Dear Friends,
Mid-summer is upon us.Many of us are already onleave from our ministriesand jobs or are preparingto go on vacation withfriends and family. It is a
blessed time of spiritual and physicalrefreshment. For the Friars of the Province of St. Joseph, this is also time to look back at theaccomplishments of the past y ear and to getready for the challenges of the next season.
As you know, last April saw the formaldedication of the new Academic Center andTheological Library at the Dominican Houseof Studies (DHS) in Washington, D.C.Undoubtedly, that was the highlight of the
year. And I cannot stress enough the vitalrole you, our dear donors and supporters, have played in making this momentous eventa reality with your generous gifts andprayers. We call on you again, in gratitude, tosupport us in the year ahead, as we focus onthe completion of the renovation of the Priory at the DHS and a host of other initiatives.
But I want to take full advantage of thispause in our busy lives and express gratitude.God’s blessings continue to be so abundantthat words fall short. This month, 11 new candidates began their three-week postulancy at Providence College inProvidence, RI. On Aug. 8, they will formally
begin their novitiate year at St. Gertrude’sPriory outside Cincinnati. Thanks to you, weare able to welcome these wonderful youngmen, house them, feed them and begin theirformation toward becoming a new generationof Friars to serv e the people of God.
This month, too, has brought tremendous joy and blessing with theepiscopal ordination of Fr. Augustine DiNoia, O.P.. Pope BenedictXVI has named him Secretary of theCongregation for Divine Worship and theDiscipline of the Sacraments. This is anenormous honor for the Province of the St.Joseph and, again, a tribute to yourcommitment. For Fr. Di Noia’s comments atthe Ordination and to view and relive theevent, please click here.
Also recently posted on the site is the audio version of a magnificent lecture Fr. RomanusCessario, O.P., speaking at a recent vocation
weekend, gave on Dominican spirituality. Hespeaks of it as a grace freely bestowed by God, in contrast to contemporary formulas of spirituality that substitute “mental creationsfor true Christian devotion.”
