2 years - $551 year - $30

It’s an overused phrase but it’s true:Insanity is doing the same thing over andover again, but expecting differentresults.

And, on these terms, there’s no onecrazier in Canadian politics than Quebecseparatists.

The Scottish referendum might haveseemed close. But the polls consistentlytold us the “no” side would win and theydid – with 55.3% of the vote.

For others, this should be a cautionarytale. But this latest lost independence bidhasn’t stopped Quebec separatistpoliticians who flew across the pond toobserve the referendum from getting allexcited.

As Parti Quebecois MNA Martine Ouellettold QMI Agency: "At the beginning theYes side was polling at 30%. Theyfinished at 45%. The Yes side ran astructured and organized campaign, andwere incredibly positive. They also did agreat job of using social media to theiradvantage."

Don’t get your hopes up. A few tweetsaren’t going to fire up the Quebec youth– most care more about their futureeconomic well-being than Quebecnationalism. As we argued in Thursday’s editorial, regardless of outcome the Scottishmovement shouldn’t inspire Quebecseparatists. Even had it passed, theeconomic complications would havemade it more trouble than it was worth.

In fairness to the Scottish movement, they at least knew exactly what theywanted.

Here’s the question that appeared on theballot: “Should Scotland be anindependent country?”Pretty clear, isn’t it?

Here’s the 1995 Quebec referendumquestion: "Do you agree that Quebecshould become sovereign after havingmade a formal offer to Canada for a neweconomic and political partnership withinthe scope of the bill respecting the futureof Quebec and of the agreement signedon June 12, 1995?"

No one still really knows what thatmeans.

And Quebec’s separatists have been soflaky with such things over the years thatJean Chretien even had to pass a ClarityAct just to tell them not to talk with theirmouths full, so to speak.

The Scottish independence movementwas not a sign that Quebec should giveit another go. If they do, results will beeven more dismal for the separatists thanthey were in 1995.

Comparing and contrasting the past twoQuebec referendums on sovereigntywith Thursday’s Scottish independencereferendum and the one Catalonia isplanning in Spain for November providessome food for thought:

The question: That the Scottishreferendum question is simple and clear— six words: “Should Scotland be anindependent country? — should putpressure on Quebec sovereignists to besimilarly clear in any future referendumhere. Also, the fact that the question wasput to the British government beforehandfor its approval is also significant. It setsa precedent, for a role for the federalgovernment here, as in fact the federalClarity Act provides for. On the otherhand, Canada can’t ignore the fact thatBritain’s willingness to recognize asimple 50-per-plus-one majority willresonate in the international community, despite the Clarity Act’s more nuancedinsistence on “a clear majority” or “aclear expression of the will of thepopulation.”

It’s an entirely different story in Catalonia, the northeastern region of Spain thatincludes the city of Barcelona. Spainsays it will not recognize any referendumorganized by Catalonia. In fact, Sec. 92of the 1978 Spanish constitution saysreferendums are only valid if they arecalled by the king, proposed by theprime minister of the government andapproved by the Spanish parliament. Itshows that the right to secession issomething that varies, depending on thecountry. Although the U.S. Constitution issilent on secession rights, the U.S.Supreme Court has consistentlyinterpreted it to mean there is no suchright.

The economics: As Postmediacorrespondent Matthew Fisher and otherpolitical observers have pointed out, both the Yes and No sides in Scotland

agree that the principal reason why thereis any referendum at all in Scotland is thebelief that independence would giveScotland a lucrative share of North Seaoil wealth. In fact, there is somedifference of opinion as to how offshoreboundaries would be drawn in the eventof Scottish independence; theseboundaries affect natural-resourceownership rights. But the mostconventional way to determine themwould see Scotland get 90 per cent ofthe petroleum wealth that now flowsdirectly into the central United Kingdomtreasury.

The raises an interesting question. Whatwould happen if Quebec had 90 per centof Canada’s petro wealth? How wouldQuebecers vote in a referendum if,instead of receiving close to $10 billion infederal equalization payments (anamount equal to 10 per cent of the $100-billion provincial budget), Quebec wasexporting $10 billion in support to therest of the country?

In contrast to Scotland and Catalonia, there is no clear fiscal or economic basisfor separation in Quebec. In Catalonia,on the other hand, support for separationfrom Spain has risen from 20 per cent in2010 to 50 per cent now, as Spain hasfallen into a deep and long recession.Independence is seen in Catalonia as away to break out of recession. And whileCatalonia is prepared to accept its shareof Spanish debt, cries of “Spain isstealing from us” echo long-standingcries of “It’s Scotland’s oil” in Scotland.

