LETTER TO THE EDITOR

What is your life worth?

I n the time it takes to read this message, yourlife’s work could become nothing more thananother nibble in the belly of the great ma-

chine, your “contribution” unnoticed and unwor-thy of even a burp.

If it takes you about half a minute to read this, bythe time you’re done, the federal government mayhave consumed every cent you ever earned, orwill earn, in your entire life. Not just the moneyyou paid in taxes — equal to perhaps 20 years of40-hour-a-week slavery — but ALL your money.

According to my 1998 form 1040, the FederalGovernment spent one-and-two-thirds TRILLIONdollars in 1997. That’s over four and a halfBILLION per day, or over 3 million per minute. We’re talking about 52 thousand dollars PERSECOND.

Let’s say someone works 50 years, from age 16to 66, at a $25,000 a year job. Their lifetimeearnings — before taxes — would be 1.25 million. The feds would gobble that up in a mere 23.7seconds.

If you make twice that, congratulations! Yourefforts still won’t feed the beast for a singleminute, after which it will have to turn to someone

else’s life’s work and burn through that.

Let’s be generous and say the average Americanmakes $40,000 a year. I’ll bet it’s less than that, especially when you factor in those who aren’tearning a traditional income for whatever reason. But the hunger of the monster is so great there’s noneed to exaggerate. It devours 2,278 such people’sincomes every day.

Imagine the fury if 2,278 people went up in smokedaily due to plane crashes! Or due to mass murderers, terrorism, or any of the other horrors which areregularly paraded in front of us. No one would standfor it! Why, even 2,000 Waco style incinerations perday would be hard to believe, even of ourincreasingly powerful government. Yet they keepshoveling thousands of lifetimes of earnings into thehungry maw every day, and we accept it, becausewe are accustomed to it.

Sorry, I’m afraid I’ve taken more than a half minuteof your time by now. Which is a pity, because you’vealready been devoured and forgotten. Time to moveon to another victim...

Greedy capitalists take your money by trading for some-thing you want. Kind, helpful liberals just take it.

Here's how you can help.1. donate money to fund additional

membership mailers2. donate time to phone people

whose membership is aboutto expire

3. sign up your spouse, parents, neighbors, co-workers, etc.

The National LP has two massivemailers in the works: (1) A 40,000

piece mailer that's going to ex-members.(2) The second one's going to 90,000registered Libertarians. Since almost halfof all registered Libertarians in the US arein California, we'll benefit from thosemailings.

Goal 2: I'm also pleased to report that ourmonthly pledge base has never been higher, although still shy of our goal of $6,000 permonth. So, we're doing another round oftele-marketing to raise funds, especiallymonthly pledges. I'm also pleased to reportthat in addition to accepting Visa andMastercard, we now also accept AmericanExpress and the Discover card. And for thegold bugs among us, our e-gold accountnumber is 107000.

Out of 6,532 dues-paying members, 220generous folks have become monthlypledgers contributing $4,753.26. These 220folks are the people who fund the dailyprogress of the LPC and our regionalorganizations. Your membership dues

cover the cost of the newsletter with littleleft over to fund our many worthwhileprojects. If, like me, you're impatient withthe speed of our progress, please considerbecoming a monthly pledger. It's thecheapest form of fund-raising we do. Thatmeans more funds for our continuedprogress.

And, if you want to help your local party, monthly credit card pledges will forwardedto your region each month if you wish orsplit with the LPC.

LPC has endorsed these external goalsfor 1999:

Goal 1: Prop 215, isn't just a good idea,it's the law! The www.215NOW.com website continues to get better and better. As acomputer professional, I use the web agreat deal in my work. I visit many fancyweb sites with tricky graphics and specialeffects. However, our 215NOW web sitestill stands out. It's simple, straight forward, and easy to use. If you haven't visited it ina month or so, check it out.

