Q: Could Rinpoche explain about dedication? Is it like a cake? If you dedicate for countless callers, everyone only receives a fraction. A: It isn’t like that. You dedicate, for example, “For the benefit of all mother sentient beings, may I quickly attain enlightenment.” Without differentiating between sentient beings, you dedicate the merit to attain enlightenment. Whether you dedicate the merit to attain enlightenment for the benefit of one sentient being or for the benefit of countless sentient beings, the point is it’s for the benefit of attaining enlightenment. The result - enlightenment - is the same, it’s equal. whatever your objective is - for enlightenment, to have long life, to be free of sickness, whichever goal - whichever dedication your mind is more strongly inclined towards, it is towards that that the merit goes. Q: Sometimes lamas give what appear to be contradictory instructions. For example, one lama will tell you to do a particular practice and another lama will tell you not to do that practice. We are supposed to regard both of these gurus as enlightened beings. Could Rinpoche please instruct us on how this could happen, and what should we do? A: If the instruction does not accord with the Dharma, then it is to be abandoned. Although the Buddha stated to practice in accordance with the advice of the lama, the guru, it is in reference to a valid guru, whose instructions accord with the Dharma. So, in a situation where the instructions do not accord with the Dharma, you can excuse yourself by explaining without using any kind of harsh words. Also, another thing to take into account is to practice whatever is most beneficial to your mind. Q: What happens if we can’t tell whether or not the practice is actually in accord with the Dharma because our level is lower than that of the lamas involved? One lama says that this is a legitimate way to practice, and the other one says, “No, that’s wrong; that’s harmful.” A: Whatever is most beneficial to your mind. You make the choice, abandoning one or the other, according to whatever is most beneficial to your mind. And then, regarding even the instructions that are in accord with the Dharma, one has to take into account the appropriateness of the timing of those instructions. For example, you have in the life stories of the Buddha, in a previous life, he gave his head a thousand times in charity to sentient beings. So, let’s say you have two lamas: one guru is saying, “Yes, you should give your head in charity,” and the other is saying, “No, you should not give your body in charity.” Which instruction you follow is dependent upon your own capacity. If you have the capacity to give your body in chartiy without any sense of regret, then you follow the instruction of the lama who advises you to do that and you forsake the other instruction. Whereas if you do not have the capacity to give your body, without regret and pure in compassion, then you do not; you obey the instruction of the other lama who said not to give your body in charity, thus forsaking the first lama’s advice. From JayabalanOutgoing Center Director

Only when the walking cannot walk or the breathing suddenly cannot breathe that one suddenly remembers impermanence. No matter how many times I have recited the Lamrim prayer “....... This life is as impermanent as a water bubble; remember how quickly it decays and death comes.....” or “Magnifi cently glorious guru, please grant me blessings to remember impermanence and death from my heart”, I do not think I had realized the true meaning of impermanence until the 13th July 2005 when my karma as Centre Director of LDC ran out. The one primary reason given by Rinpoche was enough for me and I, and indeed all members of LDC, am and are grateful that our holy protecting Guru, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, out of his incredible kindness and in spite of His endless schedule, watches over us like a mother would over her only child. How truly blessed we all really are. By this article, I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart, all the members and friends of LDC who have made my years as CD of LDC one of the most meaningful and useful 2 years of my life. I truly thank all of you. There are so many of you to thank that it would be diffi cult to mention each one of you by name. However, I must thank all the outgoing Exco Members for their invaluable contribution to the smooth operation and growth of the Centre. Particularly, I must express a deep debt of gratitude to the outgoing SPC, Selina Foong and outgoing Secretary, Pek Chee Hen, both of whom, inspite of personal challenges never faltered in their service to LDC. I truly hope, your homes are more harmonious and peaceful now. I believe we have achieved much in the last 2 years and our fund position is healthy. However, along the way we have made many mistakes for which I beg all your collective forgiveness, especially for my mundane ignorance. I take this opportunity to wish the incoming CD Lillian Too and her committee the very best in all their future undertakings and endeavours. I have no doubt that LDC will soar higher under her leadership and guidance in the years to come. I urge all members of LDC to give Lillian and her team their full support so that LDC can truly become an “emergency” centre serving all sentient beings.