Without a clear fiscal or economic triggerfor separation from Canada, somesovereignists in Quebec are sayingQuebec needs to clean up its balancesheet and adopt more business-friendlypolicies geared to generating morewealth before going back to voters with athird referendum. Parti Québécois MNAand leadership candidate Pierre KarlPéladeau personifies this point of view. But he’s not the only one. FrançoisLegault, a former PQ cabinet minister, leftthe PQ a few years ago to co-found theCoalition Avenir Québec, which hasexplicitly put the national question ondeep freeze in order to concentrate in theshort term on fiscal and economicchallenges. In the last spring’s Quebecelection campaign, Legault said hewould vote No in any referendum heldnow, but he couldn’t bring himself to sayhe is now a federalist. All he would say isQuebec needs a makeover and untilfiscal and economic conditions change,Quebec should leave these fundamentalconstitutional questions alone.(Reprinted Editorial: from Toronto Sun -first posted September 20, 2014)

BERLIN, Germany - President BenignoAquino III will be bringing home nearly$2.4 billion in investments from his 4-nation European trip.

Aquino said they had discussions witha total of 19 companies, adding that allthe business entities they talked topraised the economic performance ofthe Philippines.

"From our engagements in Europealone, we are expecting around 2.3billion dollars in investments in thesectors of manufacturing, energy, theIT-BPM sector, infrastructure, transport. Now, 'yung manufacturing, there is a --kung pwedeng ano 'yung atingpaniniwala na huwag mausog -- meronkaming tatrabahuhin bukas natalagang extra effort mag-lobby to setup manufacturing in the Philippines, really major," he said.

The investments are expected togenerate more than 55,000 jobs.

The President, meanwhile, expressedgratitude to the European Union forlifting the ban on Philippine carriers.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has alreadyresumed flights to London, and isnegotiating air agreements in France.

In France, the Philippine governmentsigned a new Air Service Agreement, and the Aquino administration's stepstaken for compliance to the 1978Standards of Training, Certification andWatchkeeping (STCW).

Aquino said the problem has beenunattended since 2006, requiring asingle agency to deal with SCTW in thePhilippines. He said under RepublicAct 10635, the agency tasked isMaritime Industry Authority (MARINA).

"Ang trabaho nito, now 'yung ipo-professionalize natin itong Standardsof Training, Certification andWatchkeeping monitoring system.Tapos ngayon gagawin natin 'yungconflict of interest para 'yung mgakasama sa industry sila rin ang nagsi-certify na name-meet 'yung standard. So 'yung company nila ayaw nila 'di bamay potential na conflict of interest, ngayon hiwalay na. ILLEGAL FISHING

Another issue that was dealt by Aquinoduring his European trip was the illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

The Philippines was issued by EU with ayellow card, indicating a warning.

Aquino said there was a 16-itemchecklist of things that the Philippineshas to comply with and fortunately, hesaid, 14 of the 16 have already beenmet. The remaining steps are theamendment to the Fisheries Code andthe other is manning of the newinspectors.

"So, I think we managed to convey thatwe are striving really hard to comply withall of these requirements so that ourfishing industry and the peoplebenefiting from the fishing industry willnot suffer a ban on exports from thePhilippines to the EU," said thePresident.

Aquino said the Philippine delegationalso made strides with the signing of amemorandum of understandingbetween École NationaleD'Administration (ENA), France's mostprominent school for public service.

The MOU is between ENA and theDevelopment Academy of thePhilippines, which will open up severalareas for academic exchange andcollaboration, specifically for moreexpertise, efficiency, andprofessionalism for civil servants.

Philippines and Germany also inked asocial security agreement, which entitlesFilipinos in Germany and theirdependents to the social securitybenefits of German nationals, and viceversa, Germans in the Philippines willalso be entitled of benefits.

"Parang we recognized each other... Werecognize and synchronize each otherSSS coverage. It will contribute toequality of treatment and eliminate dualcoverage amongst others," Aquino said.

LAGUNA DE BAY

During the trip in Brussels, Aquino saidhe was also able to clarify with theBelgians why his administration didaway with the contract with the Belgium-based company for the dredging ofLaguna Lake.

He said, during their talk with the PrimeMinister of the Kingdom of Belgium, thetopic was discussed in passing, notingthat the issue was already beforearbitration and the Philippinegovernment will be bound by the result.

He said they explained to the PrimeMinister the main contention that there isan 18.7-billion project, and basically, itwill remove silt from one portion of thelake and move it to another portion ofthe lake.

"There was no belligerence becauseagain, almost said in passing. So I thinkthey were able to say it, we were able torespond appropriately without causingany tension and conflict."

Get fit this FallFall is a super season for shaping upaccording to experts. “It is a great time tostart a fitness program because you'regoing to create good habits for theholiday season and the upcoming wintermonths,”says Justin Price, owner of apersonal training and wellnesscoaching. Chris Freytag, a fitnessinstructor and fitness expert, agrees."With the change of seasons comes arenewed time to rethink and restart."

Here are 10 ways to start making themost of the season.

1. Take advantage of the weather. Fallseason is a great time to exerciseoutdoors and enjoy cooler tempe-ratures, plus the crisp air and Fall foliagecan be a treat for the senses. Discoverpark trails andtake in some new scenery, whether you're walking, biking, or in-lineskating. Raking leaves or doing some falloutdoor yard work is also great way toget the heart pumping, and it's greatcalorie-burning too.

