I am pleased to announce that we have hired a new Director of Bell
Choirs. Nick Bonaccio has agreed to serve
on our Bethany music staff. We will wel-
come Nick at all three of our worship services
on Sunday, August 28.
Nick has a wealth of musical experience. He
moved to Madison to serve as a percussionist
for the Madison Symphony Orchestra, in
which he was just granted tenure after a
year’s service. He also has experience with
the Madison Opera Orchestra, the Vermont
Symphony Orchestra, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the DePaul
Symphony Orchestra, and the Eastman Philharmonica.
He is a 2014 graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester
New York, with a Bachelor of Music in Applied Percussion. Since
then, he has also been working toward a graduate degree in Percus-
sion Performance at the DePaul University School of Music in Chi-
cago. He worked for the Percussion Department at DePaul as a
Graduate Assistant, and was responsible for coordinating schedul-
ing for seven music faculty and a couple dozen students.
Nick has conducted numerous musical groups over the last several
years, has experience as a musical arranger, and has worked with
handbells as a percussionist. His favorite hobby is refurbishing and
restoring musical instruments, and so he even knows how to main-
tain and repair handbells.
Nick grew up in an active church-going family, and the music of the
church was what stirred in him a passion for music. He has heard
lots of good things about Bethany’s music ministry, including from
his good friend Paul Litterio (our previous director, who just moved
to Belgium). Nick keeps in touch with Paul, and will be able to give
us updates on how Paul is doing.
You will find Nick to be very personable, entertaining, and highly
competent. Come meet him before or after worship on August 28.
And maybe this is the year for you or your children to become in-
volved in the Carillons or the Children’s Bell Choir. Rehearsals start
in September. Welcome Nick!
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Greg

heard the joyful songs or laughter coming from the classrooms? If you've ever wondered what Sunday School is all about and
what it means to be a volunteer, now is your chance to learn! Children's Ministries will be hosting the Adult Enrichment Fo-

September 18 Youth Mission Trip presented by Brigit Parlow and members of the Youth Mission Trip Group
The Bethany High School Mission Team will be presenting a slide show of photos and stories to share with the congregation
during the adult forum hour on September 18th. We traveled to Avery County, North Carolina with Appalachia Service Pro-
ject. This is the second year we have worked with ASP, and we had a great week! We did the same type of work - vinyl siding
on a trailer home as part of a "hug" to make it warmer, safer and drier. After our week of work we traveled to Asheville, NC
for a day of recreation at the Biltmore Estate. Please join us to share the pictures, the stories, the fun and the truly meaning-
ful experience we had this summer working with ASP.
September 25 Modern Nuclear Energy presented by Louis Chapdelaine
Today's energy market is facing incredible challenges to add more grid capacity, increase energy efficiency, and perhaps most
importantly to generate power using cleaner sources that reduce carbon dioxide emissions to combat global climate change.
While renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydro power have a place, they have limitations that require another
source of energy to be used for energy generation. Nuclear energy has been employed for 50 years for this purpose, and is
ideally suited to replace coal power plants and even some natural gas for energy generation. Nuclear technology has under-
gone some vast improvements in this time, and most people are unaware of how the technology works or what it can do. This
talk will help to answer these questions, and perhaps make clear why nuclear energy is an important part of our energy
portfolio.

The book for discussion is The Road to Character by David Brooks.
With wisdom, humor, curiosity, and sharp in-
sights Brooks focuses on the deeper values that
should inform our lives. Responding to what he
calls the culture of the Big Me, which empha-
sizes external success, Brooks challenges us, and
himself, to rebalance the scales between our
“resume virtues” — achieving wealth, fame, and
status — and our “eulogy virtues,” those that
exist at the core of our being: kindness, bravery,
honesty, or faithfulness, focusing on what kind
of relationships we have formed.
All are welcome to join us for a fun and provocative discussion.

BLOCK PARTY & PICNIC

BLOCK PARTY & PICNIC
The Bethany UMC high school youth mission team has completed their 2016 Appalachian Service Project to Avery County in North Carolina!
We had an awesome trip! I cannot say enough good things.
Our group of 9 people worked as a crew together to continue work on a trailer home “HUG” which involves foam insulation wrap, metal skirt-
ing, vinyl siding, and rolled roof. We worked primarily on the vinyl siding while we were there, and also some interior work with a tiled
kitchen floor and tearing out an old bedroom ceiling and replacing it with new drywall.
Thanks to all who participated, and especially to the families and members of our Bethany congregation for their constant support, love and
prayers for our youth ministry. ASP makes a big difference in the lives of many people living in Appalachia, and I hope that you can see that
it also makes a difference in the lives of our youth as well. We appreciate it very much!
Please join the youth and adults on Sunday, September 18th for our Youth led Worship services (9 & 11 o’clock) and for the Adult Forum at
10:00 am for the slide show and interesting stories from the trip.

