In a big pond near a forest lived afrog. This pond was full of fishes. Some of these fishes were very wise. The frog made friends with two ofthe wise fish. He thought they kneweverything and he would ask for theirhelp in all matters. One day, as the three friends weretalking, some fishermen came andstood by the pond. "Let us bring ournets tomorrow and cast them in thepond", said one fisherman. "Yes I amsure we will be able to catch a lot offish", said the other. "Did you hearwhat the fisherman said? What willwe do now" the worried frog askedthe two wise fish."We heard them," laughed the firstfish. "But there is no need to beafraid. They were only planning tocast their nets. They may not reallycome." "Yes, you should not beafraid of something till it reallyhappens", said the frog. The wise fishlaughed and shook their head "Do not

be afraid, little frog!” saidthe first fish. "Even if thefishermen come with theirne ts, we will es capesomehow," said the fishtogether. They swam away in search offood. But the frog was still scared. Though he hadfaith in his friends he knew that thefishermen were much stronger.I am not as wise as the fish, thought the frog."They may be able to save themselves fromthe fishermen's nets but I shall not be able todo so; besides, my friends may not get thechance to help me when the time actuallycomes.” So he decided to do something tosave himself. He left the pond that very night and went toa safer place. The next day, as the sun rose, the fishermen came to the pond. They casttheir nets and caught every fish and frog.No one could escape.

There in the corner success stands,Taking in her hand a garland,To put it into necks of all,If aside you put your head, it will fall.

People who keep their head up high,To them this garland will easily fly.Meaning of it they are aware,And work hard ever to get there.

First they desire and then seek the powerIn their spirit and by their labourWhat ought be your goal,Select in life, first your role.

Team Members' Account of Trip to South Korea

Travel is not only an effective antidote to ennui, it is aprophylactic treatment of ethnocentrism. It lifts the veilof custom from outside world and exposes the latter toview with all its wonders, excitement and novelities. Most of the time, we live an entirely circumscribedexistence being slave to a dead routine. So, I too graspedthe opportunity to travel to Busan, South Korea forInternational Science Fair (KSASF). When my Biologyteacher, Mrs Shalini Kanchan approached me for the trip,my mother quickly agreed. My mother paid the advanceand I was selected for the trip. After 2 or 3 weeks of preparation of project, we wereready for the trip. The trip was scheduled from 7 Augustto 12 August. We were supposed to leave on 6th Augustfrom Lucknow to New Delhi by Shatabdi Express. As Iwas going abroad for the first time, I was elated andexcited. Our team consisted of 3 teachers and 6 studentdelegates. Among the delegates, there were 2 femaleteachers and a male teacher. The students were MananKumar of Rajendra Nagar, Pratul Hora and Shreya Singhof Kanpur Road Campus and Rishabh Singh and RiteshUphadhyay of Mahanagar Campus II of City MontessoriSchool. As we started our journey, I started feeling giddy but assoon as I got mixed up with the other delegates, I gotcomfortable. We reached New Delhi Railway Station at10 O' clock the same day. We spent the night in a guesthouse. Next day, we boarded the flight for Busan viaBangkok, Thailand. We reached Busan and the only word I could gasp outwas 'Dynamic Busan'. I was by enraptured by in itsnatural beauty. I just wondered how can a country be sobeautiful? At the airport, we boarded the bus sent byorganizers. We reached Korea Science Academy afterhalf an hour. It was a marvelous institute with advancedinfrastructure and huge compound. We were wellreceived by the hosts. After a tour of campus, we weretaken to the cafeteria for lunch. After having our lunch,we were allotted our rooms. They were quite spaciousand cozy. The rest of the day was spent on setting up our poster. We