2. Fall is a great time to learn somethingnew. Take a dance lesson or exploreother classes offered at gyms during fallsuch as yoga and badminton. “Fall is theperfect time to gain new physical skills,”Price says, “because you burn fewercalories when you begin a new activity. Ifyou learn something new now, by nextsummer, you'll have mastered the skill—and you'll burn more calories doing it,just in time forswimsuit season.”

3. Get tips from YouTube. There aresome good exercises videos onYouTube that could help you getstarted such as Beginner's Home Muscle

Building and Cardio Workout by MikeChang.

4. Integrate exercise into your life suchas parking farther away from yourdestination, taking the stairs instead ofelevators and taking a walk during yourlunch break.

5. Rejuvenate yourself—your body, mindand spirit. Get a massage after your run.Learn to meditate.

Take an art class. Treat yourself not justwith exercise but other activities thatpromote wellness so you can feel goodphysically, mentally, emotionally, andspiritually.

6. Remember the 30-day rule. "'It takesabout four weeks for the body to adaptto lifestyle changes," says Price. That'swhy people who give up on their fitnessprograms tend to do so within the first 30days. "Try to stick with a program for amonth," Price says. "After a month, behavior patterns will have adapted andit will be much easier to stick with it afterthat."

7. Strive for the 3 Cs. Freytag callscommitment, convenience, andconsistency "the three Cs", and sayshaving all three will lead to a succes"Put in on the calendar, because lateralways turns into never."

Convenience means choosing a gymthat's close by, or an activity you can doat home, or a time when you're not likelyto be interrupted.

Finally, there's consistency. "I'd rathersee a brand-new client work out for 10minutes a day rather thanone hour every

month," Freytag says

8. Exercise family-style. Pick things youcan do as a family, like rock climbing, canoeing, or bowling to keep everyonestriving for better health and fitness. Some of the local parks even havefitness courses. You could run throughtogether. Set a family weekend to headto a new state park and check out thefoliage or go apple picking.

9. Add color to your diet. Fall is abountiful harvest of brightly coloredvegetables and fruits, rich inantioxidants and vitamins.Indulge.Squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, beans, avocados, broccoli, and cauliflower are all greatantioxidant-rich vegetables, packedwith vitamin A, vitamin C, andpotassium, says Price. "Antioxidants

help the body to combat free radicals inthe body," says Price, obtained througheverything from pollution in theenvironment to internal stress."Everything is cyclical," says Price, "so ifwe eat with the seasons, we're going tobe healthier.

10. Find your motivation. Discover whatyour individual goals are, whether it'slosing weight, strengthening andtoning, or preparing for a race or event, and choose something you'll enjoydoing and will be likely to keep up,whether it's walking or hiking with afriend, working with a trainer, or takingpart in a "boot camp" class. Creating achallenge for yourself will motivate you,and remember that anything worthhaving takes work. (Edited fromWebMD)

Dear EarthTalk: How is it that somefood purveyors are contributing to thedestruction of tropical rainforests byditching unhealthy “trans fats?” -- BillyS., Salem, OR

Most public health advocates applaudefforts by processed food producers, restaurants and fast food chains toget rid of so-called “trans fats”—partially hydrogenated oils added tofoods to improve texture and extendshelf life but which can aggravate

heart disease. In 2013 the U.S. Food& Drug Administration (FDA)proposed eliminating trans fatsaltogether, but it is unclear if andwhen such a change will take effect. In anticipation, many big trans fatbuyers have switched to palm oil, much of which comes from formertropical rainforest lands cleared foragricultural production acrossSoutheast Asia.

“The concern is that a lot ofcompanies will switch to palm oil inorder to reduce trans fats withoutthinking more broadly about thehealth and environmental implicationsof that,” says Bill Barclay, Policyand Research Director at the non-profit Rainforest Action Network(RAN).

Palm oil may be a good substitute fortrans fats in that it stays solid at roomtemperature and is therefore useful asa food additive in things like snackbars. But it isn’t much healthier: A2009 study by the federal AgriculturalResearch Service found that palm oil“would not be a good substitute fortrans fats by thefood industry”because consuming either type of fat

results in similar spikes in artery-clogging LDL (“bad”) cholesterol anda protein (apolipoprotein B) thatdistributes it throughout thebloodstream.

Meanwhile, the explosion in palm oiluse over the past few decades forbiofuels and as a food ingredient andadditive has wreaked havoc ontropical rainforest ecosystems acrossSoutheast Asia. Environmentalleaders are concerned that even moredemand for palm oil could push someendangered species—includingorangutans, Sumatran tigers andpygmy elephants—over the brink.“They're losing critical habitat thatthreatens their survival and that'slargely driven by palm oil expansion,”says RAN’s Barclay.

Higher carbon emissions are anotherdown side. According to the Union ofConcerned Scientists (UCS),thetropical peat soils that predominate in

Southeast Asia rainforests store hugeamounts of carbon.

