President’s Column (Cont. from Page 1)

Our last guest was from the Mountain View Day Workers. One of our neighbors has used this service before and was very pleased. Another used them for a garage sale and didn’t

make much money after paying them. The Director explain that we should use them as skilled labor to get a better bang for our buck!

(Editor’s note-I hired a worker through the Mt View Day Workers Center for Dumpster Day. I had Daniel to disconnect our old hot tub from the electricity. Then break it apart and put it in the dumpster. He did a wonderful job! I will definitely use them again.)

Coastal Cleanup Day

Mark your calendar for September 15, 2012 to take part in the 28th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day event.

Join together with others and take action in an effort to clean up the environment. The

best part is you don’t have to travel to the coast to participate! Our local cleanup event will focus on Sunnyvale’s West Channel waterway and part of the Guadalupe Slough.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. Clean-up activities begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at noon. Gloves, pick-up sticks, safety vests, trash and recycling bags will be distributed. For more details or to sign up to participate in Sunnyvale’s California Coastal Cleanup Day event, call Environmental Outreach at (408) 730-7717 or

e-mail at [email protected].

School’s Open, Drive Carefully! By Phyllis Fowler

Summer Vacation is over and kids are back in school. I found these safety tips at www.safekids.org Check out the website

for more tips on safety basics, recalls & their newsletter. Safe Kids USA recommends that parents take the time to talk about safety with their kids. Before school starts, parents should walk with their kids the route to school and access the hazards. For your child’s safety, select a course with the least number of traffic crossings.

Simple Reminders for Drivers:

Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods and school zones!

Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours.

Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Put down your phone and don't talk or text while driving!

Remember it’s the law! Don’t risk a child’s life, other drivers or your safety.

Reminders for Kids:

Kids should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Never run out into the streets or cross in between

parked cars. Make sure kids always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them.

As adults, we should teach and model the safety behaviors that all children should follow, even if they don’t walk to school every day. We need to be proactive to keep our kids safe as they head back to school. Whether you are taking your kids to school or driving through a school zone, We all can do our part to keep kids safe.

Friendship Day is August 5th

(continued from page 1)

However, it has been kept alive and revitalized in Asia, where several countries adopted the

tradition of dedicating a day to friends. Today, Friendship Day is enthusiastically celebrated in a number of countries across the world. Many friends acknowledge each other with exchanges of gifts and cards on this day. Friendship bands are very popular in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and parts of South America. With the advent of social networking sites, Friendship Day is also

being celebrated online.

It’s America’s Night Out Against Crime! (Continued from page 1)

This year over 15,500 communities are expected to take part. (Texas will celebrate on October 2nd.)

While the traditional 'lights on' and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years. They include: block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.

The National Association of Town Watch (NATW), Executive Director Matt Peskin said, "It's a wonderful opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention, and neighborhood camaraderie. While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out does represent the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places throughout the year. It [NNO] is a night to celebrate safety and crime prevention successes - and to expand and strengthen programs for the next 364 days."

Excerpted from “Beyond The Badge” Sunnyvale Public Safety newsletter.

Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car for "just a minute."

Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs. Even with the windows cracked on a 70° F to 80° F day the inside of your car can heat up to over 100° F in minutes! As you can imagine, with that fur coat on, a dog's body temperature rises very quickly.

While humans have sweat glands that help regulate our body heat, dogs cool down mostly by panting. In only a short amount of time, a dog with a high body temperature can suffer critical damage to his nervous system, heart, liver and brain.

The major cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving a dog in a parked car. Watch for symptoms such as restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, dark tongue, bright red mucous membranes on the gums

and conjunctiva of the eyes, hyperventilation (gasping for air), rapid heartbeat, fever, lack of coordination, vomiting, and/or seizures. If a dog shows any of these symptoms, get him/her into the shade immediately and lower the animal's body temperature gradually by providing water to drink, applying a cool wet towel to the head, neck, and chest, or immersing the dog in cool (not ice cold) water.

Law enforcement officers who see an animal in a car that appears to be suffering are legally permitted to do whatever is necessary to remove the animal from the car. Because leaving an animal in an unattended car may also be considered an act of animal neglect, prosecutors could choose to file additional charges.

Prevention is the key to keeping pets safe during warmer weather. It's best to leave them at home with access to cool fresh water and adequate shelter.