ANNOUNCEMENTS GETTING TO KNOW YOU – DINNER BY DESIGN
Bethany is continuing a fellowship opportunity begun in 2012 called
“Dinner by Design.” Groups of ap-
proximately 8 people (with a desig-
nated “convener” who will facilitate
the first gathering) will decide what
they want to do (eat out or in or
play games, etc.) and where and
how often they want to meet. After
indicating your interests on the sign-
up sheet located in the Narthax, you’ll be matched with others who
share those interests. New groups will be formed in October. Could
this be for you?
There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex or just call the church office at
238-6381. If you participated this last year you do not need to sign
up again unless you would like to try a new group.
MADISON PREMIERE OF FREUD’S LAST SESSION
The Upper House will host the nationally acclaimed play, Freud's Last
Session, on Friday,September 30 at 7:00 pm. Steve Koehler (Guys on
Ice, Children's Theater of Madison's To Kill a Mockingbird) and Alan
Atwood (known for his national one man tours) star in this riveting
play by Mark St. Germain.
Set in Freud's London home,
on the day England entered
WWII, Freud's Last Session is
an imaginary meeting be-
tween Sigmund Freud, the
"father of psychotherapy,"
and C. S. Lewis, Christian
apologist.
Steve Koehler as C. S. Lewis and
Alan Atwood as Freud in Freud's Last Session
Freud's Last Session is a hard-hitting game of verbal and intellectual
chess, with both Lewis and Freud bandying wits, beliefs and de-
sires. Assisted suicide, the after life, and the power of myth enter into
the conversation. Even as they debate, Freud is tortured by the excru-
ciating pain of his oral cancer which evokes a compassion in Lewis,
deepening a bond already begun with the men's shared humor.
Throughout the tough exchange is woven a lightness of nuance and
comic moments, balancing this intense and provocative drama.
Tickets are $19 for adults / $10 for students (with ID, middle school -
college) and $15 for seniors 65+ and groups of 8 or more.
The performance is at Upper House, 365 E. Campus Mall, Suite 200,
Madison, Wisconsin, 53715.
For tickets and more information, contact: www.freudtickets.com or
www.upperhouse.org or call 262-781-1235

AM Yoga Has a New Teacher
Start your day with a relaxing yet invigorating yoga class. Bethany

Beatles went to India.” Steve in addition brings to the mat a back-
ground in massage therapy. He is excited for the opportunity to
teach this gentle morning class. Questions or suggestions, contact
Steve at 608-238-2444 or [email protected]
PM Yoga With a New Twist
If you are interested in doing yoga after work or before you settle in
for the evening, this class is for you. Enter. Sit. Pause. Stretch. Re-
lax deeply. This is the order of a typical Tuesday evening yoga
class. New, starting in September, the last Tuesday night class of the
month will all be done in a chair. Chair yoga! This class is for you if
getting up and down off the floor is difficult, but you still want to
increase your flexibility and strength. If you have any questions

OUTREACH NEWS
Simple Gifts for August — “Africa University” Simple gift offerings during September will back the Africa University Fund.
It was more than three decades ago that African bishops of The United Methodist Church surveyed the
emerging socio-economic and political needs in their countries and called upon the church to invest in
higher education in Africa. The United Methodist Church worldwide ultimately responded with “a university
for all of Africa.”
In January 1992, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe issued the Africa University Charter by official
proclamation. Today, we’re still investing in Zimbabwe’s first private university for young men and women
from all over Africa. The university, which has more than 1,200 students from 22 African countries, is located
just northwest of Mutare, Zimbabwe’s fourth-largest city.
These students and promising leaders attending Africa University are being given the tools and knowledge to
transform their content through a range of programs that include: agriculture and natural resources; educa-
tion; health sciences; humanities and social sciences; management and administration; and theology. In addition, the Institute of Peace, Lead-
ership and Governance offers postgraduate diplomas and master’s programs.
Teaching at Africa University emphasizes the practical application of knowledge to alleviate poverty, build peace and stability, and drive devel-
opment. Students leave Africa University with the tools and know-how to make significant contributions to their nations.
Simple gifts can be made by placing loose coins in the offering plates, or by putting cash or a check in mission envelopes. Please give gener-
ously, as your support of the Africa University Fund will make a difference in real and relevant ways.