Clearing and draining these fields tocreate palm oil plantations releasesthis carbon into the atmosphere.

Green groups continue to work withpalm oil producers and thegovernments that regulate them topromote more sustainable productionand processing and toughenstandards for conversion of land toagricultural use, but progress hasbeen slow. A recent commitment byfive of the world’s largest producersand traders of palm oil to stop clearing“critical forest areas” for one yearduring a study is a step in the rightdirection, but there’s no tellingwhether other producers will step uptheir own expansion efforts to fill thevoid, let alone what kind of ramped upproduction will happen when the studyiscomplete.

And while food scientists are workingon other alternatives to trans fats thatcould be greener and healthier, noneare as a cheap-to-produce and easy-to-process as palm oil, at least forapplicationsrequiring a food product

to sit on store shelves at roomtemperature. The best thing we asconsumers can do to keep our arteriesand our consciences clear is to dialback our consumption of foods thatinclude palm oil or any other trans fatalternatives. Indeed, there’s neverbeen a better time to put down thosepackaged baked goods andprocessed snacks altogether.

Dear EarthTalk: I thought that puttingethanol in our gas tanks was goinghelp fight climatechange, but latelyI’ve heard reports to the contrary. Canyou enlighten? -- Bill B., Hershey, PA

Ethanol and similar “biofuels” madefrom corn and other crops seem like agood idea given their potentialforreducing our carbon outputs as wellas our reliance on fossil fuels. Butrecent research has shown that thefederal government’s push to upproduction of corn-derived ethanol asa gasoline additive since 2007hasactually expanded our national carbonfootprint and contributed to a range ofother problems.

U.S. corn producers started rampingup ethanol production in 2007 as aresult of President George W.Bush’sRenewable Fuels Standard (RFS),which mandated an increase in thevolume of renewable fuel tobeblended into transportation fuel fromnine billion gallons in 2008 to 36 billionby 2022. Ethanol now makes up 10percent of the gasoline available atfilling stations.

But environmentalists now say that thepromise of ethanol has turned out tobe too good to be true. For one, thereis the issue of net energy produced.According to Cornell Universityecologist David Pimentel, growing andprocessing corn into a gallon ofethanol requires 131,000 BTUs ofenergy, but the resulting ethanolcontains only 77,000 BTUs. And sincefossil-fuel-powered equipment is usedto plant, harvest, process anddistribute ethanol, the numbers onlyget worse.

The non-profit Environmental WorkingGroup (EWG) warns that continuedproduction of corn ethanolis not only“worse for the climate than gasoline”but also bad for farmers, the land andconsumers: “It is now clear that thefederal corn ethanol mandate hasdriven up food prices, strainedagricultural markets, increasedcompetition for arable land andpromoted conversion of uncultivatedland to grow crops.”

Additionally, the group reports thatprevious estimates “dramaticallyunderestimated corn ethanol’sgreenhouse gas emissions by failingto account for changes in land use,”citing a 2012 study documentingthe conversion of eight million acres of

Midwestern grassland and wetlands tocorn fields for ethanol between 2008and 2011. “These land use changesresulted in annual emissions of 85million to 236million metric tons ofgreenhouse gases,” says EWG. “Inlight of these emissions, manyscientists now question theenvironmental benefit of so-calledbiofuels produced by converting foodcrops.”

Given the potential negative impactsof so-much corn-based ethanol, theU.S. Environmental ProtectionAgencyis reportedly weighing a proposal tocut the amount currently required bylaw to be blended into gasoline by1.39 billion gallons. If the federalgovernment decides to do this, itcould lower U.S. carbon emissions bysome three million tons—equivalent totaking 580,000 cars off the roads for a

year.Meanwhile, researchers are trying todevelop greener forms of ethanol, butnone are ready for market yet.

“The lifecycle emissions of ethanol‘from seed to tailpipe’ depend on howthe ethanol is made and what itismade from,” reports the Union ofConcerned Scientists (UCS). The bestethanol, they say, can produce asmuch as 90 percent fewer lifecycleemissions than gasoline, but the worstcan produce much more. So there stillmay be room for ethanol in our energyfuture, but not if we keep doing it theway we are now.

At nangyari angpinakamalaking perang naipasok ngMunting Bb. Pilipinas noongadministrasyon ni Bert bilang

presidente.

May bida, kontrabida, supporting roles at extra.

Atnangangampaniya silang walangbodyguard at walang dalang baril.

Technological Tidbitsby

Al Abdon

Buying a DSLR can be a daunting task.Different cameras are more suited todifferent types of shoots. The mostexpensive DSLR is not necessarily thebest camera for the job. Finding the rightDSLR for you can be as simple asthinking about the types of videos youwant to shoot and finding a camera thatbest supports those needs.

