Riverton Parke Jr. – Sr. High latitude is 39.8º & our longitude is -87.4º. We are in 7th grade science & our teacher is Mrs. Porter.
I helped by taking temperatures & finding sunrise/sunset times. We collected information using newspapers, T.V., & online. Because daylight information was not listed, we used some simple math (subtraction) to figure it out. Also if we took temperatures at about noon. We each took a thermometer and got out of the sun & wind. In a shady corner we held the thermometers away from our body so our body heat wouldn’t effect our results.
Some places have more minutes of sunlight & hotter temperatures than other places because of the Earth’s tilted axis & rotation. We used the worksheet 4A & B to record our data. On the worksheet, each student took 10 schools and graphed them & then put in a line of best fit (ex: slide 4 & 5).
After all the work and all the planning, I’ve learned that as the latitude increases, the minutes of sunlight & temperature decreases. If I did this experiment again, I would put in more data from the Southern Hemisphere schools. Because just one school is not enough data.
Our school has 2 robotic teams. A high school team & a junior high school team. I’m on a team.
