Welcome Back Montevideo Mountaineers!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful, safe, healthy and happy summer and you are all ready to jump back into school. I know my daughter has missed being in school, seeing her friends and learning (those are her words!).

2017-2018 is going to be another GREAT year! But, I think it will be an even better year, as we see things we have been working so hard on actually being put into action. We will have our new STEAM Lab up and running this year with a new dedicated room, new technology, and new science lab kits. We will also have some new and improved items on the playground for our SAI students, thanks to the LOWE’s Grant we received last June. We will also continue to have all of our wonderful art and music programs with Class Act (music), Meet the Masters (art), PTA Reflections (mixed medium art) and Creative Kids Playhouse (drama). These are programs that really set our school apart from others, as most schools do not offer all of these programs. Creativity fosters learning and thinking outside of the box and is a refreshing change from text books. PTA is an organization that has annual membership dues, which helps us pay for all our PTA programs. We really appreciate your support in signing up to be a member of the Montevideo PTA. We also strongly encourage you to join us at our PTA meetings so you can hear about all of the things we are working on and play an active part in making these great programs and activities happen for our school and children. We meet the first Tuesday of each month, from 7-8:30pm at Montevideo, in the PTA Room.

We have several programs that may not happen this year as we are still needing volunteers who can chair these activities and committees. Please let me know if you are interested in being more active in the PTA and your areas of interest. Current open

positions are: Yearbook Chair, and we would like a Co-Chair for the following committees: Book Fair, Holiday Store, Abilities Awareness, and Spring Fling. I look forward to seeing you at school!!! Heather Ikerd Montevideo PTA President

LEGISLATIVE NEWS Learn about education and win money for our school!!!

What is Ed 100? Ed100 is a FREE, self-paced online course that prepares you to make a difference in your school or school district. California's education system is complex and changing fast. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a

community member, Ed100 helps you learn what you need to know to be informed, credible and ready for action. Each lesson takes about 5 minutes, in English or in Spanish. You can win $1,000 for our PTA while increasing your knowledge of key K-12 education issues.

Here’s how it works: For each short lesson you read on Ed100.org, you earn a ticket in a drawing for the benefit of our school’s PTA. The more tickets we earn, the better chance our PTA has to win. The next drawing is November 15, 2017!!!!! In the last drawing, our school won $250.00.

Making a Splash with the PTA

We may all be Different, but at Montevideo WE ALL SWIM TOGETHER! Please join our 2017-2018 PTA and help give the kids of Montevideo the best educational experience possible.

The PTA at Montevideo helps fund several programs for your childen such as Chromebooks, ipads, computer lab, Meet the Masters art program, science lab program, Class Act music program, book fair, holiday store, our newest goal of creating an amazing STEAM LAB for our students, Creative Kids Playhouse, and several free family fun nights, and much, much more! By joining this parent/teacher association, you get a vote on how PTA funds are spent as well as the unique privilege of being more involved in your child’s school experience. Each new membership your child brings in gives them a chance to win weekly raffle prizes and there will be a grand prize awarded to the classes that bring in the most memberships!

We have all heard “it takes a village” before, and without all the amazing support from parents and family, we would not be the AMAZING school we are……but becoming a member does not mean you HAVE to give us hours of your time. We understand and respect the time you have. It can be just the support of a membership or volunteering to help along the way.

Different PTA membership options are available for parents, friends, families, and businesses. So show your BIGGEST SPLASH support and join Montevideo PTA! WE Rock Montevideo!!! Jessica Kalman VP Membership [email protected]

PARENT ED NIGHT September 19th

I'm thrilled to tell you that a fabulous, helpful, informative Parents Night will be held on Tuesday, Sept.19th from 7pm-8pm! The focus will be on

"healthy foods for families" that are quick to grab-on-the-go, or simple, easy recipes with few ingredients that are not just nutritious, but packed with flavor! With busy schedules and long days of work, school, and sports, it's tough to stay "healthy" when you're on the go. I'm hoping to simplify your time in the kitchen and give you tricks and tips to grab healthy options of snacks and meals, as well as give you examples of healthy packaged foods that you can find at your local Target, Trader Joe's, Costco and grocery stores. All parents and friends are welcome! Hope to see you there!

LOWE’S TOOLBOX FOR EDUCATION GRANT Last fall, Montevideo’s SDC program was awarded a $3,800.00 grant from The Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF). The mission of the LCEF is to improve the communities they serve, and have a positive impact on the lives of their customers, neighbors, and employees. Montevideo was awarded this grant to update our SAI Play Equipment and Sandbox. With this grant, we were able to purchase 4 wide track trikes, 4 all terrain tricycles, a 10 foot by 10 foot

sandbox with cover, and a number of new large plastic trucks. We are incredibly grateful to Lowe's for their generosity! Special thank yous to Pamela Sailor for her amazing grant writing skills, Juan Herrera for assembling the trikes, and Casey Newhouser and Chase Flores for helping to put together the sandbox--You Rock! FUN RUN OCT. 20th

We have a little change up this year for the Fun Run, which is our biggest fundraiser of the year! We are changing the date of the Fun Run to be in the FALL this year! Due to the

amount of community/school/sports fundraisers in the Spring, we believe the Fall will help out the calendar a bit better.

Our Pep Rally Kick-Off and fundraising will start October 11th and our actual Fun Run date will be October 20th, so mark your calendars! The students had such a great time the last two years and we have exceeded our goal both times! The simplicity of on-line pledges, the character themes that are discussed, and the excitement that buzzes all throughout the entire week, makes this event one of the most memorable for the kids!

If anyone would like to help in ANY way, please email [email protected] . Thank you so much and I look forward to the kick-off event and FUN RUN in October! Jeanne Larson Fun Run Chair

CLASS ACT We are excited to announce... We are a Class Act School! Montevideo has been accepted into Pacific Symphony's Class Act program for another year.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY October 4th

Come join us for International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 4th, which will also be our first Walk to School Wednesday for the year. International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

At Montevideo we have Walk to School Wednesday and we do this the first Wednesday of every month. Wear your brightest colors to be seen and safe, and meet your friends and fellow students at one of our three neighborhood stops and enjoy a morning walk. We encourage parents to join in with their children but drop-offs are welcome as well. Walking school buses will be cancelled if raining.

Walking school buses meet at:

• Christopher Park, 26801 Valpariso Drive – Departs at 7:40am Valpariso Drive & Palo Lane • El Dorado Park, - Departs at 7:45am Bottom of grass hill (AKA Ice Block Hill), Montilla & Papagayo Drive • Ave Deseo & Rojas Lane – Departs at 7:45am

Kindergarten Late Bird Parents, contact me if you would like to help out with a late bird walking school bus. If you have questions, please email Yolanda Roetcisoender at [email protected].
