May Friendship Day... May 7, 2016 @6:30pm This will be held at the Otterbein United Methodist Church on South Davis Avenue. The Sonshine Puppets will perform for us with our program and business meeting to follow.

Storytime... Saturday, May 14, 2016 Parents with children through 8 years old are encouraged to bring their little ones for this time of storytelling, experiential play, and faith-forming craft activities held in our church educational area from 10:00-11:30am. Any child in our community and their caregiver is welcome at this new and fun event.

Mother/Daughter... May 19, 2016 @7:00pm This year we are going to do something different. Throughout the evening, we will be enjoying numerous desserts and beverages (no dinner this year). The Mountain Winds have been invited to come entertain us for the evening. A woodwind trio consisting of Rick Evans, flute; Morris Kittle, clarinet; and Linda Wolfersheim, flute, they will regale us with a presentation of Civil War music. Come join us for a relaxing evening of music and dessert!

Faces of Faith... We are now collecting items to be delivered to area agencies sometime in May. Suggested items are: toothbrush/toothpaste, comb, brush, deodorant, razors, washcloth, soap, shampoo, lotion, make-up, nail care products, and other personal care items you may wish to bring in. Items may be placed in the baskets in the White Chapel and the Fellowship Hall.

Witness Service Committee... The Witness Service Committee continues to have a very busy spring! Our most recent projects have included: 1. Serving 62 meals at the Common Ground Café. 2. Providing baskets to families during the Easter season. Over 300 nonperishable food items were collected from the congregation for the baskets! 3. Great Day of Service—our annual event to go out into the community and help those in need. These projects were joint efforts of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and Holy Trinity Church. If these projects intrigue you, or if you have other ideas of how DMPC and HTLC can reach out to our community, please consider joining the Witness Service Committee. For more information feel free to contact Ann Macomber or John Talbott at (304) 636-8847

Fifty-five PW’s from WV came together to hear Rev. Joan Stewart, Director of WVMAW (WV Ministry of Advocacy and Workcamps) explain the work of WVMAW and offer opportunities for mission work in WV. The keynote speaker for the day was Maureen Wright, Stated Clerk of our WV Presbytery. Maureen highlighted PW in WV who are involved in mission work in their communities. Who’s in my Pew? Ric and Denise Campbell

Ric and Denise are both members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. They have two sons:

Lance Bond and Logan Campbell. Lance is a graduate student at Hunter University in New York and Logan is a student at Elkins Middle School.

Ric graduated from Rockingham Memorial School of Radiologic Technology and WVU School of Ultrasonography. He has worked as a diagnostic medical sonographer at Davis Medical Center for 32 years. He also works part-time at Dr. Khan’s Urgent Care and was a PRN for Pocahontas Memorial Hospital in Buckeye, WV. Denise received her undergraduate education at D&E and ABU and earned her Master’s at Marshall University. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree and is a Professor at ABU. She is a Delegate in the WV Legislature.

Ric’s hobbies include antiques, flea markets, and spending time with Logan in outside activities. Denise enjoys growing flowers and herbs. Logan is an active teenager who enjoys being outside with his Dad as well as serving as acolyte at Holy Trinity.

Ric’s favorite church memories are the beautiful and inspirational Christmas Eve candlelight services. His funniest memory was when he was the pulpit supply preacher and he forgot to say the Lord’s Prayer before the Benediction. A church member pointed out his mistake and always reminds him of it prior to each service. Ric never forgot it again and had a good laugh about this with Pastor Kevin one Sunday and another good laugh after the service when Pastor Kevin forgot the prayer also! Denise’s favorite church memories include church camp and youth group. Her funniest church memory was when she attended an out of town youth activity and the pastor stated “I have a full tank of gas in my car and I will take you home if need be.”

Both Ric and Denise are active in community activities. Ric is a member of Elks Lodge #1135, is Past President and Board Member of the Tygart Valley Lions Club, member of Elkins Masons Lodge #108, Past President and member of Knights Templar, and Commander of Osiris Shrine. He has also served on the Pulpit Supply Committee at HTLC and is currently on the Pulpit Supply list at Valley Bend Presbyterian Church in East Dailey. Denise is a member of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce, the Emma Scott Garden Club, WV Autism Support Center, DMC Foundation, Farm Bureau, and is an FFA Advisory Member.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church News Corner… CHURCH COUNCIL Both of the furnaces had to be repaired recently. Thankfully, they were still under warranty so repairs were only $1,000.00 instead of $10,000.00. Ric Campbell recently resigned from Church Council. Greg Schumacher was appointed to serve the remaining two years of his term. WOMEN OF THE ELCA Jane Hazer and Nancy Schumacher attended the Mountain-Monongahela Valley Spring Assembly on Saturday, April 16th. Officers for 2016 are: Nancy Schumacher—President Brenda Ramsey—Vice-President Jane Hazer—Secretary/Treasurer Congratulations to Sydney Schumacher for being chosen Big 10 All Conference First Team as a cheerleader. Festival of Faith 2016... Six members of DMPC traveled to First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, on April 2 for the annual Festival of Faith educational event sponsored by West Virginia Presbytery. The Keynote speaker was Moderator Heath Rada, Moderator of the 221st General Assembly. His address was entitled “Where Are We Going – A Look at the PCUSA and What Our Members Say That They Want.” He spoke of early results of a recent survey by the PCUSA of members that provided some surprising information. While over 200,000 people have left the denomination, over 145,000 have become new members –the largest group coming from those are 21-45 years old. And, he added, we are losing members at a LOWER rate than ever before AND the PCUSA has had the lowest member loss of all the major denominations. Why are people coming to the PCUSA? Rada stated that the survey quoted people as saying that we are a welcoming church to a diversity of people and that they feel “comfortable” attending local worshiping congregations and asking questions about the church, faith and their place in the church community. He stated that a movement in the church to begin 1001 New Worshiping Communities has thus far started over 350 new such communities - many in quite a diverse array of settings. One such church that he and an entire local established congregation visited was the 'Serious Ju-Ju Skate Works Ministry' - a community of skate boarding young people that meets in a large warehouse in Kalispell, Montana and that attracts over 100 skateboarders. One of the highlights of this visit was a young man who had never been to a church and never read the Bible telling the long-time church members that he had recently come across a wonderful Bible verse: John 3:16. His sincere testimony gave a new and powerful meaning to this beloved scripture. Those in attendance at the Festival were given the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops Including: “A Conversation with the Moderator” during which Rada further explained his earlier statements and fielded many questions from workshop attendees about the state of the PCUSA and the upcoming General Assembly in Portland, Oregon; Building a Multi-Generational Prayer Center; Building Safety/Disaster Preparedness; Coping with Alzheimer's Disease; Drumming to the Heartbeat of God, a Study on Luke's Gospel, and many more. Day-long programs were provided for children and youth who attended. The next Festival of Faith is in April 2017. We hope to see more members of DMPC attend.

PCUSA Moderator Heath Rada
