Hello Neighbors! Happy New Year Lakewood Village!

Thank you to all the people involved in our neighbor-hood parade this year. It was a huge success, think partly due to the wonderful article written in the Sun (see next column) the Friday before. Also, to Pat Furtado (Aunt Pat) for her beautiful LVNA Holiday signs that were out at Lawrence Expressway.

For those who missed it, we had Mayor Hamilton, Vice Mayor Griffith, Councilmember Spitlari, Councilmember Whittam, and Councilmember Moylan and newly elected Council members Milius and Davis. We also had Chief Grugurina from Public Safety. There were so many people who participated and I don‘t want to forget anyone, so a BIG thanks to all of you.

Also, thanks to the entire neighborhood that stepped up and gave from their hearts. Lakewood‘s KLAS afterschool program collected over $800.00 in toys and games. The toys were do-nated to the Sunnyvale Com-munity Services which keep the items in Sunnyvale

and give to Sunnyvale Families in need. (continued on Page 4 )

I would like to also mention that March is the LVNA’s

now if you would like to hold an office in this association. We

cannot continue our events if neighbor‘s don‘t step up.

Since 1989, the LVNA has been a strong neighborhood

association in Sunnyvale. Before 1989 we were the LVRA

beginning in the early 50‘ up until the 1970‘s. It would be a

shame if we no longer had a voice, since we are so isolated

from the rest of Sunnyvale.

Volunteer by Donating to the Lakewood Village Neighbors Association (LVNA)

By a Lakewood Village Resident Hooray, hooray, hooray! Finally we all have a way to volunteer without taking up our time.

Last month, I went to the meeting and saw that our LVNA was short on cash. That got me to thinking; there are approximately 1400 homes in Lakewood Village. If we all were to donate just $1.00 each our LVNA would not have a problem affording many of the things we would like to do, such as paying a team to clean graffiti, take care of litter, helping senior citizens, etc .

When you think about it, we give tips to a lot of service people; why not give a tip to all the volunteers that give their time and energy to serve us.

As you can see this month some of us are fortunate enough to donate more than a dollar, so if one person gives five dollars

they pay for four families that couldn‘t. If someone gives twenty that compensates for nineteen more.

I have lived in Lakewood Village since 1969 and have never volunteered my time or energy, so it really makes me feel great to

help financially. Here‘s looking forward to a lot of others to join me in making a stronger LAKEWOOD VILLAGE

NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION.

This letter was written by a neighbor of yours who care…THANK YOU ALL.

Note from the LVNA Board: Donation information (amount and name only) will NOT be published in The Villager

unless approval from the donator has been received.

Sunnyvale: Lakewood Village Holiday Parade

celebrates 20 Years By Alia Wilson

(Continued from page 1) ―It‘s community building,‖ said Judy Fernandez, founder and president of the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association and organizer of the event. "It's a positive thing for kids to feel good about their neighborhood and to brag about it. They do talk about it afterward, like, 'Did you know we have a parade?' That's what it's all about for me."

The first parade was organized by the Lakewood Village Resident Association in 1959. The resident association folded sometime in the 1970s, but the parade and other neighborhood activities were brought back by the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association in 1991.

Sunnyvale resident Leah Lane, 52, said she could remember, as a child who grew up in Sunnyvale, how the parade used to go up and down nearly all of the streets in the neighborhood. "It was a big deal, especially having Santa Claus there," Lane said. A horse-drawn wagon with hay on it and a flatbed truck carrying Santa and his sleigh were some of the highlights, she added.

"The parade, for a lot of kids today, is the first time they get to be up close to something like fire engines or cop cars or classic cars," Lane said. "It opens up a lot of worlds. Kids can say, 'Hey, I saw you at the parade,' at school to someone they may not have talked to before. It's a good breeding ground for a good strong community."

This year, Vice Mayor Jim Griffith and council members Tony Spitaleri and David Whittum will be joined by council-elects Jim Davis and Tara Martin-Milius, as well as interim Police Chief Dayton Pang.

Students from the Kids Learning After School program will also pass out candy and collect new, unwrapped toys to donate to Sunnyvale Community Services.

The parade will end at Fairwood Park, where Santa will greet children

and cookies and hot chocolate will be provided.

The LVNA Villager January 2012 7 ©2012 Lakewood Village Neighborhood As-

redirect some plumbing. If you are re-roofing, insulation can be added over the existing deck. The walls can be filled with blown in insulation with minimum changes in the finishes. And we've all seen ads for window replacement! The wall furnaces too, (with 1960 era efficiencies of 65%, that is 35% up the flue) are due for a serious look at replacement with more efficient alternatives. I might also pass on a personal testimonial about insulating the ceilings. It allows the slabs under our floors to act to passively cool our homes. (They tend to be rather hot on some summer evenings.) This is perhaps the best reason to consider this area, both for an aesthetic and especially a functional change. So by all means change out those halogen (read-hot!) bolbs for compact fluorescents. If you are interested, look at the big changes in LED (light emitting diodes), change out your shower heads for water and heat conservation and before you get wrapped up in photovoltaics (to run that meter backwards), take a good look at the house around you.

