The Monmouth University field hockey team takes part in the 2009 Northeast Conference Championships this week at the Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, N.J., the host site of top seed, Rider. The Hawks, who are the fourth seed in the tournament, will take on number one seed Rider in the first game of the tournament on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Rider won the right to host the event after finishing with the best record during the NEC regular season. MU dropped its only regular season matchup against the Broncs, falling 3-1 at home on October 9th. The Blue and White punched their ticket to the tourna-ment on the last game of the season, defeating Siena at home, 5-1, to earn the last remaining seed. MU has gone 0-3 against the other teams in this season’s conference championship, falling 3-1 to Rider, 5-1 to Lock Haven, and 2-1 in overtime against Quinnipiac.

TICKET TO THE NEC DANCEThe Monmouth University field hockey team is back in the Northeast Conference Championships after a four-year hiatus. The Hawks last made an appearance in the conference postseason in 2004, earning the fourth seed that season. The Blue and White had fallen short of the tournament by one game each of the past three seasons. MU owns a 0-5 all-time record in NEC tournament games, having participated in five over the program’s thirteen year history. The Hawks are also a combined 0-3 this season against Championship opponents.

BUCKING THE BRONCSEntering this weekend’s matchup, Rider hold the all-time series record against MU, 15-5. In the season’s lone matchup, the Hawks dropped a 3-1 game at home to the Broncs with sophomore Ashley McPeek tallying the Blue and White’s lone goal. The last time Monmouth defeated Rider was a 3-2 home win on September 18th, 2002. MU is 0-2 all time against Rider in Northeast Confer-ence Championship play with the last loss coming to the Broncs in 2001. As fate would have it, the first time these two team met in post-season play was in 2000 when the number four seeded Broncs defeated the top seeded Hawks, 1-0 in semifinal action.

LADY IN RED(SHIRT) Red-shirt senior Enza Mazza has made her last season in West Long Branch an unforgettable one, re-writing the MU all-time records along the way. While leading the Hawks all season long in goals, assists, and points, the Oceanport, N.J. native currently sits third all-time in goals (17), second in assists (11), and third in points (45). She has also set the single season record for assists (7), is third in goals (11) and is third in points (29). A 2008 All-NEC Second-Team honoree, Mazza has been one of the most explosive and well-balanced scorers in program history.

DOUBLE OR NOTHINGAfter finishing the 2008 season 3-15 overall, the Hawks have more than doubled their win total from last year as they finished 2009 with an 8-11 record. Mon-mouth has also doubled their conference win total from last season (from two to four wins). The Blue and White have also put together a string of win streaks this season, opening up the season 3-0 and producing a three game win streak at the beginning of conference play as well.

SCORING SPREEThe MU team has produced an outburst of offensive efforts throughout the 2009 season. After finishing the 2008 season with 24 team goals, nine assists and 57 total points, the 2009 Hawk crew has posted 31 goals, 22 assists and 84 points. Monmouth, currently ranked third in the NEC in goals, have taken a leap up in scoring this season as they have produced 1.69 goals per game this year compared to 1.29 gpg last year.

NEw SHERIff IN TOwNFreshman Michelle Pieczynski has enjoyed one of the most productive seasons by a newcomer in MU history. The Doylestown, Pa. native has quietly made her mark on both the team and Northeast Conference. She currently ranks second on the team in goals (8) and points (18) while tallying a team-high three game-winning goals - good enough for fourth best in the NEC. Pieczynski also ranks in the top-ten of several catagories in the NEC including goals, points, and game-winners. After only one season at MU, she has currently sits in sixth for goals in a season and seventh in points in a season. The newcomer has also earned NEC distinction twice this season, as the conference named Pieczynski rookie of the week twice in 2009.

ANCHORS AwAY!The Hawks have produced another strong defensive showing this season thanks in heavy part to the Hawks duo of defensive anchors, Sarah Keppel and Nora Bos-mans. Keppel, an All-NEC Second-Team honoree last season, has once again been strong on the defensive end tallying one of the Hawks seven defensive saves on the season. Ranking second in the conference, and top 20 in the country, Bosmans has produced four defensive saves on the season, helping the Hawks to a third place ranking in the NEC in that category.

HEAD Of THE CLASSBeyond the playing field, the Monmouth program has taken great pride in producing one of the highest team GPA’s in the country, and several of the highest ranked student-athletes. Last season the Hawks produced 15 team members on the NFHCA National Academic Squad, while seeing former Hawk, Molly Passarella, earn ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-American Second Team honors. MU also earned the distinction of being the top academic performers in the NEC.

KATZ IN THE CRADLEJunior goalie Melissa Katz has been tough between the pipes all season long for the Blue and White. The Tinton Falls, N.J. native has produced a career season for the Hawks notching 133 saves on the season and posting a 3.34 goals against average. She has also set a career-high in shutouts with two, bringing her career total to four. Katz currently ranks fourth in the NEC in saves per game and is sixth in goals against average.

THE fIGHTIN’ fIGLIOSHead Coach Carli Figlio is looking for her first tournament win as she enters the NEC Championships for the first time in her young tenure at MU.