Goal 2: The repeal of Prop 10: the tax ontobacco users. The 675,000 signatures havebeen submitted and are being verified bythe Secretary of State’s office. Therequirement is 461,000 valid signatures.Libertarians Ned and John Roscoe, ownersof the Cigarettes Cheaper! stores sponsoredthis initiative.

Goal 2b: “None of the Above” initiativehas qualified for the March 2000 ballot andhas been endorsed by the LPC's ExecutiveCommittee. Associate LPC member AlanShurgart, former CEO of Seagate, financedthis initiative.

Goal 3: 200 candidates in the year 2000.Ted Brown, our candidate recruiterextraordinaire, has outdone himself onceagain. We have congressional candidatesfor 51 out of the 52 possible slots. The total,at press time, is 146 partisan and non-partisan candidates. Both are record highs.

Your participation and contributions fuelour successes.

We, as a Party, setthree main internalgoals for 1998:

1. Increase our dues-payingmembership to 7,000

2. Increase our monthlypledge base to $6,000per month

3. Maintaining ballotstatus (DONE!)

Goal 1: It's always nice to start off withgreat news. The LPC membership total atthe end of September is 6,532. That's a newrecord high.

BUT. You know there's going to be a “but.”According to analysis done by Joe Dehn, here are the numbers of memberships setto expire soon:

November 230December 411January 388Total 1,029

We're within 468 members of our goal of7,000. We are so close, and yet withoutyour help, 6,532 may be the high for theyear.

The National LP has managed to get about80% of our members to renew, althoughthe renewal rate from those who signed upvia Project Archimedes has been lower. So,the projected, best-case, scenario is thatwe'll need 597 new members by year-end.The worst-case projection is that we'll need788 members to reach our goal.

The principal suspect, RobertGootee, was hauled from his bed and ledaway in chains. His wife was not allowedto call anyone, nor were her neighborsallowed to come in to comfort her, for fourand a half hours. What was the offense thatprecipitated this action? Gootee wascharged with possession of an undersizedstriped bass, striped bass out of season, untagged striped bass, possession ofsummer flounder out of season, failure totag and check deer within 24 hours andpossession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle. The agents involved were from the stateand U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Andthe target for the raid was the Golden HillsHunt Club. Gootee, the club treasurer, washauled away with such “evidence” as deerand duck mounts and a framed photographof his retriever bringing in a duck.

Eventually, 24 other club members werecharged with related offenses, includingfailure to wear sufficient fluorescentorange while hunting. It’s not surprising, then, that after the raid in Maryland someAmerican flags in Dorchester County wereflying upside down.WorldNetDaily.com, September 8, 1999

LIBERTARIANS ARE EFFECTIVE CANDIDATES…Nine Libertarians are candidates in local campaigns!

LP CANDIDATES SOUGHT LOCAL OFFICE IN NOVEMBER 2, 1999 ELECTIONS

Nine California Libertarians ran foroffice this fall in local electionsfrom San Bernardino County to

Shasta County.

“Local candidates are critical to our long-term strategy for success. Local races arenon-partisan and more ‘winnable,’” JuanRos (LP state executive director) noted.“Local offices give Libertarians a chanceto not only implement Libertarian solutionsat the local level but also to gain valuableexperience that can serve as a stepping-stone to higher, partisan office.”

Leading the pack with four local candidateswas San Mateo County. Candidates in thatRegion were: Ray Bell, MargaretBuckley-Schmidt, Matt Grocott, andJack Hickey.

“Jack Hickey, who serves as CampaignCoordinator for the San Mateo County LP,deserves a lot of credit for recruiting thesecandidates, including himself!” Ros said.“San Mateo’s level of candidate activity isimpressive and should be emulated byother counties.”

Grocott sought a seat on the City Councilfor San Carlos, a city of roughly 28,000residents.

Further north in Shasta County, Al Swain— former chair of the LP of Shasta Countyand recipient of this year’s Karl BrayMemorial Award for Activism, handed outat the LPC’s 1999 convention in San Jose— ran to replace outgoing Libertarian John

Hufford on the Whitmore Union SchoolDistrict Board.

