Monitoring adaptation progress • On behalf of the German Government, GIZ supports partner

countries in the NAP process, INDC implementation and monitoring of adaptation progress

• > 20 countries developed/are developing progress monitoring systems for adaptation

• So far they are mainly related to national CC strategies

• NAP process and Paris Agreement provide additional momentum

• Countries differ widely on how they approach and monitor their adaptation INDC committments

How to monitor adaptation at national level National adaptation M&E systems differ greatly between countries

• Policy context • Purpose • Instituional arrangements • M&E approach • Reporting • Resources needed

There is no one size fits all approach! M&E is more than just indicators!

Key considerations for M&E 1. What is the purpose of adaptation M&E?

• E.g. to support ongoing management, to learn, or to provide accountability

2. Who should be using the information generated by M&E? • How will the information be disseminated?

3. What reporting format is adequate? • Link to decision making at national level, provision of

information for international community

These considerations determine which M&E system is appropriate.

There is no one-size fits all approach to M&E!