The Houses We Live In By Keith Armstrong It‘s hard to mistake the Lakewood Village neighborhood for any other. The low pitched roofs, the gable-end glass over the doors, the one car garages, the sideways garages, etc, are prevalent even now. These affordable homes were a distant relative of the now better known ―Eichler Homes.‖ Our homes are also in the milieu of mid-century modernism and presented some unique challenges to their inhabitants. Nearly 50 years after this community was built, we are still challenged to deal with the eccentric design.

These homes most notably lack both a crawl-space (being built on a slab) and an attic, instead having an open-beam and plank ceilings. This aligned the homes with both economy and with a modest, though functional style, which compensated for their small floor plans.

These features also had a very real cost. The under/over spaces in homes are very useful for the providing utilities, heat ducts, plumbing (both water supply and waste lines), even gas supply, electrical and communications lines.

In Lakewood homes, other ways were found. The original heating was generally a wall furnace, sometimes in two locations. The plumbing is in the concrete slab, while the gas supply is outside the eaves, over the cabinets and in the hallway soffit. It varies some, but it does show a lack of thought given the project size of 1,500 homes.

At the November LVNA meeting, a proposal was made to make use of a PG&E program to replace inefficient lights, shower heads, and some older appliances. All of this is great and that it was a free program, gave it credibility. However, the simple truth is, this misses the obvious near total lack of insulation in our homes..

This is not 1950, nor the ‗70s, when our state‘s first energy codes were mandated. As originally built, the ceilings in these homes with the 2.5" wood fiber planking, only achieve an R-value (a notation of thermal resistance, higher numbers are desirable) of perhaps R-7. The standard minimum today is R-30! The walls are generally un-insulated and have an R value of perhaps R-4.Code minimums today would call for R-13. The windows are original-single glazed (R f .91) with a putty set aluminum frame. Today we would start at an R factor of 2.0 with limits on metal frames. This is not to say that nothing can be done! The ―beam space‖ at the ceiling can be insulated and enclosed. This can also be an opportunity to add more lighting and

Sunnyvale detectives nab 3 suspects in Brass Rail stabbing; another suspect still at large

By Alia Wilson, Sunnyvale Sun With the aid of an anonymous tip, Sunnyvale detectives have arrested three of four men suspected in an Aug. 14 stabbing at the Brass Rail.

The stabbing at the bikini bar, 160 Persian Drive, sent two San Jose residents to the hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. Detectives said the suspects, all from San Jose, attacked the victims while leaving the club around midnight. Investigators do not believe the incident was related to gangs or drugs.

The tipster recognized two of the men in photos printed in The Sun on Nov. 4 and provided names to detectives two days later, detective Jim Choi said.

"Due to the names, we were able to conduct our investigation through prior arrests, booking information and pulled up a picture that looked similar to one of our suspects," Choi said. "So we focused on that person, continuing our investigation into prior history, contacts with law enforcement and employment, and we were able to systematically go down the line and identify all the people involved in the stabbing."

Detective Jose Ramirez obtained warrants for three of the men and on Nov. 17th arrested them at their San Jose work places. Police said they did have some ties to Sunnyvale, mostly with the Brass Rail.

Anthoney Ostroskie, 23, Justin Bright, 26, and primary suspect Jesse Chacon, 33, were arrested without incident, police reported. (continued on page 8)

Sunnyvale Subway Sandwich Worker Shot During Robbery

By Mark Gomez A 26-year old Subway sandwich worker was shot in the abdomen Tuesday night during an armed robbery, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

The woman suffered a non life-threatening wound after cooperation and handing over an undisclosed amount of cash, according to Public Safety Captain Dave Vebrugge.

The suspect is described as a woman in her mid-20s.

The robbery was reported just before 10PM at the Subway Sandwich shop at 605 E. El Camino Real.

Brass Rail Continued

A fourth suspect, identified as Agustin Dones, 34, has not been found. According to police, his family and girlfriend have been contacted, but with no results. Police believe he moved out of the area shortly after the incident.

Police said all four men were aware of the investigation, so their families actually hid their vehicles and other possible links to their locations. Clothing that matched the description of Chacon's was found in his San Jose home, police said. Police also said a weapon was recovered during the investigation.

Charges have been filed with the district attorney's office for Chacon and Bright. Chacon is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, while Bright is charged with battery.

Capt. David Verbrugge wanted to acknowledge the Brass Rail's new security system for aiding in the case. "We've been working for the past year for a security plan due to numerous calls for service out there," Verbrugge said. "They came in willing to work with us and set up a new security system, video and photos. Staff was completely cooperative throughout the investigation. Building that relationship with them helped solve this crime—and, of course, the excellent detective work."
