quilt can be constructed using a variety of the following methods of construction: hand piecing, machinepiecing, piecing with freezer paper templates, or piecing onto a foundation. The fabrics used in Moon Glow are all from theQuilters Palette by Jinny Beyer for RJR Fabrics. The shading of the colors produces a “moon glow” that gives thequilt a rich quality. Each of the compasses is named after the seas of the moon.

    GETTING STARTED

For machine piecing, test your 1/4" seam accuracy. To achieve accurate 1/4" seams, adjust machine marking orneedle position if necessary.Press seams in the direction that creates the least bulk and/or towards the darker fabric.

    ••

TEMPLATESAs printed, all templates include a 1/4" seam allowance.Dashed lines are sewing lines; solid lines are cutting lines.

For machine piecing, trace or photocopy template shapesfor each block. Templates may be transferred or glued totemplate plastic. For hand piecing, trace on the solid line to create templatesthat include the 1/4" seam allowance. Use the template todraw the sewing line, or include the seam allowances and trace on the solid lines. For freezer paper method, trace templates onto freezer paper using a freezer papertemplate technique. Trace and cut on the dashed lines.Several templates need to be reversed for tracing and/or cutting to complete theblocks, i.e. - A (normal) and AR (reversed). They are indicated on the templates andin the individual instructions. All templates should be placed on the wrong side of the fabric for tracing and/orcutting.Several of the template shapes are used in more than one block. If a template shapehas been used before, it will be noted in the individual block instructions.

Not all printers/copiers reproduce perfectly.Test print this page, and check that the Template SizeCheck below measures the correct size. This is criticalto ensuring that your pieces will fit together correctlyand your blocks will finish the correct size.

    Template Size Check

This box should measure2 inches square.

If the box does not measure 2",your templates/foundations willnot be the correct size.

If you are printing at home, besure your printer is set to print at100% with “no scaling”.

Pick your passion! This pattern includes templates formachine or hand piecing. There are also freezer paperfoundation pages and standard foundation piecing pages.Use which ever technique suits you best to accomplish thisbeautiful block!

HAND PIECINGMark the sewing line onto the wrong side of each fabric piece. In preparation for sewing, pin two fabric pieces together. To make sure the drawn lines areperfectly aligned, use pins at the beginning and end of the seam line. Also place pins atintervals along the seam line to help hold pieces together securely for stitching.Sew fabric pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions.Stitch on the seam line using a running stitch. To keep the thread from pulling, stitchadditional backstitches every couple of inches. Secure each end with a fastening stitch,i.e. knot or backstitch.

MACHINE PIECINGOn the wrong side of each fabric piece, mark 1/4" intersections at all corners. In preparation for sewing, pin two fabric pieces together. Use pins at the beginning and end of the seam line, pinningthrough the 1/4" intersections marked on both fabrics. To help hold pieces together securely for stitching, placepins along the seam line .Using the appropriate marking on your sewing machine to accomplish a 1/4" seam, stitchalong the seam line.Sew fabric pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions. For most seams you will sew from cut edge to cut edge. However, because many of theseblocks require set-in seams, care must be taken to determine when the seam should beended at the 1/4" intersection markings. If a pivot or set-in is needed at either end of theseam, it is best to begin and/or end the seam at the marked intersection, backstitching fora few stitches to secure the seam.

FREEZER PAPER PIECINGTrace and cut out freezer paper template pieces and press onto the wrong side of fabric.Cut out shapes, leaving 1/4" of fabric for seam allowance around each template shape. In preparation for sewing, pin two fabric pieces together. Use pins at the beginning andend of the seam line, pinning at the corners of the freezer paper templates on both piecesof fabric. To help hold pieces together securely for stitching, place pins along the seamline.Stitch along the edges of the freezer paper. Leave the freezer paper templates in placeuntil the block has been completed.Sew fabric pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions.

FOUNDATION PIECINGTrace or photocopy foundation pieces for each block.Cut a piece of fabric for each area on the foundation with a generous 1/4" seam allowancealong all sides.Place wrong side of #1 fabric on the wrong (unprinted) side of the foundation with 1/4"extending beyond the seam line between areas #1 and #2.

Using a slightly shorter stitch length than usual, sew on the printed line. Stitch severalstitches beyond the seam line at each end.Using a warm, dry iron, press fabric #2 completely to the side, being careful to avoid anypleats that will affect accuracy.Fold the foundation on the line for the next seam to be sewn. Using this fold as a guide, trim the fabric along the fold, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.Continue adding fabric pieces to the foundation by repeating these same steps until allnumbered areas have been covered with fabric.Cut off excess fabric by trimming 1/4" away from the outermost solid line along each edge.Place two pieced sections right sides together. Place pins at the beginning and end of theseam lines on both pieces.Sew on the line, stitching from cut edge to cut edge.Sew pieces together in the order indicated in the individual instructions.

Directions- Freezer Paper Foundation Method.Match Point = where seams intersect 1/4" from the edge (seamallowance).

Print copies of the freezer paper foundation pages onto the dullside of 8-1/2" x 11" freezer paper. Using paper cutting scissors, cut out each shape directly on the dashed lines. Be careful notto add any distance past those lines or your shapes will be toolarge.

AT THE IRONING BOARD: Place theshiny side of the corresponding freezerpaper shapes onto the wrong side of thefabrics. Space the shapes so there isplenty of room on all sides of each for a1/4" seam allowance. Using a hot, dryiron press the shiny side of the freezerpaper shapes onto the wrong side ofeach corresponding fabric. This willtemporarily bond the paper to the fabric.

