Growing up with a father who was an Anglican priest, Christmas was naturally a very big deal in my house. Through December, he would be absorbed in

a frenetic round of services, celebrations, and parties. Our house would be a mess of decorations and cards, with gifts from well-wishers cluttering the front hall.

On Christmas Eve, he would lead a midnight mass and then wake up early on Christmas morning to do

four more services before, as a family, we would go to an old people’s care home to help with the serving of

lunch. In the mid-afternoon, we would eat our own meal, and finally, with my father now falling asleep, our

little family would exchange presents. For my brother and me, the wait to rip open our gifts felt unbearable.

We had been watching the pile of brightly wrapped presents under the tree with mounting and sometimes

hysterical expectations for weeks. Later we would

compare notes with luckier friends at school and nurse minor grievances that we lived in a world where our

giddy excitement had to wait for adult priorities.

My father passed away a few years ago. I miss him, especially at this time of year. His work was always

his priority; over time we learned to make our peace with that. He and I didn’t always agree, of course, and,

as we get older and become some new version of our father and mother, I am conscious of when I try to

be a different kind of parent. Even so, I learned from him that so often giving is much more enriching than

receiving. And I understood that actually, we were very lucky as a family. Perhaps having to wait to open

one’s gifts wasn’t the greatest hardship of all! My father tried to teach me that with our fortune there came a

responsibility to give back to others.

In this spirit, I am delighted to let you know that this year, our community responded with more generosity than ever to our December ‘Stuff-the-Bus’ campaign.

This supports an impoverished Romanian village community, Berceni, that is so much less fortunate

than us. We had over seven hundred donations, which is wonderful. AISB is a privileged community. I am so pleased to see that there are many student and parent

initiatives to help our wider community. There is always more that we can do.

I wish you all a very happy winter holiday. Enjoy time with your families and your personal traditions. We look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed and

ready to go in the New Year.

ELC WINTER CONCERT

On Wednesday, December 11, the ELC resonated with festive songs that brought the holiday cheer to all of us. The children from all grade levels joined in singing and dancing alongside their parents and enjoyed the wonder of this time of year together. Happy holidays to everyone!

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The CCA department would like to wish all AISB families Happy Holidays and hope to see everyone in the New Year! For those families moving on, we wish you good luck and until next time, La Revedere!

This week the Under 11 Vampire Boys played BSB in a 9-aside friendly football contest. The match was lively and featured all of our winter-season players. Go Vampires!

The G1-2 Gymnastics CCA practiced walking the high-beam this week and landing the jumps!

The Food Art CCA allowed students to get creative as they made delicious banana treats!

ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES

Our Upper Secondary varsity basketball teams played their first friendly games of the season this week. It was a great opportunity to get the teams on the court playing some ball. The girls played the ICED Hawks and the boys played the Bucharest Christian Academy.

The Co-Curricular Activities department would like to wish everyone a happy holiday!

Thanks to everyone who attended our December counselors’ corner last week on Building Confidence and Self Esteem in Teenagers. Our next counselors’ corner will be on Managing Stress on February 7th. Please watch for more information about parent events.This week the Counselors and Design teachers came together to host Istituto Marangoni, a design and fashion university with 10 campuses world-wide, to study and practice the design thinking process with the Grade 11 Design Technology students and the Grade 10 design students.

We would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season! Please remember that this can be a difficult time for some, however, and we’d like to offer these suggestions for coping with sadness and grief in the holidays.

Wow, it’s been an action packed first half of the year!

After the holidays there will be some organizational changes within the PTO Executive committee.

For the upcoming months, Monica Bommer-Neuner will be taking on the PTO president role, replacing Kimberley, and Celine Pallancher will be taking on the PTO vice president role, replacing Kate.

This is a temporary phase that will take place until the new bylaws are voted and confirmed and until new volunteers will apply for the role. As for the PTO Secretary role, Shana Cleto will be taking this on and will replace Chelsi.

We would like to thank Kimberley, Chelsi and Kate for all their hard work, dedication and support for the PTO through the first half of this academic year.

You will all be missed!

It has been said that an effective parent will work themselves out of a job. Put another way, if we help nurture the necessary skills, our students gain independence. In the Elementary Makerspace we hope to foster increasingly independent makers who are engaged in learning they care deeply about.

This engagement starts with honoring student choice and respecting personal interests. In the Makerspace most of the time students choose their own projects. I’ve been amazed by the creative projects our students produce. In just one session I witnessed the following projects underway:

Of course, as students explore new materials, processes and ideas they will inevitably encounter challenges. These challenges can extend beyond tools and techniques to include developing personal resilience, working effectively with others, and expressing themselves clearly. Sometimes the product they create will not match their vision but they will have inevitably learned from the process. As Harvard’s Project Zero states in their whitepaper, students will develop, “. . .a sense of self and a sense of community that empowers them to engage with and shape the designed dimension of their world.” For me, this speaks to an important purpose of the Makerspace: enabling our students to become agents of change in our increasingly complex world.