Love, Jaya

From Lilian TooIncoming Center Director

Dear friends,

I feel very inadequate … and wish to say that it is a great honour and opportunity to have been requested by most precious guru, Lama Zopa Rinpoche to take on this responsibility. I pray continuously for guidance to do this job with wisdom and compassion. I really hope that I am able to live up to Rinpoche’s expectations and am able to serve LDC and our members as well as the larger FPMT family, and the community in a way that will please Rinpoche’s holy mind. I am incredibly lucky to have Elsie shouldering part of the task with me as Deputy Director. She too was personally requested by Rinpoche to serve the center, and honestly I cannot begin to tell you what a gem she has been. The incoming EXCO comprise new members (who have replaced those who resigned) as well as previous members. For continuity the positions of Secretary and Treasurer are currently held by Stanley and Chung Han respectively, both members of the previous EXCO.

I am happy to inform you that Ven Osel and Ven Dechen, our in-house Sangha have agreed to serve as joint Spiritual coordinators of the center. We are fortunate to have them help us plan and coordinate our Dharma program. Already a comprehensive calendar of activities is being fi nalized for the coming 12 months starting with the visit to Malaysia of Ven. Choden Rinpoche this month. Please do call or visit the center to collect the most up to date program of teachings, initiations and pujas to be led and conducted by Rinpoche. We have also been informed that a new Geshe, who will probably join us in the New Year is being appointed for LDC. We will let you know more about this matter when we are able. In the meantime we are inviting a veteran monk from Kopan who is skilled in the different prayer rituals, hand mudras, altar arrangements and pujas etc to come and spend a month here giving tutorials on these very important aspects of our Dharma practice. Ven Tenzin Zopa has also accepted our invitation to give teachings at LDC in November & December following which he will lead an excursion to Kathmandu in mid December. We hope to be able to fi nalize details of these activities and will keep you informed. I would like to place on record our sincere thanks to the outgoing EXCO members and especially for the smooth transition of management.

ADVICE ON GURU DEVOTION PRACTICE A commentary on Guru Devotion will be given by Ven Choden Rinpoche in August. Please stay tuned for the exact dates and times of this very important commentary. The most important thing that determines how quickly you reach enlightenment is how strongly you need, rely upon and devote yourself to your guru - the stronger, the quicker.

It is your guru’s kindness that prevents you from falling into the lower realms, where you will suffer for an inconceivable amount of

time, and allows you to gain a higher rebirth. The better you understand suffering, the more you need to rely upon your guru; the better you understand how all of samsara-including the deva realm-is suffering in nature, the more you need, rely upon and devote yourself to your guru.

The more you suffer the more you need to rely upon and devote yourself to your guru. The more you learn the more you respectfully need your guru’s help and rely upon and devote yourself to your guru.

The greater you feel the need to attain enlightenment the more you see the need to rely upon and devote yourself completely to your guru.

The further you progress along the path the more you need to rely upon and devote yourself completely to your guru.

The greater you feel the extremely unbelievable suffering of sentient beings the more you feel how urgent it is to rely upon and devote yourself completely to your guru.

The more you practice tantra the more you need to rely upon and devote yourself completely to your guru.

The essence of your life is practicing pure guru devotion, realizing the incomparable kindness of your guru, who is kinder than anybody else.

Taken from a very small stack of blue Post-it notes with extremely illegible hand writing, some words only having one letter in them, handed by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to Ven. Holly Ansett with the comment that maybe they can be useful somewhere. Transcribed by Ven. Holly at Kachoe Dechen Ling, Aptos, CA, April 2005, and edited by Nick Ribush.

Words of Wisdom for August: Even if one misses out on one’s prayers and meditation, by working

for the guru or for others, there’s no regret because doing the prayersis supposed to be for others, to bring them to enlightenment.

Khenrinpoche’s visit...“Affadable, kind, wise, warm and compassion with an infectious laughter that lifts the spirits... these are some of the precious qualities of Khenrinpoche Lama Lhundrup, so endowed with wisdom and always smiling, it’s blissful to have come into contact with this precious guru. And so it was LDC’s collective good karma and the blessings of Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche that we are able to continuously receive a torrent of blessings with the arrival of high lamas and realized beings appearing at LDC to turn the wheel of dharma and blessing our mindstream.

With skilful means, Ven Khenrinpoche Lama Lhundrup talked about how we, city folks can practice Dharma everyday to subdue our delusions and bring benefi t to others. It

was heartening to note that Dharma can be practiced anywhere, anytime and not necessarily through sitting meditation alone. Although time was limited, Khenrinpoche was able to make a short trip to our precious “Land of Bodhichitta” - Yishin Rinchen Jang Sem Ling Center in Triang where we was greeted by hundreds of locals who received the oral transmission of Chenrezig’s mantra “ OM MANI PADME HUNG”.