AT THE CUTTING MAT: Do not mark the seam allowancesaround the paper shapes. Cut each shape out leaving anexact 1/4" seam allowance on all sides. This is accuratelydone with a square see-thru ruler with a clear 1/4" outeredge marking and rotary cutter. Use the template shapesfrom page 5 to trim the elongated points of the shapes. Thiswill make piecing much easier!

Sew the A, AR, C and CR shapes together. To help line upthe match points push a straight pin through the match pointon the CR foundation to the corresponding match point onthe A foundation. Carefully pin to secure. Repeat for both thestarting and the ending match points. Sew together using a1/4" seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning andending of each addition.

Leave the foundation papers attached to the shapes.Press the seam allowances in the direction indicatedby the arrows. Again, use a hot, dry iron. Press downwith out gliding the iron on the fabrics as much aspossible.

Sew the B shapes to the A units. Use straight pins to “pin point”the matches. Press.

Sew the AR units tothe remaining longside of the B shapes.Press.

Sew the units into twohalf blocks. Press.

Sew the half blockstogether forming oneSea of Nectar block.

When viewing from the back, the seam allowances should all be pressed in a clockwise direction. This has been an aid in making sharp points and accurate matches. If during the piecing processyou wish to remove some of the foundations remember this rule: Always leave the foundationsthat are on the outside of the units/block attached to the fabric for exterior support until piecingis complete. Any interior foundations (foundations that are sewn on all sides) can be removed ifneeded to make the best match of points/seams.

Remove all foundation papers. Press well without sliding the iron. Placing a cloth on top of theblock before pressing will help avoid striking a shine on bulky areas of the piecework.

Trim the outer edges of the block if needed to bring it to an 11-3/4" x 11-3/4" measurement.

Sew the frame squares and rectangles together Press.

Sew a rectangle to each side of the block. Press. Sew the square/rectangle strips to the top andbottom of the block. Press.

The block this month is very similar to Month 9, except that an additional piece has been added tothe smallest points. The octagon in the center utilizes the earlier skills of setting in a simple angle. Two of these blocks are required for the quilt. Templates A/AR and B/BR are reused from Month 8.

    Directions- Template method.

    Make templates.

Cut out fabric. If using foundation methoduse the Pre-Cutting Guide For Foundations.

Because the center of this block has set inseams, when sewing center units together, start and stop stitching at seam intersectionsat wide end of triangles. Not stitching into theseam allowance will allow for easier piecingat the pivot points along these seams.

Sew four identical units as shown.

Sew the units into two half blocks. Sew the halfblocks together forming one Sea of Ingenuity block.

Sew the frame squares and rectangles together

Sew a rectangle to each side of the block. Sew the square/rectanglestrips to the top and bottom of the block.

The last compass block in this series is the traditional Mariner’s Compass pattern. It has twice asmany points as the last four blocks. By paper piecing the block can be constructed with accuracy.Since the compass block sets into the background, this month’s block will also include a lesson onpiecing curves. By now you should have the knowledge and confidence to proceed with any block ofyour choice.Directions- Template method.

    Make templates. Cut fabric out.

Sew eight identical units as shown.

Because the center of this block has set-in seams, when sewingthe small triangles onto the octagon, start and stop stitching at all seam intersections. Not stitchinginto the seam allowance will allow for easier piecing at the pivot points along these seams.

Sew the units into two half blocks. Press.Fold each A fabric piece in half and matchthe center of the curved edge with the tip ofC on the completed quarter compass. Pin Asecurely in place along the curvebefore stitching.

Sew the half blocks together formingone Sea of Knowledge block.

Trace and cut a freezer papertemplate using the dashed line ofTemplate G.

    Press onto wrong side of 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" piece ofFabric 11.

Press seam allowance over edge of freezer paper. To completeblock, pin in place on center and applique in place.

Sew the frame squares and rectangles together Press. Sew arectangle to each side of the block. Press. Sew the square/rectangle strips to the top and bottomof the block. Press.

Because of the angles involved in the shorter points, this month’s block is a good lesson in handpiecing. Setting in of simple angles and a repeat of the lesson on sewing small points around anoctagon are the main lessons.Directions- Template method.

Make templates and/or foundations. Cut out fabric.

Sew four identical units as shown.

Because the center of this block has set in seams, when sewingthe small triangles onto the octagon, start and stop stitching atall seam intersections. Not stitching into the seam allowance willallow for easier piecing at the pivot points along these seams.

When attaching small triangles to the octagon, the side with thegrain line arrow is the side onto which the octagon is sewn.

Sew the units into two half blocks. Press. Sew the half blockstogether forming one Sea of Vapor block.

Sew the frame squares and rectangles together. Press.

Sew a rectangle to each side of the block. Press. Sew the square/rectangle strips to the top and bottom of the block. Press.

A slightly more complex compass block is made this month. Paper piecingmakes this easy to construct and ensures accurate size. Templates A, AR and B,BR are reused from Month 6.Directions- Template method.

    Make templates.

    Cut out fabric.

Sew the block center as shown. Pressthe seam allowances in the directionindicated by the arrows.

Sew four identical units as shown.

Sew the units into two half blocks. Press. Sew the half blocks together forming one Sea of Vaporblock.

Because the center of this block has set-in seams, when joining them to the compass points, startand stop stitching at the seam intersections on the center square. Not stitching into the seamallowance will allow for easier piecing at the pivot points along these seams.

Sew the frame squares and rectangles together.

Sew a rectangle to each side of the block. Sew the square/rectanglestrips to the top and bottom of the block.

The same number of points are used in this month’s block as in Month 6, 7, & 8, but now the pointsare split. This is a very easy block to do by the paper piecing method. It is also a follow-up lesson onjoining eight points successfully. Two of these blocks are required for the quilt. Templates A/ARand B/BR can be reused from Month 8.