In Sacramento County, Sean Harbaughran for a seat on the Citrus Heights CityCouncil. About 88,000 residents live in thecity of Citrus Heights.

South in Riverside County, Larry Bairdran an aggressive campaign for a Board ofDirectors.

In Los Angeles County, Rita White —wife of LPC Region 67 Chair GeorgeWhite — campaigned to win a seat on theBonita Unified School District Board.

Finally, in San Bernardino County, JohnScott Ballard ran in the only partisan racethis fall: a special election to replace thelate Rep. George Brown in the 42ndCongressional District. Ballard faced notonly Democratic and Republicanopponents but also a Reform Partycandidate.

Ballard is already an appointed officeholder, serving on the San Bernardino Board ofPolice Commissioners, a position heacquired due to his ceaseless activism inthe community on behalf of lower taxesand less government. “John is anintelligent, articulate candidate. With allthe money thrown around in this race, Johnstood out as a candidate of change andprinciple — unlike his opponents whorepresented nothing more than biggovernment status quo,” Ros said.

If you are considering running for a local office in 2000…NOW is the time to seriously prepare. NOW is the time to start doing research in your localcommunity to find out which offices will be up for election next year and when the filingperiod begins.

For example, County Supervisor seats in all 58 counties will be voted on, as well as dozens ofcounty and city offices including City Council. Community College and School Boards arepopular offices for Libertarian candidates, but others may want to run for Water District,Transportation District, or even Mosquito Abatement District!

Executive Director Update:

Moving the Party Forward and Mobilizing Candidates!Juan Ros filled TV and radio airwaves last month while helping LPC candidates collect signatures as Campaign 2000’ssignature-gathering period kicked off.

JUAN ROS

“ I t’s been quite a month!” Ros stated. “Inaddition to our ongoing 215NOW! websiteand preparation for the upcoming LPC stateconvention, October 1 marked the officialstart of the 2000 campaign season. On topof that, I appeared on TV three times withintwo weeks!”

October 1 was the first day for candidatesto take out papers with which to collectsignatures in lieu of paying the candidatefiling fee. The LPC provides lists of

crimes should not lead to 25-year prison sentences. With thismeasure the LPC can ally itself with left-leaning groups who wemay not otherwise get a chance to work with,” Ros said.

At press time the initiative was still pending in the AttorneyGeneral’s office, awaiting Title and Summary, after whichsupporters will need to collect 419,260 valid signatures to qualifyfor the November, 2000 ballot.

Ros issued a news release announcing the LPC’s support for theinitiative, which resulted in an interview with Los Angeles radiostation KPFK on September 24. Also on the 24th, Ros appearedfor two full hours on Santa Cruz station KSCO with host DaveAlan discussing the party and its positions.

On September 28, Ros spoke to the recently-organized LP of theSan Gabriel Valley/East Los Angeles County (R67), detailing the

story of the LPC’s lobbying efforts againstSB 365, which was defeated last summer.Region 67 Chair George White and wife Ritaarranged to videotape Ros’s speech for airingon local cable access.

“I was very impressed with the region andthe energy and enthusiasm George and Rita demonstrated,” Rossaid. “They are really working hard to grow the region and I’mcertain they will be very successful!”

On October 2, Ros flew to Redding and attended a SecondAmendment Rally at Anderson River Park. (See photo on page 5).Shasta County LP Chair Dwight Bailey gave a brief speech beforeintroducing Ros, whose speech included frequent use of the word“Libertarian.” Ros then introduced LP candidate for U.S. SenateGail Lightfoot to complete the Libertarian triple play of speakersat the rally. In addition, the Shasta County and Siskiyou CountyLP regions manned an information booth and collected signaturesfor several candidates.

“That was a great event, and the Shasta and Siskiyou groupsdeserve a lot of credit,” Ros noted. “It was a friendly crowd, so Ifocused on the principled Libertarian position on guns. Iemphasized that Libertarians put the Second Amendment first, andthat resonated well with the audience.”

