Monozukuri• ‘Mono’ means ‘Things’ • ‘Zukuri’ means ‘Making’•Monozukuri “Process of making things”• It is very hard to explain, it’s a unique Japanese

manufacturing style.• The literal translation does not convey the real

connotation (meaning) of monozukuri.• The word has an more intense meaning.•Monozukuri is about having a state of mind, the

spirit to produce not only excellent products(process) but also have the ability to constantly improve the production system and its processes. • Professor Takahiro Fujimoto (Manufacturing

Management Research Center, University of Tokyo) has defined monozukuri as

“The duplication of design data into a material.” or

“art, science and craft of making things.” • The Japanese Institute for Trade and Organisation

(JETRO) describes Monozukuri as: “having the spirit of producing excellent products and the ability to constantly improve a production system and process.”

Monozukuri in Product development

•Monozukuri is extensively used in the product development:

For example in Automobiles sector, Toyoto Motors, Fujistu, Tata Motors in India (Nano car)

Nano car world chipset car uses Monozukari.

Monozukuri in Action!• Toyota Motors “Sustainability report 2013”

explains how they have been seeking harmony with people, society, and global environment with monozukuri manufacturing. They also reported that how they are working for sustainable development of the society through monozukuri manufacturing. •Nissan’s emerging market strategy and Japan’s

monozukuri report 2011 says that they have used Monozukuri ‘Power’ to execute the strategy. • Tata Motors in India used monozukuri principles

in India to manufacure the cheapest car (Nano) of the world.• Renault introduced monozukuri in 2010 and

reduced the direct manufacturing cost 4% a year. • In NEC production innovation is positioned as a

management innovation that features “MONOZUKURI strengthening” activities that cover all of NEC’s departments.

Monozukuri in Action!

•Hitachi contributing to MONOZUKURI through facilitating adoption of IT, more efficient process, and common platform in design and production of hardware products in Information & Telecommunication Systems Company.• Fujitsu adapted systematic approach to support

manufacturing customers named "Monozukuri Solutions" is based on the axes of product lifecycle management (PLM) and supply chain management (SCM), giving new structure to the ICT-supported manufacturing offerings and other manufacturing products and services of the Fujitsu Group.• Toshiba brochure headlines as ““Monozukuri”:

creating our products with pride and passion keeping our customers in mind all the time and everywhere”

………. and many more companies have been following the monozukuri philosophy.

Monozukuri in Process development

•Need is there to apply the Monozukuri philosophy for process; One interesting area could be education and research process. It may give new dimensions to the quality of education globally.• After this discussion we can prepare a draft

proposal for “Monozukuri in Education and Research”.

Page 9: Monozukuri in Education and Research

NEC is using monzukuri human resource development

Monozukuri: A commitment not a requirement

•Monozukuri philosophy in education and research can lead to a strong commitment by all the stakeholders: management, parents, faculty members, alumni, and students to achieve excellent education and skills for development and career growth.

Page 11: Monozukuri in Education and Research

Monozukuri: Innovation not development

•Monozukuri style asks for continuous improvements and innovations.• The philosophy asks to be proactive for getting

improved products and processes without being satisfied with the current status.• The user requirements must be incorporated

well in advance.• The innovation in teaching methodology,

teaching contents, and curricula with regular updates can lead to an excellent education and research scenario.

Page 12: Monozukuri in Education and Research

Monozukuri: Emphasis on co-existence not on competition

•Monozukuri culture asks for working towards co-existence not for cut-throat competition.• The educational institutes can work together to

achieve common goals. (At Microsoft Innovation Center at least five proximity institutes are required to work together on the latest technology)

Page 13: Monozukuri in Education and Research

Monozukuri: Put soul at work not body

• The monozukuri culture asks for pouring heart and soul into work, striving for perfection regardless of time or cost.• The students, faculty members and the

management of the academic institutes may agree together to work with religious feeling for achieving highest quality of education.

Page 14: Monozukuri in Education and Research

Monozukuri: Orientation for Quality not Profit

• The philosophy asks for making highest quality products and processes without concerning about the profit.• Any graduate must be skilled. •How graduate becomes useful for the society.•Monozukuri ensures skilled manpower rather

than degree holder.

Page 15: Monozukuri in Education and Research

Monozukuri: Desire for ‘Only One’ not for ‘Number One’

• Rather than wanting to be number one, the companies following monozukuri philosophy have extremely strong desire to be the 'only one.‘• The students and faculties must compete for

uniqueness. • Performance comparison with peers should be

avoided and they should focus toward refinement of the uniqueness.

Page 16: Monozukuri in Education and Research

Monozukuri: Is artistic not scientific

• It needs a spirit to make good products and the ability to continually improve production systems and processes.• Also it requires skill, spirit, passion, and pride.

In that respect, Monozukuri artistic rather than a pure science.• The whole education system whether it is

technology education or scientific education must lean towards art involving passion and spirit of all stakeholders.

Monozukuri based process model for education success

Basic components of Monozukuri Education success model•Home- covers parents and culture of the student• Student- behavior, learning attitude, and

determination.• School/Institute- provides the infrastructure,

environment, resources•Monozukuri philosophy emphasizes on

component overlapping not isolation.

Page 19: Monozukuri in Education and Research

Monozukuri based process model for education success

Learning components of Monozukuri Education success model

• Assessment- covers interest, academic skills, thought process, deviation of the student. Parents Economic feasibility assessment, and motivation that can be provided by the parent to their wards.• Communication- The outcome of assessment is

shared among all the stakeholders.• Action Plan- Based on the feedback received, an

action plan can be prepared for further improvement and innovation in education process.• Tutoring- This step executes the steps in the

action plan by proper delivery of contents• Community- The overall learning is applied to the

society.

The whole model is iterative as the monozukuri style asks for relentless improvement and innovation without being satisfied with the current status.

“4W-H” Factors of Monozukuri teaching process

•Why am I teaching? : Concepts•Who am I instructing? : Learners•What am I teaching? : Content•Where it is used? : Context•How am I teaching? Instructional Approaches

The monozukuri style requires intense answers to these questions.

Cycle of Nature and Education

“Cycle of Nature” “Cycle of Education”All the people and communities are subject to the natural cycle of the earth.