rested for the night. The next day was our presentation infront of judges. We made a presentation on the topic'Biomass'. It went well and judges were pleased. In the evening we went to the local market of Nampdong. We bought many local souvenirs and ate at the Gangarestaurant, famous for its Indian Cuisine.Next, we were supposed to go on a field trip. We weretaken to Eulsukdo Island where the famous NakdongBird Sanctuary was situated. It had a number of exoticspecies of birds. Then we went to Hyundai beach. Wewere amazed to see the oceanic beauty. After anexhausting day, we returned to our lodging and sleptwell. The next day was the International Culture Night. EveryInternational participant was supposed to put forth theircultures in front of the audience. We (I, Pratul, Shreyaand Manan) performed on songs of 'Jai Ho' and 'Rang DeBasanti' while displaying a video of Indian folklore andcustoms. Our performance was quite appreciated by theaudience. We were captivated by the performance of theRussian, Japanese and Thai delegates. Then came the last day of the function. A closingceremony and a farewell party was organized for theparticipants. We were then awarded our participationcertificates.A number of games were organized at the closingceremony, which were hilarious. A small farewell partywas held after the ceremony. We were served quite exoticbeverages there. Then, along with my fellow delegates, Igave our new friends some gifts which we had broughtfrom India. It was hard to part with them, but we did itwith a hope to meet them again.Soon, we reached the end of our trip and we had to boardback for our trip to New Delhi via Bangkok and then anovernight train travel to Lucknow where we were wellreceived by our parents and Dr Jagdish Gandhi.Although, we were back in India, our heart alwayswanted to leap back to Korea. Though we exchangedemail ID's with other delegates and keep in touch, ourheart desires to meet them again.

NOVEMBER 2011 (6)CMS BULLETIN- POWER OF PEN 2011

Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one. —Malcolm Forbes

‘Power of Pen 2011’ Creative Writing Contest Organized by CMS Editorial Department

I looked out of the window andwas filled with the euphoria thatoverpowered me every time Ilooked at the Pacific Oceanglinting in the horizon. I was inHawai! I was part of a delegationwhich had come here to attend an

educational conference on Global Warming.I went down into the hall of our hotel for breakfast. Iwas just finishing my last sandwich when we hearda loud rumbling noise as if a thousand clouds werethundering together, and suddenly the groundbeneath us shook. "Crawl under this table." Ishouted as I threw myself under the breakfast table. All of us huddled under the small table and assuddenly as it had come, the quake was over…I got up and looked around the hall, or should I saywhat was left of it. Several people were injuredthough none was critical. Thankfully someonecalled 911 and the EMU's reached us within a fewminutes. On enquiring, I came to know that the volcanoKilauea had erupted with such force that besidesreleasing a vast ash cloud in the air, its shockwaveshad caused an earthquake as well as Tsunami.

I went outside and was shocked to see the conditionof the once glorious city of Honolulu. Severaldamaged buildings in the interior were beingevacuated while the EMU's had still not been ableto reach the coastal areas due to the Tsunami. The paramedics announced that they neededhelpers. I gladly volunteered. Along with someother volunteers, I climbed aboard a fire truckheading for the suburbs. The suburbs had become ruins. The sight washorrible. People covered in blood screaming forhelp, a mother shouting for her lost son and kidssobbing so quietly that nobody knew if they couldproduce sounds again. S ince we wereinexperienced, we weren't given any risky task. Wesimply carried stretchers and cleared debris. That night I returned to the relief camp as a dejectedperson. Despite the enormous technologicaladvances, we still can't protect ourselves fromnature's wrath. And the only thing we can do is tohelp others selflessly or to put it simply: as goodhuman beings.

It was just the start of theSummer Holidays and our schoolhad organized a picnic in thenearby forest area. We allgathered in the school premisesearly in the morning, from wherethe school bus took us to the