Ros was interviewed at the event by local TV station KRCR, theABC affiliate, and the nightly news reported the SecondAmendment Rally as the lead story that evening.

According to Ros, the recent explosion of Libertarian mediaactivity is not a surprise. “As I said last month, Libertarians aregoing to be all over the airwaves the next 12 months, so this is justthe beginning!”

registered voters to its candidates for signature-gathering, and thisyear the Internet served as an important tool.

“With the help of LPC Campaign Coordinator Ted Brown andLPC webmaster Joe Dehn, we were ableto provide our candidates with onlineaccess to registered Libertarian voterfiles, which greatly helps accelerate thedistribution of this information,” Rossaid. “For those candidates withoutInternet access, we printed out hard copylists and mailed them as quickly as possible so that candidateswouldn’t lose any time collecting signatures.”

State legislative candidates must turn in signatures by November10. Federal candidates have until November 25 to collectsignatures.

“At last check, we had 137 partisan candidates — including threecontested primaries! Plus nine more candidates have announcedfor local nonpartisan office, so we’re well on our way towardsmeeting our 200-candidate goal!” Ros announced.

But candidates aren’t the only part of Campaign 2000 the LPC isfocusing on. At its September 19 Executive Committee meeting, the LPC endorsed a proposed initiative to amend California’s“Three Strikes” law. The measure would limit the application ofthe three strikes sentencing enhancements to convictions for“serious” and “violent” felonies. Currently, non-violent crimessuch as drug crimes can be considered “strikes.”

On September 22, Ros joined proponents of the initiative —including Californians to Amend Three Strikes, Save Our Sons, and the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression— in a press conference held on the steps of the Los AngelesCriminal Courts Building. All major local news media, both TVand radio, attended the conference.

“Whatever your thoughts on the effectiveness of ‘Three Strikes,’I think Libertarians can agree that non-violent and victimless

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

LPC Monthly Online OptionWant to get the news from LPC Monthly sooner? Want to savetrees? You can now take advantage of two new services that letyou turn your hardcopy subscription into an online one. First,an e-mail notification service lets you know when a new issue isavailable online . Second, if you no longer want to receive thehardcopy version you can ask for it not to be mailed.

The articles from each issue are being made available onlineshortly after the hardcopy version goes to the printer. This meansthat — depending on where in the state you live — by readingthe articles online instead of waiting for the hardcopy you canget the news up to several weeks sooner.

Making your subscription an online one is simple. Just use theform that has been provided for this purpose on the LPC mem-ber services page at:

http://www.ca.lp.org/lpc-member-services.html

Simply fill in the information, including your e-mail address, and you’ll start receiving a notice of each issue by e-mail in-stead of the hardcopy.

You also have the option of getting the online notice but stillreceiving the hardcopy. Simply subscribe to the LPC’s announce-ment list by sending a message to

[email protected] “subscribe” in the subject line.

Renewing Your MembershipRenewal notices are sent to members whose expiration date iscoming up. Just return your dues payment in the accompanyingenvelope and your membership at the national, state, and locallevel will be renewed for one year. Please respond to renewalnotices promptly so we don’t need to send additional reminders— every additional notice costs money we could otherwise useto grow the party!

Address ChangesBe sure to let us know if you move! Send your address changenotice to the national office so that your newsletters and otherimportant correspondence can be sent to your new address. Ifyou are moving out of state but want to continue as an LPCmember or continue subscribing to LPC Monthly, please alsonotify the state office so we can make the necessary arrange-ments to keep you on our list.

Address LabelsThe address label on your copy of this newsletter provides im-portant information relating to your membership records. Onthe line above your name, you will find a six-digit number. Pleasemention this number in any correspondence relating to yourmembership.

On the same line you will also find a two-digit number identify-ing the LPC region with which you are affiliated. (If you are nota member but are receiving the newsletter for some other reasonthere may be a two-letter code instead.) See the listing on page11 to find out the name of your region and who to contact forinformation about local activities.