HD capable DSLRs have manyadvantages over traditional HDcamcorders. A DSLR with lens canweigh less than two pounds whereasmost camcorders with removable lensesare much heavier. The larger imagesensors in DSLRs offer greater detail, higher dynamic range and less noisethan even many high-end camcorders. There are also more lens options forDSLRs than for camcorders. It can takesome added accessories and/or a littlebit of time to get used to shooting videowith a DSLR, but the results are wellworth the effort. Let’s look at a fewfeatures that define these cameras whilealso illustrating why they differ fromtraditional camcorders.

Zoom and Focus

DSLR lenses lack the zoom rocker(controller) typically found on camcorderlenses. It can take some time gettingused to twisting a lens ring to zoom.Focus rings on lenses are often small, sousing a cinema style follow focus reallyhelps.

Audio

DSLRs don’t come with an externalmicrophone, and the on-board mic isusually sub-par for gathering good sound because it’s so close to thecamera’s control mechanism. DSLRsshare many audio challenges with smaller camcorders. The onboard micson DSLRs are not very directional like ashotgun mic. Some DSLRs have only an1/8-inch mic input and lack phantompower needed for professional shotgunmics. Many DSLRs can’t recorduncompressed audio which can be aproblem if you need to do a lot of filteringor effects in post. A great workaround forthis is to record audio to an externalrecorder and sync the recordings inpost.

Many users pair an audio recorder withtheir DSLR. External audio recordershave manual controls for record andheadphone levels which allow you toquickly and easily make adjustmentsunlike the controls on a DSLR which arein the menu somewhere. If you’reinterviewing someone at a party and allyou hear is them and not the party goingon behind them, it’s going to sound a

little funny. With your mic and externalrecorder picking up clean audio, you stillhave the on-camera mic that will pick upthat person and the party going onbehind them. You can mix the two inpost so that it sounds clear, yet natural.

Handheld DSLRs are really lightweightand small but the design ergonomicsmake them hard to keep steady. To helpstabilize the camera, you can attach acollapsed monopod to use as a grip oryou can attach the camera to a rig thatcan hold accessories like mics and lightsas well. Attaching an LCD viewfinder(eyepiece) can make it easier to seewhen shooting outdoors, and often willmake it easier to shoot from moreangles. harder with an APS-C or MicroFour Thirds sensor. You can increasethe focal length (size) of the lens used todecrease the depth of field, but you haveto have the camera further away to getthe same framing which can be difficult ifyou’re shooting in a small area.

If you’re shooting a football game, astage play, or any situation that youdon’t have freedom to get closer, a largedepth of field will allow you to keep moreof the action in focus. The larger depth offield makes it easier to keep your camerain focus as well. Here, a Micro FourThirds sensor with its larger depth offield would be better. With a full- frame orAPS-C sensor, you would have to movethe camera closer which might not bepossible or force you to decrease theaperture size which will make the imagedarker if you don’t adjust the ISO (whichcan make the image noisy).

The larger the image sensor, the lessvisible noise there will in the video itproduces. It's important to rememberthat the smaller the image sensor, the smaller and lighter the camera.

Micro Four Thirds cameras aretechnically not DSLRs at all. They don’thave mirrors that drop down to exposethe image sensor and take an image, and they don’t have optical viewfinders. But that difference only affects takingstillsbecause the mirror stays down on aDSLR when shooting video and theimage being shot is only viewablethrough theLCD screen.

Full Frame DSLRsCanon EOS 5D Mark lll

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is the followup to Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II which wasthe gold standard for HD-shootingDSLRs. The 5D Mark III features include22.3-megapixel sensor, 1080p shootingat 30, 25 and 24 fps, variable audio gaincontrol while recording, record times upto 29:59 minutes and a clean and

uncompressed HDMI output. The 5DMark III body has a retail price of $3,500.

Canon EOS 6D

Canon’s EOS 6D features a 20.2-megapixel full-frame image sensor. Itshares much of the same videofunctionality as the 5D Mark III such asframe rates, live manual audio controland maximum record time. The EOS 6Ddoes lack a clean HDMI out, but it doeshave built in Wi-Fi and GPS not found onthe 5D Mark III. The EOS 6D has a listprice of $2,000 making it a very cost-effective option for a full-frame DSLR.

Nikon D800

The Nikon D800 has an impressive 36.3-megapixel sensor that can take stills orvideo in FX format (35mm full-frame) orDX format (APS-C). The D800 features1080p shooting at 30 and 24 fps, audiopeaking display, headphone jack foraudio monitoring, linear PCM audio, aclean HDMI output, and both CF and SDcard slots. MSRP for the D800 is $3,000.

Nijon D600

Nikon’s D600 can take stills and video inFX and DX formats with its 24.3-megapixel sensor. It has the comparablevideo features of the D800 as listedabove, but trades the CF cardslot for a second, and has a retail priceof $2,100.

APS-C DSLRsCanon EOS 7D

The 18-megapixel sensor of the CanonEOS 7D still offers excellentperformance even though now it is a fewyears old. The EOS 7D's featuresinclude 1080p recording at 30, 25 and24 fps, manual audio control and amagnesium alloy body that is durableand resistant to water and dust. TheEOS 7D retails for $1,500.