To mark the end of his visit, LDC held a thanksgiving dinner, with plenty of food and drinks of course, which we offered to the Triple Gem before we partook. And in his usual accommodating manner, Ven Khenrinpoche offered advises to those who seek his wisdom and blesses those who seek his blessings. How wonderful! Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice!

‘Blissful’ Nyung Nya Retreat Dawns in TriangVen Munsel led a 3 day Nyung Nya retreat in the Land of Bodhichitta ‘Yishin Rinchen Jang Sem Ling’ (JSL) Center in Triang recently. Kieren Lim shares with Shabda readers his ‘blissful’ experience, of bugs, of sleepless nights water shortage, amongst other observations.

“Oh we must do a retreat at Triang, especially now that Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche has just blessed, energized JSL, it would just be wasted… so wasted if we do not keep it going!” laments Ven Munsel…..and so with that, the wheels of Dharma were set in motion and the causes and conditions came together for LDC to hold its fi rstt Nyung Nya retreat for 2005!

When I fi rst heard that we would be holding a Nyung Nya, I rejoiced at the chance to be able to purify negative karma, but somehow as the date drew nearer, there was some resistance, I was having second thoughts… Negative thoughts screamed in my head…” It will be so tiring, you’ll get headaches, will you be able to even prostrate at all throughout the 3 days?” “What about the thirst that will probably ‘kill’ you in the last session?” I was also discouraged to hear that we’ll be doing a 8 session Nyung Nya instead of our usual 7 sessions. How was I to survive this? But it was already too late…I had taken leave and since there will be people who would depend on me for transportation, it wasn’t just my decision anymore. Somehow I thought of impermanence and how short our lives can be and if there were any practices that we should engage immediately, it would have to be to purify our negativities and defi nitely Nyung Nya is one of these practices.

Revealed directly by Avalokiteshrava (Chenrezig – Buddha of Compassion or ‘Kuan Yin’ to some) to Bhikshuni Lakshmi, a renunciate nun who suffered from leprosy and subsequently cured following this advice, the Nyung Nya is a lower tantra or Kriya tantra set of practices that involves 8 sessions of prostrations, recitations of

praises and mantras to purify negative actions of body, speech and mind. There is also a set of vows to abstain from food, beverage and complete silence on the 2nd and last session on the last day. As Lama Zopa Rinpoche says, “If done correctly and with devotion, one would be able to remove eons of negative karma, never fall to the lower realms and create the cause for enlightenment for oneself and liberate other sentient beings”.

And so, with about 26 people who must have been inspired by this beautiful aspiration, we trudged and made our way to the Land of Bodhichitta, Jang Sem Ling (JSL) on Friday night. It would be our last night to enjoy samsaric ‘bliss’ before taking vows the next day and since we had not had dinner, a group of us had dinner in the small town of Triang. Dinner never tasted that good!

Bugs must have taken over our beautiful gompa at JSL…there were ants, moths, fl ies, small insects, crickets everywhere. They must be hungry for dharma too, I thought. I slept like a baby the fi rst night. Based on experience, if one sleeps well and paces

the sessions reasonably without over-exertion, it is possible to complete all the sets with relative ease. Still I was worried, but I made a prayer to the imposing but smiling Lama Tsongkhapa in front of me to give me the strength to complete the Nyung Nya.

We woke up at 4 am the fi rst day and although water supply would prove to be challenging for the next few days, it was a relatively easy session although I felt tongue tied after the long sessions of mantra recitations and my legs were aching from the hundreds of prostrations we had been doing. Lunch at 12 pm was delicious, made even more delectable because it would be our last meal before we took on the vows to abstain from eating in the next 36 hours.

The second night was tiring and there were times when I felt I needed to nod off but a quick cold shower was suffi cient to jolt me back into action. So, there we were….a

sparse sea of people doing unsynchronized prostrations. It was beautiful to see so much effort and determination in the practices of others. I did not sleep on the second night…. the mind was alert but the body aches. I thought of the sufferings of others in the 3 lower realms and reminded myself that what I am experiencing now can’t even be compared to what they are going through and with that I found some strength and faith to complete my practice.

I thought the last session would be the toughest but I think my prayers must have worked as I found strength to complete the last session, prostrations and all! A few of us were watching earnestly for the appearance of fi rst ray of light in the darkness that looms outside for that would the sign for us to break our fast and when it fi nally did….we had a great breakfast, watching the sun shining against the golden silhoulette of the 2 duru deers against the morning skies. It was beautiful and it made

me realize how wonderful it is to be born human and how wonderful it was that we had the opportunity to purify our negative karma before death comes! I survived my 3rd Nyung Nya… so will I be going for my 4th, 5th, 6th ? Ask me the next time you see me………

Ven. Munsel’s teaching & puja “I am serious, I kid you not!….” * snap snap fi ngers * were heard over the course of the whole month of June and July when Ven Munsel took to the teaching cushion at LDC, much to an appreciative audience who were charmed and inspired by the energy, enthusiasm and devotion of a lovely nun who works untiringly in the service of the guru.

