Monitoring adaptation progress • On behalf of the German Government, GIZ supports partner
countries in the NAP process, INDC implementation and monitoring of adaptation progress
• > 20 countries developed/are developing progress monitoring systems for adaptation
• So far they are mainly related to national CC strategies
• NAP process and Paris Agreement provide additional momentum
• Countries differ widely on how they approach and monitor their adaptation INDC committments

Key considerations for M&E 1. What is the purpose of adaptation M&E?
• E.g. to support ongoing management, to learn, or to provide accountability
2. Who should be using the information generated by M&E? • How will the information be disseminated?
3. What reporting format is adequate? • Link to decision making at national level, provision of
information for international community
These considerations determine which M&E system is appropriate.
There is no one-size fits all approach to M&E!