Canon EOS Rebel T5i

The EOS Rebel T5i shares the same 18-megapixel sensor with the EOS 7D. Its1080p frame rates of 30, 25 and 24 aresupported as well as manual audioadjustment. Maximum record time is29:59 minutes. The Rebel T5i hasfeatures like Touch AF and Movie ServoAF for continuous focus tracking invideo mode that the EOS 7D lacks.Perhaps one of the most useful featuresof the Rebel T5i is its camcorder-like foldout LCD screen. It does lack a cleanHDMI out, but at$900 the Rebel T5i is an impressivecamera.

Canon Rebel T3i

The Rebel EOS T3i shares many of thesame features as the Rebel T5i as it wasreleased beforehand with a RebelEOS T4i. These older models can befound at a discount and might fit yourbudget better while still providing qualityvideo.

Nikon DS200

Nikon’s D5200 has a 24.1-megapixel DXsensor. It's features include 1080pshooting at 30, 25 and 24 fps,uncompressed audio recording, amaximum record time of 29:59 minutes,

a fold out LCD monitor and Mini HDMIoutput. The D5200 retails for $800 inblack but can also be purchased with alens kits in red or bronze body colors.

Nikon 3200

A 24-megapixel sensor drives Nikon’sentry level D3200 DSLR. It does haveuncompressed audio recording and1080p shooting at 30, 25 and 24 fps.Maximum video record time is 20minutes. The D3200 comes in red orblack and with a starting lens for $700.

Pentax K-30

The K-30 has a 16.3-megapixel APS-Csensor, and Pentax boasts that the bodyis fully water resistant. It has on-cameraimage stabilization, eliminating the needfor lenses with image stability whichmakes older, fully manual lenses easierto shoot with. The Pentax K-30 records1080p at 30 fps and retails for $700.

Micro Four Thirds DSLRsPanasonic LUMIX GH3

The LUMIX DMC-GH3 has a 16-megapixel image sensor and producesastounding video quality that rivals evensome full-frame DSLRs. The GH3features include 1080p recording at 60,30 and 24 fps, autofocus in videomode, timecode, mic input, Wi-Fi, 3-inchfold-out OLED, and a recordable time of240 minutes. All of this and morearecrammed into a body that’ssuprisingly small at 5.2-inches wide, 3.7-inches tall and 3.2-inches thick. With aretail price of $1,300, it’s easy to seewhy the GH3 is so popular.

Olympus OM-D E-M5

The OM-D E-M5 has a 16.3-megapixelsensor housed in a metal body. Itrecords 1080i at 60 fps and has built-inimage stabilization. The E-M5 is small at4.8-inches wide, 3.5-inches high and1.7-inches thick. The 3-inch LCDscreencovers almost the whole back ofthe camera. The E-M5 hasa magnesium-alloy and aluminum buildwith a SupersonicWave Filter system toreduce dust on the sensor, and costs$1,000 for the body alone.

Final Thoughts

Whether you need that film look of a full-frame sensor, the large depth of fieldand small size of a Micro Four Thirdssensor, or the flexibility and affordabilityof an APS-C sensor, there’s a DSLR builtfor what you shoot.

Derek Ramsay believes thatwhen it comes to his ongoing legalbattle, there’s light at the end of thetunnel.

“Life goes on, (this problem) isjust a little bump in the road… It’sdifficult, but I have to be strong,” saidhe in a recent interview.

The actor, who is fighting for his“right to be a father” to his 11-year-old son, is optimistic that he will beable to win his child’s affectionsomeday.

“In time, he will see and feel howmuch I love him,” a teary-eyedRamsay maintained. “I want him tolook at me the way I look at myfather.”

Turn of events

Ramsay admitted he was surprisedwith how his son acted towards himwhen they met at the Makati CityProsecutor’s Office last week.

The reunion, the actor narrated, was the 5th time he saw his childsince they were introduced in 2011.

“Before that, the last time I sawhim was months ago. That time, hecalled me dad and said that that wasthe best time of his life. I asked himabout it at the meeting and he said,‘No, I didn’t call you dad and I hate

you,’” he shared. It brought the actor pain hearing

his son insist that he wrote the lettersubmitted as evidence to the courtdescribing Ramsay as an “evilperson.”

“At first, I didn’t believe he (son)wrote that but when he said yes, Ikept my mouth shut the rest of themeeting,” he said.

Ramsay added that his parentsand sister were also “shocked” athow the 11-year-old acted towardshim, saying, “I introduced him to myfamily (before) and it was all good.”

Now, Ramsay only wishes thathis son will understand the wholesituation when he comes of age.Asked for his message to the kid,Ramsay said: “Please don’t closeyour doors on me, that’s all I’masking you.”

Keeping positive

The actor made clear that he is morethan willing to shoulder his child’seducation, even going far as toprovide him with a trust fund, asbeing asked by estranged wife MaryChristine Jolly in connection with thecase she filed against him for havingsupposedly violated Republic ActNo. 9262, known as the Anti-Violence

Against Women and Their ChildrenAct.

