1. SUMMARY

Traffic in August was at 70.6% of August 2019 levels. The high traffic growth during summer has eased. August saw a slight increase in traffic each week. Since July, the network traffic is slightly above the most optimistic scenario of the latest EUROCONTROL traffic scenarios published on 1 June 2021. On average, the network saw 24,635 flights/day. The peak day was 27 August (26,773 flights) with traffic at 73.3% of 2019 levels. Ryanair was the busiest carrier in August with on average 2,318 flights/day, followed by Turkish Airlines (1,320 flight/day), easyJet (1,171 flights/day) and Lufthansa (816 flights/day). Five low cost carriers were included in the TOP 10 airlines in August 2021. Volotea, Netjets, Transavia France and Loganair are above their 2019 levels. The busiest airport was Amsterdam/Schiphol (1,066 flights/day), followed by IGA Istanbul (1,007 flights/day), Paris/Charles de Gaulle (951 flights/day) and Frankfurt/Main (932 flights/day). There were a total of 789,449 minutes of ATFM delayi in August. The flow measures were mainly applied in Marseille ACC, Reims ACC, Athens ACC and at Athens airport. Network departure punctuality dropped to around 74% and arrival punctuality to around 79%. With fewer airspace constraints, the network excess fuel burn indicator remained low compared to 2019.

2. TRAFFIC EVOLUTION

Traffic has been increasing over the last sixteen weeks and is slightly above the EUROCONTROL’s Traffic Scenario 1 shown below. Air traffic throughout Europe was 29.4% down in August 2021 compared to August 2019. Business aviation and all-cargo remained the only segments surpassing 2019 flight levels. 4. OPERATIONS

The EUROCONTROL Network Manager continued monitoring the operational situation and held weekly Ad-hoc Coordination meetings to share network status. There were a total of 789,449 minutes of ATFM delay. En-route delays accounted for 64.4% of these ATFM delays and airports 35.6%. EUROCONTROL NM provided a consolidated view of relevant NOTAMs on the NOP Portal and issued weekly versions of the Rolling Seasonal Plan. This focusses on the next six weeks plan and on managing the execution and implementation of the five year NOP.

ATFM DELAY AND ATTRIBUTIONS EN-ROUTE DELAY

AIRPORT DELAY

• ATC capacity issues at Athens and Iraklion airports represented 66% of these delays;

• Airport capacity generated delays at Berlin/Brandenburg, Porto and Koeln/Bonn airports;

• Low visibility impacted operations at Porto airports and generated a total of 15,120 minutes of ATFM delay.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS AND ISSUES Special Events

• ILS calibration at Paris/Charles de Gaule airport between 23 and 26 August generated 1,909 minutes of ATFM delay ; Operational

• Ground handling staffing shortage at Koeln/Bonn throughout the month generated 2,782 minutes of ATFM delay; • Fire in the vicinity of Split airport from 02 to 04 August generated 2,096 minutes of ATFM delay; • Radar and communication system issues on 09 August at Athens airport generated 1,911 minutes of ATFM delay; • Frequency issues at Santorini airport throughout the month generated 23,546 minutes of ATFM delay;

5. FUEL BURN

The Network Fuel Efficiency study1 introduced the Excess Fuel Burn indicator. During the COVID period, with fewer flights and airspace restrictions, the network is relatively more fuel efficient than the 2019 period when the indicator was over 9%. The indicator has fluctuated during 2021 due to the changing mix of routes flown at low traffic levels. It was at or below 5% during August. NM will monitor excess fuel burn as traffic returns.