picnic spot in the nearby forest area. After leavingthe smooth tar road, our bus took a turn to a muddytrack going deeper into the forest, near a smallwaterfall and a bouncy bubbly stream. We all gotdown from the bus and had a nice lunch. Infact, I atefour sandwiches which made me a little drowsy andI went off to sleep under the cool shade of a tree.I might have slept off for some time, because whenI woke up I was surprised to see that there was noone there! My classmates and the bus had left, leaving me alone in the forest. I panicked! All theimages of wild animals which I have seen onDiscovery Channel flashed through my mind. What to do now? That was a million Rupeequestion, and I had no positive answer for that!Anyways, after calming myself I started to walktowards the forest. After walking for half an hour Irealized that I had gone deeper into the jungle. NowI was really lost. I tried to look at the brighter sidethe situation and started to admire the naturalbeauty of the jungle. Suddenly I realized that I wasstanding in the middle of glade in the forest. I was

mesmerized by the beauty of things around me thatI just could not hear the roar of the lion also! Roar ofthe lion!!! I turned around sharply to see a lionstanding by the other side of the stream and eyingme with a satanic look, as if he was looking at hisdinner.I gathered all my strength and started running in theopposite direction. I started climbing the first treethat came in my path. The lion tried to follow suitand was almost nipping my ankles. I just held onbut so did the lion. Suddenly I felt a soft hand on myshoulder. I turned around and saw a bear sittingnext to me on the same branch. The way these twoanimals looked at each other, I was sure that theywere "hand-in-glove" for the whole event. The bearkept on shaking me wildly when all of a sudden, thestrangest of things happened. The bear startedshouting to me in English "Minza get up, we areleaving now, the picnic is over." I woke up finallyand realized that I had slept through the whole ofthe day and my class teacher was trying to wake meup.I was so much overjoyed when I realized that it wasall a dream that I hugged her and said."Let's go Ma'am, I want to get back to a morehumane society, the jungle is for the animals."

Life is precious but short, therefore, we must live our life tothe fullest. This is only possible ifwe never stop learning. Likeeverybody else, I'm veryambitious and want to do well in

life. I want to live every moment of my life to thefullest. It has always been my heart's desire to servehumanity. I believe that service to man is service toGod. Ever since I was a kid, wherever I looked, Inoticed helpless people who were either sufferingfrom poverty, diseases, starvation etc. or from theloneliness because of lack of support system. I sawdestitute people in need of love and care.It was then that I decided to end these sufferings aswell as my agony on account of those misfortunes. My prime aim was targeted at serving humanity. Ithink that the best way to serve mankind and valuelife is to be a doctor. Therefore, I've decided tobecome a Brain surgeon. In the past few years I've noticed that many childrennowasdays indulge in criminal activities or areexploited by criminals. This is because of the lackof a wise leadership for children. Thus, I think thatthe best way to be an idol, an inspiration andsomeone to guide our future generations is to be a

teacher. There are numerous reasons for my choice.Firstly, 38 per cent of the people in India areilliterate. They are ignored and are controlled andmisled by superstitions. By becoming a teacher Iwill be able to eliminate ignorance andsuperstitions to some extent.Secondly, though I admit that teachers are not paidvery handsomely but I think that teaching is one ofthe noblest professions. It will enable me to servethe cause of education.Thirdly, being a teacher calls for missionary zealand determination in doing a work. I possess boththese qualities in ample measure. I have a suitableaptitude for this profession.I've chosen being a doctor as well as a teacher. Thiswill give me job satisfaction. After I attain fairlyadequate financial success, I'll open a hospital forpoor people. The admission to my hospital will befree of cost.I would also open a commune-consisting of aschool, an orphanage and an old age homeconnected together. I will be fulfilling a socialobligation which I feel is mandatory for a humanbeing. It will be fulfilling to me as a person.

My five predictions about my future

I always longed to visit Hawaii because I haveheard of its marvelous beaches, spectacularscenery and landscape and also of the friendlyand zealous people there. My dream came truewhen one day our class teacher announced thatsoon a delegation would be going to Hawaii