He questioned however, “Bakitkailangang sila (Jolly’s camp) angmay hawak ng pera, kung talagangang bata ang interes nila?”

Still, Ramsay has high hopes thathe and Jolly would reach an amicablesettlement soon.

“I want to be peaceful with her forthe sake of my son. I’m just doingwhat she requests but her requestskeep changing,” the actor claimed.

Despite Jolly’s harsh accusationsagainst him as stated in her affidavit,Ramsay sees no reason for him tospeak ill of the former model.

“Nirerespeto ko siya kasi ina siyang anak ko,” he said, adding, “I justhave to remain positive in life (evenwhen) a lot of people are trying tobring me down.’’

Game on

Despite the setback, Ramsaycontinues to keep himself busy withwork.

He will be the host of TV5’sreturning reality show “The AmazingRace Season 2,” which will feature 11teams.

“This responsibility is given tome, so I’ll give it 200%, I’ll work withpeople around me. I’m a team playerkaya halimbawa, kung umuulan sarace, nababasa sila, ’di akomagpapayong, sasamahan ko sila,”he said.

It’s something Marian Rivera hasfound out firsthand. With only fourmonths or so left before tying the knotwith Dingdong Dantes on Dec. 30, theactress is into the nitty-gritty of herspecial day – on top of her hectic workschedule.

“Mahirap pala mag-prepare (for awedding), hindi pala biro. Mabusisi…madugo,” she said in an interview.

Still, she is enjoying it becauseshe gets to spend more time with herfiance.

“Pag nag-wa-one-on-one kami niDong to finalize details, para kamingsira kasi nag-iiyakan kaming dalawa…kasi sobrang excited namin parehasna parang, after years, finally, eto natayo,” she shared.

The Kapuso Primetime Queensaid they already have a venue for thewedding reception but refused todivulge any detail save for herdescription that it is “malaking-malaki,hindi masyadong malapit sa church.”

Note that they will wed at theImmaculate Conception Cathedral inCubao, Quezon City.

EntourageDongYan, as their fans call them,

will have 20 pairs of principalsponsors. Their goal is to approach 10more pairs, among them BatangasGovernor Vilma Santos-Recto.

Without dishing out names,Marian shared that five Kapamilyaactors are invited as guests on theirbig day, adding, “Magugulat na langkayo na kaibigan ko sila.”

The only personality from her rivalnetwork that Marian confirmed to bepart of her big day was her “Kung FuDivas” co-star Ai Ai delas Alas, whomshe considers “totoong kaibigan ko sashowbiz.” Ai Ai will be one of herbridesmaids.

Smiling, Marian fondly shared howDingdong insisted that he wants to bein charge of the song for her weddingmarch.

“Sabi ni Dong, ‘may gusto akongi-dedicate sayong kanta na maririnigmo siya on the day itself, sa wedding.Sabi ko, ‘Ano bang motivation mo sa’kin, umiyak ako nang bongga?’ Peronakakatuwa kasi may surprise pa rinsiya para sa akin,” she related.

As for her gown, Marian admittedthat she is yet to decide between twoestablished designers. At the veryleast, the actress is certain that her

makeup will be done by BambbiFuentes.

NecessityMarian needs to attend a

confirmation (Kumpil) rite again beforeher wedding but she is notcomplaining.

“Nakumpilan na ako, ang problemkasi ’yung pinagkumpilan hindimaalala kung nasaan ’yung record ko.Eh mahigpit ang simbahan kayauulitin na lang,” she said.

Marian added that she need notbe baptized again because the churchalready recognized her baptism inSpain.

CarefulShe may be ready to bear a child

but Marian is cautious to not getpregnant before her wedding, notinghow she would not want to walk theaisle with a baby bump.

“Probinsiyana ako eh, gusto ko parin ’yung kinasal muna bago akomagkaanak,” she said. “Perosiyempre, kung ibibigay bakit hindi.”

HiatusThe Kapuso actress hopes to take

a leave from work second week ofDecember so she could have moretime to prepare for the nuptials.

For that, Marian needs to tape hershow in advance, especially since herGMA-7 dance show “MARIAN” willhave its second season.

“Actually, na-excite ako. SaSeason 2, ganun pa rin, mag-o-opening ako, sasayaw pa rin ako ngmga buwis-buhay dance prod ko.Pero ang maganda, may highlight siyakung saan may dance showdown‘yung mga artista.” a

Paano ka magbabagokung hindi mo naman alam angtotoo? ‘Pag nalaman mo na angkasaysayan natin, that’s the time napuwede na tayo magbago.”

Padilla aims to enlighten localfilm audiences on who Bonifacio is,based on the personal accounts ofhistorians and the hero’s relatives. He expressed disappointment aboutpast depictions of the Supremo.

PERSONALITYOF THE MONTH

by W. G. Quiambao

Families, friends and supporters ofAntonette Carbon shook their headsin disbelief when she placed fourth, out of five candidates, in the FAMASBb. Pilipinas pageant last April. Afterall, she did win one major award, Bestin Swimsuit, and she had competed inother pageants, not only locally butalso nationally and internationally inthe past.

