Working Together Toward a

Healthier You

Sam is experiencing chest pain, dizzi-ness and sweating. You are con-cerned Sam is experiencing a heart attack and decide to call 911 for help. When EMS arrives, they ask you for some basic information: Sam’s full name, date of birth, gen-der, etc. What gender did you imag-ine Sam to be? Health educators, such as the Ameri-can Heart Association, are working to dispel the idea that heart attacks are just a concern for men. Heart disease and stroke kill more women in the United States than any other cause of death, including all cancers combined according to “Grasping Heart Disease: How to Recognize Women’s Symptoms,” an article in Vital Record.

Women may experience symptoms of a heart attack differently than men, says the article. Sometimes women’s symptoms are more subtle than men’s such as trouble sleeping or exhaustion, nausea and jaw and neck pain to name a few. What can you do to prevent heart dis-ease? Eat a variety of healthy, unpro-cessed foods, stay active, do not smoke and find ways to relieve your stress. Learn more about heart health on Sat-urday, February 4th during the free Pink Goes Red for Heart Health event presented by Alpha Kappa Alpha at the Killeen Community Center. Bring a yo-ga mat and wear comfortable clothes!

The Better Business Bureau, BBB, can help you find a

tains helpful information about the latest tax scams,

including tax ID fraud, as well as information about

tax credits and deductions.

center/ for more information.

What is with the bulletin board full of paper shoes? It is part of KLSS’ mara-

thon challenge! Each shoe represents one mile the employees of KLSS have

completed. Summer Terrell, one of the Curriculum and Instruction Wellness

Champs, first dared people to get out of their seats and walk to collectively

cover the distance of one marathon, 26.2 miles, before Winter Break. By the

time Winter Break came, the group had completed two marathon distances

and they are still going strong today! Did you know short walking breaks like

this can temporarily cause hyperoxygenation in the brain leading to in-

creased energy and focus? Read more about this in the Forbes article “To

Work Better, Just Get Up From Your Desk.”

Studies show that even short periods of movement are important for our

health. Click here to learn about how these breaks add up towards our daily

activity goals. Also exciting, each 1,000 steps taken is worth a point on Go

365, and these steppers are earning a ton of points!

Summer and others have noticed how the challenge has created a happy,

upbeat atmosphere. Not only do people compete against one another, but

they are also supportive of each other. Summer can be seen walking the

building, giving out many high-fives. Summer says “it is all about building

those relationships.” Needless to say, this challenge has been good for the

mind and body.

You, too, can do this at your campus or department! Try starting a chal-lenge like this or maybe a standing meeting. Standing meetings tend to be more productive, increase alertness and finish sooner. With this continuing activity, the employees of KLSS have a head start on the final event of the Superintendent's Cup Challenge when we will take on the Million Mile Month. More details will follow soon. Summer would like to send a huge shout out to all of her KLSS peeps and

says “you all really inspire and motivate me everyday!”

Does your family need some ideas to get them off the couch and

moving? You are not alone! BEFIT, a local fitness training facility,

wants to help you with FUN solutions that will put your family in mo-

tion everyday. Join BEFIT trainer Shannon on Saturday, February 18th

at BEFIT on W. S. Young Dr. for this free event. Call (254) 223-3488