islands from our school and six representatives were to be selectedfor the delegation. My joy knew no bounds when my friend's andmy name was called out. I was too excited and thrilled. The teacherasked us to seek the permission of our parents and I was prettyconfident that my parents would allow me. After reaching home Ibursted into the kitchen and told that electrifying news to mymother. I thought that she would be happy but all my enthusiasmfizzled out when she refused to allow me to go as for her I was notthat big enough to manage things well and Hawaii Islands were toofar. I tried to make her understand that I am not the only one going.Five other children were also going along with the teacher and ourPrincipal but she looked anxious. At night when my father camehome she talked to him and he readily agreed. I was on cloud nineand could not control my emotions. My dream day arrived when I was going to leave for Hawaii. Mymother and father bade farewell to me and instructed me take careand to keep in touch. I bade them good bye and made my way to theplane. I found my seat and sat there. The flight was now going totake off and we were told to put on our seatbelts. The plane movedon the runway and after a few minutes the plane was flying up in theair. After a long journey we reached Hawaii. When we got off theplane I sensed the fragrance of ecstasy in the air. We reached thehotel, where we were warmly welcomed and garlanded. After thathearty welcome we went to our rooms and slept as the night hadfallen. The next day we went to see the beautiful capital of Hawaii. Theguide took us first to a beach. The beach was beautiful, the scenicbeauty of the beach mesmerized us. The water was gleaming andsparkling in the sun. We then went to a heritage park which was atleast 150 years old. We roamed about the park and the guide kepttelling us about the different kinds of flowers and explained to usthe things which the park was known for. The next day we had ourmaths Olympiad which went very well, then we were led to anearby island by the guide. It had a volcano which was dormant forabout 300 years. He was telling us about the volcano when I felt theground shaking. First I thought maybe I was mistaken buteverybody felt the same. The guide also became anxious and soonwe saw smoke arising from the vent. Many people were there onthe island and soon there was a commotion and people startedrushing here and there. And then suddenly with a loud roar thevolcano erupted and the lava popped out of the volcano. Our guidehad taken us to a safe place and asked us to stay there. I had longedto visit Hawaii because of its marvelous beaches, spectacularscenery and landscape and also because of the friendly peoplethere. We reached our hotel. Next morning when I woke up I saw thenewspaper, the news of the volcanic eruption was published and Iwas astonished to see my photograph, praising my bravery and theway I handled the situation. The Mayor was also impressed by mebecause despite being small I tried to do my best and saved manylives. I was invited by him and awarded. I felt so honoured andhappy to make my country proud. It was because of good teachingin my school and home.

Peo p le w ho c a r e(paren ts , doc to rs ,teachers, and others)want to know how tohelp their children bemore fit since there's a

lot of discussion these days about fitkids.Being fit is a way of saying a personeats well, gets a lot of physical activity(exercise), and has a healthy weight. If you're fit, your body works well, feelsgood, and can do all the things youwant to do, like run around with yourfriends.

"Our study showsthat some children, including veryyoung children, snack almostcontinuously throughout the day,"says Barry M. Popkin, PhD, aprofessor of nutrition at the Universityof North Carolina, US, in a newsrelease. "Such findings raiseconcerns that more children in thewor ld ar e mov ing toward adysfunctional eating pattern, one thatcan lead to unhealthy weight gain andobesity." While there are some stepsonly parents can take — such asserving healthy meals. But kids cantake charge, too, when it comes tohealth.

What does it feel liketo be full? Whenyou're eating, noticehow your body feelsa n d w h e n y o u rstomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too much because they don'tnotice when they need to stop eating. Eatingtoo much can make you feel uncomfortableand, over a period of time; can lead tounhealthy weight gain.

One job you have as a kid — andit's a fun one — is that you get to figure outwhich activities you like best. Not everyoneloves cricket or football. Maybe your passionis karate, or swimming, or dancing. Ask yourparents to help you do your favorite activitiesregularly. Find ways to be active every day.You might even write down a list of fun stuffto do, so you can refer to it when your momor dad says it's time to stop watching TV orplaying computer games!

You may have a favoritefood, but the best choice is to eat a variety. Ifyou eat different foods, you're more likely toget the nutrients your body needs. Taste newfoods and old ones you haven't tried for awhile. Variety is the spice of LIFE. Go forleast two fruits and three vegetables everyday.