"I can't do anything about it," saysCarbon, 22, when asked whathappened. "I've no control over thedecision. It happens. But theexperience I had with the Bb. Pilipinaspageant pushed me harder to preparefor the Miss Earth-Canada pageantlast August."

Carbon, a Dollard-des-Ormeauxresident, is a registered nursingassistant student at CDI College. "Myfirst beauty pageant competition wasthe FAMAS Bb. Pilipinas-Montreal in2008. I was actually pushed by mymother to join. Although I didn't wantto join, I'm glad I went through with it.It was the start of something good. "

After the FAMAS Bb. Pilipinas-Montreal in 2008, she competed in theMiss Earth-Canada in Montreal thefollowing year.

"Coming from a local pageant, thencompeting in a national pageant , itwas scary," Carbon said. "I was stillvery young. I was about 17 yeas old.Not fully experienced in the pageantryworld yet. It was very differentcompared to FAMAS Bb. Pilipinas. I'lltell you that. I felt so small comparedto the other girls because they weremore experienced , older than I was.But they were the sweetest that they

made things easier for me. "'

In 2011, after gaining a bit ofexperience and self confidence, shejoined the Miss Philippines of theWorld in Toronto, where she camesecond. She was also chosen as Oneof the Prettiest Filipinas. After theexperience, she admitted that shebegan to enjoy competing in thepageants. Two years later, she went toManila, Philippines to represent theFil-Canada community in the MissPhilippines Earth 2013, where she

won the Miss Congeniality and theMiss Global awards.

"I spent two most amazing months ofmy life in the Philippines ," enthusedCarbon. "Honestly, I didn't want tocome back to Canada . We were about48 girls there. I was the only one fromCanada, there was one from the WestCoast US and the rest from the co-candidates, especially the sisterhood Ihave with the Miss Fil-West USA andMiss Mabalacat City. I still keepcontact with them, and I miss them somuch everyday. I even learned a bit ofTagalog there (I can't speak inTagalog, only understand). Most of all,we're all passionate about changingthe environment. I'd a life-changingexperience . I've never realized howfortunate I was living here in Canadatill I saw the life there. I realized howmuch I was taking things for grantedhere."

Despite disappointing experience withFAMAS last April, she competed in theMiss Earth-Canada 2014, a muchbigger pageant held at Montrealairport Travelodge Hotel last month. She competed against fifteen othernon-Filipino candidates from all overCanada. She won the title of MissEarth-Quebec. She also won severalawards including one of the Top 7 inthe essay competition (Beauty for aCause), One of the Top 3 in the Talentcompetition,. In addition, she wasunanimously awarded the MissTravelodge Award, The award is givento the candidate which bestrepresented the hotel by charm andpersonality.

"Honestly, I couldn't believe it," shesaid. "I was inexperienced. But still, Iwas honored and blessed for receivingsuch an award."

During the competition, Carbon wasasked, "What would you do if you weresitting in front of Mother Earth?" Shebasically answered, "I'd ask for anapology on behalf of the peoplearound the world. We are the reason

why the earth is deteriorating moreand more. The people in today'ssociety are relying on the governmentand environmental organizations to dosomething, but there's just so much oreven so little they can do. In my eyes, the environment is of little prioritytoday to the Federal Canadiangovernment. What we don't realize isthat we can be, or should I say, we arethe start of a change. We don't need tostart off big. We can start off doing thelittle things. For example, we can helppreserving water by minimizing ourdaily water usage or taking the bus orriding a bike instead of driving a car.Water bottles (i.e Maya, Eska, etc.) arealso big problems in today'senvironment, so I strongly encourageusing those reusable bottles, canisterswith filters instead.

Carbon said that one of her favoritebeauty winners who inspires her isMary Jean Lastimosa, current MissPhilippines title holder . She earnedthe right to represent the country in theMiss Universe pageant this comingJanuary. Lastimora, one of the earlyfavorites in the upcoming MissUniverse competition, competedtwice in the Miss Philippines pageantrybefore clinching the coveted title. In2012, she placed as one of the Top 12,and in 2011, she came 2nd runner up.

Carbon, who is finishing her studies inMay of next year, plans on continuingher pageantry journey once done withschool She hopes, while crownedMiss Earth-Quebec, to inspireeveryone, especially the today'speople, to start taking action onenvironmental awareness.

With this trip and the discussionsmade with Spain, Belgium, France andGermany, he said there's a deeperappreciation of exactly what the issueis and who are involved.

"Meaning it's not just us and our bigbrother to the West that says them andVietnam, but even countries outsidethe region," Aquino said.

The President also expressed toleaders of the countries he visited, andalso to the leadership of EuropeanUnion, the profound gratitude of theFilipino nation for the help extended tothe Philippines when super typhoonHaiyan hit the country in November oflast year. (ABS-CBN News).