By nurturing the creativity and independence of our students, we are able to foster greater interest in learning alongside the development of crucial 21st century skills. So what is the Makerspace? I recently challenged some students with that very question. The first person I asked, Radu I. (G5) said without hesitation, “The Makerspace is a place where you can make, play and discover.” I think he nailed it.

IndieFlix, a leading independent online streaming platform, is sparking a global conversation about

anxiety through screenings of its brand-new documentary, “Angst: Raising Awareness Around

Anxiety”. On January 21 and 22 2020, AISB will hold two (or three) special screenings of the documentary to open up a dialogue between families, community members and the counselors. The event will feature

a viewing of the 56-minute film, followed by an informative panel discussion, led by the AISB

Counseling team.

Producers Scilla Andreen and Karin Gornick have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness

around anxiety. Through candid interviews, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and

teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a

special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. In

addition, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, along with the help, resources

and tools available to address the condition.

An email will go out to the AISB community to reserve a spot for one of the showings.

Part of the beauty of this film is the openness of the children and young adults featured; for some of them,

the “Angst” project marks the first time they are publicly sharing their experiences with anxiety. Our

hope is that their candidness and bravery will inspire our community to do the same.

While “Angst” documents the struggles some people have with anxiety, it also reveals their hope for the

future. Noah, a teenager in the film, describes it this way: “Anxiety doesn’t define me. It’s not just a curse; it

also gives me strength.”

“Everybody needs to know that anxiety disorders are real, common and treatable instead of viewing them as a personal choice or something to be ashamed of,” said

Dr. Jerry Bubrick, Senior Director of Anxiety Disorders Center, Child Mind Institute. “Getting help early is

crucial in giving people the tools they need to feel better. We just need to start the conversation.”

“We felt it was important to make a movie that could raise awareness to open up the conversation and

provide hope,” said Andreen, IndieFlix CEO and “Angst” Producer. “So many people struggle with

anxiety and have trouble talking about it. We want to change that.”

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S., impacting 54 percent of females

and 46 percent of males, with age seven being the median age of onset, according to the World Health

Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only one-third of those suffering receive

treatment. Everyone involved in the development of “Angst” has a personal experience with anxiety – from

the producers to the interviewees.

“The conversation surrounding mental health really hits home for me,” said Michael Phelps. “Many people don’t understand how debilitating mental illness truly

can be, and even more than that, how common it is, yet people are afraid to have the serious discussions

.about it. I welcomed the opportunity to be a part of ‘Angst’ to further the dialogue around mental health

and to help people understand the impact anxiety has on our mental state and encourage people, especially

kids, to ask for help.”

“Angst” screens in schools and communities across the world. The IndieFlix original film is expected to reach

more than three million people around the world, through 25,000 community and school screenings.

This Monday during lunch, The Bite organized a party to celebrate the end of Movember.

There was food, a mustache competition, and most importantly, our “student barbers” shaved

off those crazy ‘staches for our participating teachers and student. Here’s a look at what

happened.

First up was the mustache competition. Candidates sat in a line in front of the crowd

and were judged based on their mustaches. Among the categories, there was “cringiest

stache,” “most lush stache,” and “best overall stache.” The crowd had lots of fun choosing the

winners.

Stradale set up burger and quesadilla stands, providing students with lower-cost snacks to munch on while they watched their favorite teachers shave off their mustaches.

Then, the big event: the shave-off! Admittedly, we were supposed to have professional barbers come to school, but that fell through last minute. Luckily, 11th graders Evelina and Cristina, along with 12th graders Mehdi and Kyia, agreed to do the clipping.

HEALTHY GINGERBREAD PEOPLE

The most beautiful time of the year is that when some of our senses are numbed by the freezing cold, and some are warmed up and delighted by fantastic smells. When

thinking about traditional christmas aromas, rich spices such as cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg come to mind.

These magical ingredients could even make the grinch love christmas.

Because we at Stradale want to bring you and your family happiness at your table, even during holidays, we suggest you a simple and tasty gingerbread man recipe. A healthy

recipe to bake with your family on christmas eve.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups plain wholemeal flour• 1 cup almond flour• 1/4 cup unsalted butter cubes (for a

dairy free alternative, you could use olive or coconut oil)

• 1/4 cup honey• 5 large dates pitted • 1 egg• 1 tsp baking powder• 1 tsp ground cinnamon• 1 tsp ground ginger• 1/2 tsp allspice or nutmeg• 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, almond flour, baking powder and the spices.2. In a second bowl, combine the butter cubes (or oil), honey, dates, vanilla and egg. Using a hand

blender, blend ingredients until well combined. Alternatively, use a food processor or blender.3. Add the butter mixture to the flour mixture and mix well to combine.4. Put the dough out onto a clean surface and roll out till it’s around an 1/8 inch or 3mm thick.5. Line a baking tray with baking paper and place dough onto tray.6. Cover with another piece of baking paper and place in the fridge to firm up.7. Just before removing from the fridge, pre-heat the oven to 150C.8. After an hour, remove from the fridge and use your gingerbread cutter to cut the dough into shape.9. Return to the lined baking tray and place into the oven.10. Bake for 15-20 minutes, checking regularly.11. When starting to turn golden brown, remove from the oven and set aside to cool.12. Bon appetit!