Ven Munsel, amuses, charms, cajoles and inspires one to practice with fi rm conviction, devotion and in the process, endears herself to all who were present with her honest and sometimes amusing personal anecdotes of a life that began from a lay person with strong attachment to Mikimoto pearls to now, a practicing nun for the last 25 years who has devoted her life to dharma and in the service of the holy guru.

Precious teachings were dispensed with such aplomb enthusiasm we have had sessions where jewels, precious stones, beads and pearls were spilling from our practice of offering the mandala, made out of baking steel pans and colored beads from Macy’s! These teaching sessions were always made interesting, lively with practical practices that can be employed immediately to create extensive merits! Sounds of beads jumping from make shift mandala sets were heard everywhere, making for a very lively, interesting session.

Interspersing her teachings with precious advises she receives from Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Ven Munsel shares and persuades us to do the same so our practices do not become as she puts it “….’blah, blah, blah practices…not merely words that come out from our recitation and actions but practices that creates extensive benefits and merits immediately! “. We were also blessed to have received teachings on how to offer tea offerings to the protectors to clear obstacles to our practices and various other practices that enrich our dharma experiences as students walking the path.

Finding time in her busy schedule, Ven Munsel had also led a 3 day Nyung Nya retreat at Yishin Rinchen Jangsem Ling retreat center in Triang. (Please see our other article on the Nyung Nya experience) and gave teachings in our new FPMT Penang Center over the course of the past 2 months.

If in the past pujas in LDC were a quiet affair, the gompa now comes alive on puja days in LDC….A sea of swinging bells, damarus (and even a drum) now ring forth, bringing with it re-newed energy, thanks to Venerable’s guidance.

We were also awed and moved to hear Ven Munsel’s chanting of ‘Calling the Lama from Afar’, truly inspires and moves one to practice guru devotion.

So, it has been a wonderful 2 months of bliss with Ven Munsel and it is almost with a certain sadness that we have to bid farewell to this wonderful teacher who came into LDC from the kindness of our precious guru. Thank you Ven Munsel-la…please come back soon and we’ll definitely miss “ I am serious, I kid you not “ teachings!

From Daniel - Penang- about Ven.MunselLast month, July, Chokyi Gyaltsen Centre in Penang was very lucky to haveVen Thubten Munsel with us for two weekend visits. Prior to Ven Munsel’s arrival, I had been informed that “Ven Munsel is quite active and would like to have many dharma activities”, but we were not told that she is super active.

Ven Munsel arrived Penang on 1 July, Friday morning, after 25 years of missing in action, - the rest is history. 1 July happened to be a tsog night, and therefore CGC held our first guru puja at 8pm. A lot of us thought that it was going to be a two-hours puja, but Ven Munsel brought with her the quality of our precious guru - we ended our guru puja at 2am the next morning. By the way, at the

end of the puja, one of our membersapproached Ven Munsel and gave her his watch :-) it was sweet :-)

It was a detailed commentary plus puja, that night. When I looked at my watch (obviously Ven Munsel didn’t have her watch yet), it was almost 10pm, and I suspected a lot of people would be leaving. In fact, Ven Munsel had been telling them to leave if they would like to. What amazed me was that most people stayed and completed the puja till 2am - everyone seemed to have forgotten about the time except me. I still can recall that most people were putting 123.4% concentration - it wasn’t an easy job for many beginners here to understand - it is like listening to the whole path to enlightenment in 6 hours. Despite all the backache, leg-ache, eye-ache, shoulder-ache and headache, all of us really enjoyed the teachings that night - it was really awesome, sweet, and beyond ...... no no no, I mean it, I seriously mean it.

On her second trip to Penang on 14 July, it happened to be a Tara puja night. We started at 8pm, probably because of her new watch, we managed to finish the puja a few minutes after midnight.

Over her two visits to the Penang Centre, we went through a lot of things, hopefully, some of us can still remember a bit. We went through Lam Rim meditations, Meditation on Lama Tsongkhapa/Shakyamuni Buddha, mandala offering, commentary on taking refuge and precepts, two guru pujas, one tara puja, lam rim discussion on relying on spiritual master, guru devotion.

The experience with Ven Munsel was sweet, awesome and beyond. We definitely hope to have her to visit CGC more often, and not every 25 years.......
